Pomegranates are delicious and versatile, but a huge pain to get the seeds from. Here is how DealDash deseeds pomegranates.

If you’re a faithful DealDash Reviewed reader, then you might remember the pomegranate salsa recipe from last week. If you missed it, you can check it out at this link right here. However, as delicious as pomegranates are, they are very difficult and time-consuming to deseed. Luckily, there are two simple ways that you can get those yummy pomegranate seeds out from the fruit. Read on for more details.

Method One – Tapping

The first method is a little bit messier than the second, but they are both viable ways to get those seeds out of the pomegranate. The first thing that you want to do is take the pomegranate and gently but firmly roll it around on a hard surface like your table or kitchen countertop. This helps separate the seeds from the membrane.

Next, cut all the way around the stem, taking special care to only cut through the skin of the pomegranate and not the seeds. This can be a little difficult to do your first few times, but you’ll get the hang of it. After you cut all the way around then pull the top off.

Finally, make slices through the skin every few inches around the opening that you cut. Turn the pomegranate upside-down over a bowl, and whack with a wooden spoon. The little seeds will just pop right down into the bowl with very little mess.

Method 2 – Underwater

The second method that we are going to explore today is practically mess-free and very simple as well. You will start out the same way as above, cutting around the stem and pulling off the top.

Next, make four cuts around the perimeter of the fruit.

Finally, stick the pomegranate underwater in a large bowl. Pull the pomegranate apart in four sections.

After you’ve pulled the fruit apart the little seeds should start coming out with just a little poking with your fingers. All of the mess stays in the bowl. Easy!

Pomegranate seeds are perfect for sprinkling on salads or using in recipes. Once you have the basics down of how to get the seeds out with ease, then you can incorporate pomegranates into more of your meals.

DealDash Selects the Right Cutting Board

There are many different types and styles of cutting boards. DealDash is here to make sure that you get the right one for the job.

Why do we need cutting boards? Mainly, it’s to make sure that you aren’t damaging your expensive kitchen counters by cutting directly on them. Also, it’s smart to not mix your raw meat and fruits and veggies on the same cutting surface, so it makes sense to have cutting boards for each type of food. Protect Your Counter

 

Even if you have granite or marble countertops it’s not wise to use your knives to cut food on them. Granite and marble countertops may be strong, but they can still be scratched or get chips in them if you abuse them by not using a cutting board. If you have laminate countertops, forget about ever using them as a cutting surface, they are really not meant to have anything at all cut on them. By using a cutting board you can save your precious and expensive counter tops.

Trust me, countertops are expensive, you don’t want to have to replace them. Not only because of the expense, but it is also very inconvenient to have to move everything out of your kitchen so that the counter company can come in and replace them.

Try a Bamboo Cutting Board

Bamboo cutting boards are amazing. I use them for all of my fruits, vegetables, and non-meat items such as when I cut up pizza for the kids. There are a few downfalls to a bamboo cutting board, however, such as they are not meant to be put in the dishwasher. Since I have a family of five, I really don’t have a lot of time to be hand-washing dishes, almost everything goes into the dishwasher. However, I take good care of my bamboo cutting boards and bambo spoons by handwashing them.

If you happen to put your bamboo cutting board into the dishwasher it won’t immediately disintegrate or explode, of course, but it will shorten the life of your cutting board. Regularly putting it in the dishwasher will ruin it with cracks and splits that the bacteria from the food will collect in, and you will need to throw it out. If you accidentally put it in the dishwasher now and again (looking at you, husband!) it’s not really a big deal.

You Can Always Use Plastic

Plastic cutting boards are fine, as well. Personally, I use plastic cutting boards for raw meat and bamboo cutting boards for everything else. The reason that I use plastic cutting boards for raw meat is that the plastic ones can easily go in the dishwasher. I don’t use plastic for all of my cutting needs because I just think that the bamboo ones look nicer. The plastic ones are very versatile, however, you can even get ones that are flexible so you can pick them up and pour whatever you have been chopping into a pot. Both bamboo and plastic cutting boards are fine to use, just follow your own personal preference.

If you’re a pasta lover and would like to try to eat a lower carb diet, why not try spaghetti squash? It’s nutritious, delicious and fun to make. What IS spaghetti squash?

Spaghetti squash is, like it sounds, a member of the squash family.  When you cook this squash its flesh falls away from its fruit in strands that look a lot like spaghetti, hence the name, spaghetti squash. It’s said that we “eat with our eyes” first, so since this squash looks like spaghetti it’s easier for your brain to try and compare it to actual pasta.

Spaghetti squash can be prepared in many different ways that include boiling, baking, and roasting. You can treat it just like regular spaghetti and put red sauce and parmesan cheese on top, or you can serve it simply with salt and pepper or butter or melted cheese.

Spaghetti squash is quite versatile, and that’s what makes it a favorite among many people. Please keep in mind, though, if you are trying to eat a low carb or keto diet to watch what you put on top of the spaghetti squash. Many pasta sauces have added sugar and lots of carbs. If you’d like a sauce you can make your own quite easily with a can of crushed tomatoes, onions, and some seasonings.

Baked Spaghetti Squash

Making spaghetti squash is easy, and one of the most popular ways to prepare it is to bake it. Here is a simple recipe for delicious baked spaghetti squash for your family to enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • Spaghetti squash, cut in half
  • 1 Jar pasta sauce (or 3 Cups homemade sauce)
  • 1 Tbs Italian seasoning
  • 4 Ounces Mozzarella cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
  2. Place both halves of spaghetti squash on a baking sheet, flesh side down
  3. Add 1/4 inch water to the baking sheet
  4. Bake squash for 40 minutes (or until tender) remove the squash from the oven
  5. Using a fork as a tiny rake, rake the squash’s flesh from the skin into strands
  6. Put all of the strands back into the squash flesh
  7. Add the sauce to the top of the squash strands, then the cheese and seasonings
  8. Put the squash back into the oven for another 3-5 minutes, til the cheese bubbles
  9. Enjoy!

Eggs Benedict was originally made in New York but is enjoyed by people all over the world. Eggs Benedict is a traditional American brunch or breakfast food. Brunch is great every day but is typically served on Sundays. Eggs Benedict consists of two halves of an English muffin, and each half is covered with a choice of Canadian bacon or ham, a poached egg, and hollandaise sauce. The hollandaise sauce is really the thing that will set your Eggs Benedict apart from the rest. Read on for an Eggs Benedict recipe, from DealDash.

Hollandaise Sauce

Here are the ingredients for the hollandaise sauce:

  • 4 Egg yoks
  • 1 TBS lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 Stick of butter, cut into tiny cubes
  • Salt, to taste
  • Cayenne pepper, to taste

Here are the directions for the hollandaise sauce:

  1. Melt the butter in a pan, then set aside
  2. If you have a double boiler, used that. Otherwise, fill a pan about a ⅓ full of water and heat until you see a couple thin streams of bubbles. Place a heat-safe metal or glass bowl snugly on top of the pan, without touching the water.
  3. Add your egg yolks and lemon juice to the double boiler. Whisk constantly and vigorously until the mixture becomes frothy and lighter in color. This can take more time than you expect, up to 10 minutes.
  4. Add your melted butter slowly by pouring the butter in a small, steady stream, whisking constantly and vigorously. The sauce should thicken easily at first, then become more difficult to combine. Pour more slowly as this happens, since too much butter can cause the sauce to split. This will take a few minutes.
  5. Add your salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Cover your bowl and keep warm while you are preparing the rest of the ingredients.

Eggs Benedict

Here are the ingredients for the rest of the meal:

  • Canadian bacon or ham
  • English Muffins
  • Eggs

Here are the directions for the rest of the meal:

  1. Heat the Canadian bacon  (or ham) in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook for a few minutes until it starts to brown, turning occasionally. Keep warm.
  2. Cut each English muffin in half and place them on a baking sheet, cut sides up. Butter the cut sides lightly and toast under the broiler until light brown.
  3. Time for the egg!  Fill a wide nonstick skillet or shallow pan half full of water. Heat until there are a couple thin streams of bubbles.
  4. Crack one egg into a small bowl, taking care not to break the yolk. Gently lower the edge of the bowl into the water, letting some water flow into the bowl. Tip the bowl to slide the egg slide into the water. Quickly repeat with however many eggs you would like to cook.
  5. Cook for 3½ minutes until the egg white is set but the yolk remains soft. Remove with a slotted spoon, allowing the water to drain off of the egg.
  6. Time to put it all together! Place your muffin halves on each plate. Lay a slice of the Canadian bacon on top of each muffin half, followed by a poached egg. Spoon Hollandaise sauce generously over the eggs.
  7. Enjoy your brunch!!

DealDash Makes: Latte Art

Latte art is a fun, creative, and inexpensive hobby. Read on for tips and tricks from DealDash to get started.

For starters, if you aren’t familiar with latte art, it refers to patterns made in the foam that tops espresso drinks. It can be just about anything that you wish, from the simple such as the heart design up above, to extremely intricate, such as the series of cats pictured below.

Aren’t those latte art pictures of cats amazing?! Those were most likely done with a combination of pouring skills and stencils. There is truly no right or wrong way to make latte art, as long as you are having fun and are happy with the art that you produce.

How Do I Do It?

First, you will need a latte coffee drink in a cup and some steamed milk. The best way to get steamed milk is with the milk frother on your coffee maker, but you can also make steamed milk by putting milk in the microwave for a few minutes, then putting a top on your container and shaking it. You can also get frothy milk by heating milk in a pot on the stove and whisking it.

Pour your espresso into the bottom of the cup and then add a small amount of your steamed milk and swirl to incorporate it. Pour slowly and evenly at a fairly high distance. As you reach the second half of the cup, bring the pitcher closer to the surface. This layer will not incorporate, creating a distinction between the white foam and the body of the latte.

Basic Designs

Heart:

  • Starting off with the milk container close to the top of the cup, pour a little bit of milk in.
  • Lifting the pitcher an inch or so up, pour one-half of a circle, making sure to move the milk pitcher, not the mug.
  • Hold the stream of milk in the same place, but wiggle the milk pitcher back and forth as you make a ringed circle.
  • When your milk is almost completely poured, swing the milk up to create the bottom tip of your heart.

Flower:

  • Pour the milk about an inch away from the bottom.
  • Once the cup is about half filled, gently shake the milk container back and forth while slowly moving backward. The flower design will move forward, filling the cup.

Have you ever participated in Meatless Monday? Many families who aren’t vegetarian like to participate in this trend for many reasons such as to be healthier and to save money. However, cooking vegetarian isn’t just making a salad. There are lots of different things that you can do to make your meatless meals more tasty and appetizing for your family.

Start Slow

You don’t want to scare your family off with anything too “out of the ordinary” at first. You might already be making some wonderful vegetarian meals without even thinking about it. Many pasta dishes can be just as delicious without the meat, such as lasagna or pasta roll-ups with ricotta cheese and noodles – delicious!

There are other ways to go meatless without completely giving up the taste and feel of meat. There are many meat-replacement products available at the store. These include substitutes for beef, chicken, and shellfish.

Go With the Seasons

I will be the first to admit that I really hate canned and frozen vegetables. They just taste old and stale to me. However, buying lots of fresh fruits and vegetables can be very expensive if you buy them out of season. Shopping and eating seasonally will be easier on your budget as well as taste delicious. If you are trying to save money, you won’t really be saving any if you end up throwing a lot of the food away simply because it doesn’t taste good, or your family doesn’t like it. My husband is a real stickler for not throwing food away, so I try to always buy the freshest and best-looking produce that I can find to minimize waste.

Get the Whole Family Involved

Cooking vegetarian meals without getting your family on board first can be difficult if they are used to eating a lot of meat. If you can recruit the rest of the family to assist you in choosing the meals, shopping at the supermarket, and helping prepare and cook the food they will be more likely to eat it. Remember, you won’t really be doing their health or your wallet any favors if they don’t want to eat the meals that you have prepared, even if they are vegetarian. Remember, start this gradually, and before you know it your family might occasionally request a few of their favorite vegetarian meals that you have introduced them to.

I won’t lecture you, I promise. In this case, nutritionists that study the health of smokers recommend that they eat healthy food that can help reduce the negative effects of your habit. Even more than that, specialists also say that certain foods can help smokers to quit smoking.

Antioxidants Neutralize Free Radicals

In the body of a smoker a phenomenon named “oxidative stress,” happens. This action appears when the production of molecules, named free radicals, exceeds the capacity of body’s production against oxidation. To increase the health state of the body, smokers need antioxidants. This is a nutritive substance that can be found in foods that should be consumed daily. In the category of antioxidants, some foods play a significant role in the prevention of chronic diseases like cancer, heart issues, and brain issues.

In order to reduce the negative effects of free radicals in their body, smokers need to up their antioxidant food intake. Nutritionists from many countries say that food that has antioxidant proprieties increase the immunity of a smoker. These foods can also help melt the fat from the arteries and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Eat Your Veggies

Smokers especially need to eat vegetables that are rich in fiber. In order to reduce the unhealthy effects of the tobacco in the body, smokers should also consume vegetables frequently like broccoli, beans, cucumber, etc. These vegetables have a lot of fiber and minerals. They also include a rich source of Vitamin B. Smokers should also reduce or even eliminate onion and garlic because they have a rich deposit of sulfur, a real enemy to free radicals.

Fish and vegetable oils also have antioxidant proprieties. You should not exclude ocean fish from your diet if you are a smoker. They have a rich deposit of Omega 3 and Omega 6, known to have antioxidant effects.

What Foods Can Reduce Smoking?

Yes, if you can believe it, there is a food that can help a smoker avoid smoking. Cinnamon sticks, when consumed daily, can give a smoker the power to throw away his pack of cigarettes and to smoke less. The same effects can be found in cinnamon mints. Also, crunchy food such as carrots and apples tend to make a smoker mindlessly snack on them, and they forget about smoking as much. The same can also be said of chewing gum.

One of the healthiest veggies around is asparagus. Asparagus is made up of about 93% water. Asparagus is low in calories and is very low in sodium. Want an excellent source of vitamins and minerals? Try asparagus! Here are just a few that asparagus includes:

  • vitamin B6
  • calcium
  • magnesium
  • zinc
  • fiber
  • protein
  • vitamin C, E, & K
  • thiamin
  • riboflavin
  • beta-carotene

In short, asparagus is extremely healthy and quite delicious when prepared correctly. Here are a few ways that your family will love that put asparagus in the spotlight.

Roasted Asparagus

Ingredients:

  • Asparagus
  • Olive oil
  • Salt & pepper

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Break off the tough ends of the asparagus and, if they’re thick, peel them.
  • Place the asparagus on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, then toss to coat the asparagus completely.
  • Spread the asparagus in a single layer and sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper.
  • Roast the asparagus for 25 minutes, until tender but still crisp.

Sauteed Asparagus

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Rinse the asparagus, peel the stalks and then remove the tough white ends at the base.
  • Saute the asparagus in oil and butter until tender (along with the sage leaves).
  • Discard the sage leaves after cooking.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

Asparagus Bacon Bundles

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Divide the asparagus spears into 12 bundles.
  • Carefully wrap 1 piece of bacon around each bundle, starting about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the tips.
  • Secure the bacon-wrapped spears with a toothpick. Lay the bundles in a low-sided casserole dish.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, butter, soy sauce, garlic salt and pepper.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Pour the hot sugar mixture over the asparagus bundles.
  • Transfer the dish to the oven and roast until the spears have begun to wilt and the bacon looks fully cooked, approximately 25 minutes.
  • Remove the toothpicks before serving.

Easter is tomorrow, have you got everything set up for the kids or grandkids? If you need a little help, here are some tips from DealDash.

What does your family like to do on Easter? Do you have any fun family traditions? Easter started as a religious holiday, of course, but there are many people who don’t practice religion who enjoy the fun secular aspects of the holiday. Here are the best things to do on Easter when you have kids or grandkids.

Easter Egg Hunt

In a previous DealDash article, we talked about coloring Easter eggs. If you followed my suggestions, you should have lots of eggs to hide for your Easter egg hunt. If you didn’t dye your eggs, you will need to run out today and pick up some of the plastic eggs and put candies and little surprises in them to hide for the kids.

After hiding your eggs, be sure to jot down where you hid all of the Easter eggs in case they are not all found by the egg hunters. This is especially important if you’re hiding real eggs, as these will eventually go bad and start to smell really terrible.

Baskets of Easter Fun

Having small kids means making Easter baskets! You can get baskets that are pre-filled with small toys and candy from the big box store or even the supermarket. Personally, though, I prefer to buy an empty basket and fill it up myself. This way I know that my children will like everything that’s in the basket, and I can keep the candy to toy ratio in check. I would much rather they have a few small toys, stuffies, or games than too much extra candy. Also, my kids go crazy for those tiny clementine oranges, so those are a great healthy treat to put in their baskets that they love.

Family Brunch

What child doesn’t enjoy seeing their cousins and grandparents? Be sure to invite the relatives over for the egg hunt, and ask them to stay for an Easter brunch as well. Easter brunch is typically ham or turkey and can include many side dishes such as glazed carrots, fruit salad, and pastries.

As you’re enjoying the brunch with your family, try to include the children in some of the festivities. Children love to feel helpful, let them set the table, fill the water glasses, or take the guests jackets and put them away.

Before, during, and after the brunch, be sure to take lots of photos of the happenings. You never know how many more Easters you will get with great-grandma, so it’s always wise to preserve these wonderful family gatherings.

DealDash Recipe: Unicorn Fudge!

Easter is coming. Whip up a batch of unicorn fudge to please everyone with a sweet tooth.

Have you ever tried unicorn fudge? It’s delicious, adorable, and fun to eat. It’s easier to make than traditional fudge, and it comes out so much prettier. You can adjust the recipe to make different colors and add different toppings. Grab your kids or grandkids and start a batch of unicorn fudge. Here is the recipe from DealDash.

Ingredients:

  • white sugar 3 Cups
  • 34 cup  unsalted butter
  • 34 cup half-and-half
  • 12 ounces (1 bag) white chocolate chips
  • 8 ounces marshmallow crème
  • Multi-pack of food coloring
  • Fun sprinkle sof your choice

Directions:

  • Grease and spread foil over an 8×8 glass dish.
  • Heat up the sugar, butter, and half-and-half in a saucepan. Turn the heat to medium and bring the delicious mixture to a boil. Stir very well with a wooden spoon for about 4 minutes.
  • Stir in the marshmallow crème and chocolate chips. Remove the mixture from the heat. Fold in the marshmallow crème and chocolate chips, stirring well with the wooden spoon until fully melted and has a smooth texture.
  • Separate the fudge mixture into however many bowls as you would like different color layers. If you just want 1 color then 1 bowl is fine. However, if you want 4 different colors separate into 4 different bowls, and so on.
  • Add a few drops of each food coloring to each bowl. Stir well until the colors are well mixed.
  • Layer each color into the 8×8 glass dish. Smooth out each layer with a rubber spatula.
  • Use a chopstick to swirl the colors around gently if you choose. You may skip this step if you would like the colors more defined.
  • Sprinkle the fun sprinkles over the fudge.
  • Place the fudge in the refrigerator to harden up. Allow it to chill for at least 6-12 hours until the fudge has completely hardened.
  • Slice the unicorn fudge into pieces. You may add more sprinkles if you so desire.

That’s because most of the time, the stove is the dirtiest, oiliest, and most stained with different sauces appliance in your kitchen. Put them in warm water to soak with some detergent so that they will be easier to clean.

The natural oil helps to drain every drop of water and prevents future mold accumulation. This maintains the clean sink  for an extended period of time.

Microfiber, Your Best Friend

If you are using paper towels to clean, you are making one of your biggest cleaning mistakes. Use microfiber towels. After one use they can be cleaned in the washing machine and reutilized. You will have significant savings on your kitchen supplies.

Sponges

It is well known that kitchen sponges and scrub brushes are the perfect terrain for the development of bacteria. This is why it’s a good idea that every night, after the last use, you squeeze it hard enough to remove most of the water and put it in the microwave for a minute or two. The remaining water will steam out, and the germs will be killed with the heat.

  4. Add your chicken chunks to the top

Don’t be afraid to experiment in the kitchen. The worst that can happen is one ruined dinner. Here are some ideas from DealDash.

If you’ve never had cheesecake pops, you’re in for a treat! These are extra yummy, and you will consume far less calories (if you can eat just one or two!) than if you had a regular-sized slice of cheesecake.

These sweet and creamy cheesecake pops make wonderful light desserts for a party or event, to take as a hostess gift, as a teacher present, or great for a kid’s birthday party.

They are as versatile as they are delicious, you can dip them in an array of toppings such as melted chocolate, caramel, rainbow sprinkles, or just about anything else you can think of! Please enjoy this recipe from DealDash.

Cheesecake Pops

  • 3 (8 ounces) packages cream cheese, softened
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ⅓ cup sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 Large eggs
  • 10 ounces white chocolate

Directions

  1. Grease and flour a 9-inch cake pan.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F
  3. In a large bowl, mix the sugar and softened cream cheese until smooth.
  4. Add the sour cream, flour, vanilla, and salt.
  5. Mix until well-combined.
  6. Add the eggs and mix again.
  7. Pour and scrape the cream cheese batter into the greased cake pan.
  8. Bake the cake for 45-50 minutes, until golden brown on the top.
  9. Cool for approximately 5-10 minutes.
  10. Chill the cake in the fridge for 3-plus hours.
  11. Scoop out the cheesecake into 1-1.5 inch round balls using a small ice cream scoop or melon baller.
  12. Place the cheesecake balls on a tray covered with waxed paper.
  13. Place a lollipop stick into the middle of each cheesecake ball.
  14. Freeze the cheesecake balls in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes.
  15. Melt the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Stir every 15 seconds with a spoon. Microwave until the white chocolate melts and is smooth.
  16. Dip the cheesecake balls into the melted chocolate. Twirl the cheesecake pop around to remove any dripping chocolate.
  17. Chill the cheesecake pops into the fridge until the chocolate hardens.

DealDash Recipe – Mushroom Risotto

DealDash Mushroom Risotto

Mushroom risotto is not only delicious but very versatile as well. Here is a yummy recipe from DealDash.

Risotto is a delicious Italian rice dish that is easily customized to your taste once you get the optimal technique down. This isn’t your garden variety white rice which cooks without any babysitting needed in a rice cooker. Risotto needs to be stirred and watched the entire time it is on the stove. The result is worth it, though. Mushroom risotto is a rich, creamy, and textured rice that can be served as an appetizer, main course, or side dish. Here is a recipe from DealDash for you to enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups arborio rice.
  • 1 lb sliced portobello and/or crimini mushrooms
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 6-8 cups of chicken, vegetable, or beef broth
  • 1/2-1 cup dry white wine, like a Sauvignon Blanc
  • Salt & Pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Heat 3 tablespoons olive oil in your largest skillet on medium heat.
  2. Dice 1 small onion and 2 cloves of garlic and add to the oil.
  3. Remove stems, and thinly slice your mushrooms while the onions & garlic cook.
  4. Add the mushrooms to the skillet after 3-4 minutes
  5. Add salt and pepper and stir to coat the mushrooms in oil.
  6. Using a sauce pot, heat up 6 cups of broth while the mushrooms are cooking. Do not heat all the way to boiling.
  7. Cook the mushrooms for 3-5 minutes
  8. Add 1 tablespoon of butter
  9. Add the 2 cups of arborio rice and constantly stir. Once the butter has melted, add the rice and stir so that it is coated with the oil and butter. Cook for 1 minute before adding any liquid.
  10. Add 1/2 cup of white wine. Add the white wine and stir into the rice. Cook together until almost all of the wine is evaporated or absorbed into the rice.
  11. Add one ladle of hot broth. Once the wine is absorbed, use a ladle to add the first cup of broth to the rice mixture
  12. Constantly stir the broth and rice. You cannot stir risotto enough.
  13. Add another cup of broth once the first has been absorbed. Once most of the broth has been absorbed by the rice, add another cup.
  14. Repeat until the broth is gone or the rice is your desired consistency. The rice should be slightly firm and creamy, but never mushy.

This baked cheesy macaroni is super-simple to make, and people love homemade macaroni and cheese. It is light years ahead of the boxed versions, and almost as inexpensive to make.

This baked cheesy macaroni has a powerful advantage for you: it is made with dry pasta, so there’s no need for precooking. Here’s a tip: the pasta cooks in the oven, absorbing the liquid from the dairy products. That’s a time-saver right there! Read on, and prepare for a delicious baked cheesy macaroni side dish for dinner tonight, compliments of DealDash.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup cottage cheese (not low fat, sorry healthy food lovers)
  • 2.5 cups milk (not skim, again, apologies)
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of grated nutmeg 
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 pound sharp or extra-sharp cheddar cheese, grated (Preferably use white cheddar, but orange will do.)
  • ½ pound elbow pasta, uncooked (see, this is the time-saver right here, folks)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees and position an oven rack in upper third of oven.
  2. Use 1 tablespoon butter to butter a 9-inch round or square baking pan.
  3. In a blender, purée cottage cheese, milk, mustard, cayenne, nutmeg and pepper together.
  4. Reserve ¼ cup grated cheese for topping. In a large bowl, combine remaining grated cheese, milk mixture and uncooked pasta. Pour into prepared pan, cover tightly with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  5. Uncover pan, stir gently, sprinkle with reserved cheese and dot with remaining tablespoon butter. Bake, uncovered, an additional 30 minutes, until browned.
  6. Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

This is such a delicious side dish, and it pairs well with just about any meat that you can imagine. I am planning on making this tonight with crispy baked chicken and garlic green beans on the side. Yummy, as well as kid-friendly, the perfect combination.

White Bread Ingredients:

Makes 2 loaves

  • 2 teaspoons active-dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup milk – 2%, or skim is best for counting your calories
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 5 1/2 – 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

You also need a stand mixer, a large mixing bowl

Directions:

  • Pour the water into the bowl of a standing mixer or large mixing bowl and sprinkle the yeast over top. Let this stand for 5 minutes until the yeast is dissolved.
  • Melt the butter in the microwave, slowly stir in the milk, sugar, and salt.
  • Pour 1 cup of flour and the milk mixture over the yeast.
  • Stir with the stand mixer until this comes together in a texture similar to brownie batter
  • Add another 4 1/2 cups of flour, reserving the remaining cup if the dough is sticky during kneading.
  • Stir until a floury dough is formed.
  • Swap out the mixing attachment for the dough hook attachment on a standing mixer, then knead the dough for 8-10 minutes. If you don’t have a dough hook attachment for your stand mixer you can knead this dough by hand.
  • The dough is done when it feels smooth, slightly tacky, and can form a ball without sagging. If the dough is too sticky when mixing, you can add flour a tablespoon or so at a time until it’s tacky, not sticky.
  • Using another bowl, lightly coat the bowl with a little oil. Form the dough into a ball and rotate it in the bowl to coat the dough ball with oil.
  • Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm spot until doubled in bulk. This will take approximately one hour.
  • Sprinkle a little flour on your counter workspace and place the dough on it, dividing the dough in two and shape each into a loose ball. Let these rest on the counter for a few minutes.
  • Shape each ball of dough into a loaf, place them on pre-greased loaf pans. It’s important that the surface of the loaves be stretched taut; this helps them rise. Let the loaves rise a second time until they start to dome over the edge of the pan, this will take approximately minutes.
  • While your dough is rising, heat the oven to 425° F
  • Cut a line down the center of the tops of the loaves with a serrated knife and put them in the oven. Immediately turn down the heat to 375°F and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • Remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool completely before slicing.

Your grocery bill is probably one of your biggest household expenses each month, after your rent or mortgage and car payments. Luckily it’s also one of the easiest to cut down because you can always save a little here and a little there without feeling too much of a budget crunch. Here are some tips from DealDash to save money on your grocery bills.

Savings Start at Home

It’s true, saving money starts before you even leave your house to go shopping. I am far from an extreme couponer, but I do like to check my coupons before I go shopping to see if there’s anything that my family needs that I can save a little money by using a coupon. I also like to review the supermarket flier before I leave the house and write down any great sales that are going on.

Don’t Fall into the Coupon Trap

Yes, coupons are great and can save you a lot of money. However, it’s very easy to fall into the “coupon trap” of buying things that you don’t really need just because you have a coupon for that product.

Also, be sure to compare the store brand price to the price of the name brand item that you have the coupon for – the store brand still might be cheaper. Most store brand items taste the same, so it’s worth it to give the store brand a try. If you don’t like it you can always get the name brand one next time.

Stocking Up

It’s also helpful to look at how you buy – keep a running list of foods your family uses on a regular basis, and stock up your pantry when the prices are low. Buying foods in bulk can significantly reduce your cost per serving. Warehouse memberships don’t make sense for singles or most couples, but if you have 4+ people living in your home that you share meals with, warehouse memberships can pay for themselves after a few uses.

Don’t Be Lazy

As someone who would rather have extra free time than spend all day in the kitchen, I get it! Premade meals, frozen meals, and other convenience foods make life so much easier.  But cooking instead of just warming something up is typically cheaper and also much healthier for you and your family. If you’re short on time you can always make a stir fry. It only takes a few minutes to chop up the veggies, and if you have a rice cooker you have have a delicious and healthy meal on the table in about 20 minutes.
