You need to be very patient with your picky eater and make sure you are consistent with getting them to try new foods. You also want to start off small when you want them to try new foods. You want to only offer them a small portion so they do not think that they need to eat a lot of something that they aren’t even sure they are going to like. Start by offering a piece or two a new fruit or vegetable or a few small pieces of a meat that they haven’t tried yet.

My rule at home is that my kids have to try one bite of everything. I read once that you have to try a new food eight times before you can truly decide if you like it or not. So until I can be 100% sure that my kids have tried a new food at least that many times, they will be having one bite. 

Don’t Overdo the Snacks Before Dinner

You are going to want to balance out drinks and snacks during the day for your kids. If they get too much to eat or drink before dinner they are certainly not going to want to try something new that looks “yucky” to them. 

(Friendly) Peer Pressure Can Work

You could also consider a little bit of outside help when it comes to getting your picky eater to eat something new. Invite a favorite friend or family member over for dinner and have them show your child how yummy the new food it. It just may encourage them to try it for themselves. This works especially well if your child has a few favorite cousins who are adventurous eaters. Try to invite them over every week so your child can learn from them.

For example, the almonds that I am snacking on right now are truly a low carb and low sugar food. These particular ones that I am eating have 1 gram of sugar and 6 grams of carbs for a serving of 23 almonds. 23 almonds is definitely enough to keep the hunger at bay, but it’s important to count them out and put them aside. If you are snacking directly out of the container it’s very easy to eat a much larger serving, and with that increase your sugar and carbs.

Move Your Body

Finally, exercise is also important when attempting to reduce your blood sugar. Exercise is so good for you, especially when you do it regularly – it lowers both your blood pressure and cholesterol. Exercise burns fat and helps you lose weight, which also helps control blood sugar and diabetes. Seriously, there is no downside to exercising!

Now that spring is here and summer is on its way, there will be a lot more swimming in your future. You might be wondering if it’s okay to swim right after eating. It’s a valid question – swimming immediately after lunch: yes or no? It’s very important to figure this out, especially when there are small children involved. Almost every mother wonders this when their child wants to go immediately back into the water after having a meal or snack. DealDash investigates down below.

It really necessary to wait for a swim to avoid the risk of an accident? According to the doctors, the rules are, both for children and adults, it is not inherently dangerous to swim right after eating, but it can cause some intense stomach cramps. These stomach cramps, in turn, could cause you some trouble in the water, especially if you are an inexperienced swimmer. The types of food that you eat or drink also makes a difference.

Heavy, fried foods and carbonated beverages are some of the worst culprits when it comes to stomach cramps. Therefore, there are some of the worst foods to eat before swimming. If you do insist on swimming directly after eating, try to stay away from these types of foods and stick with lighter fare such as fruits, veggies, or sandwiches.

Is It the Water?

There is no direct correlation between stomach cramps and water itself, the issue lies with exercising so soon after eating. Most people don’t try to run a mile or play a sport directly after eating a heavy meal, so people don’t usually make the association. And let’s be honest – if you have a stomach cramp when you are playing tennis it’s easy enough to just sit down for a bit. If you’re swimming in the ocean or in the deep end of a pool it’s not that easy to just take a quick break until the pain subsides.

If you want to hop right back in the water after eating, be smart about it. Stay in water that is no higher than waist deep. That way, if you happen to get a stomach cramp it’s easy enough to just stand up and walk to safety rather than being caught in deep water when the stomach cramps hit. If you are at the beach, be sure to just wade in a bit, and never go too deep right after eating. Be sure to watch your children very carefully if they swim after eating, and never let them go in the water too deep right after eating.

If your kids are old enough to have homework, sports, and after-school activities they are old enough to help you prep and cook simple (and even complex!) meals at home. As the old idiom says, “many hands make light work”. As long as you have adequate counter space there’s not a reason in the world why your kids ages 5+ can’t help you prepare dinner.

The way to lead kids down a road of healthy eating habits is modelling – by you and the other trusted adults that they know. The more adults that they love and trust that they see eating healthy fruits and veggies, lean meats, and whole grains eating, the more they will want to emulate them. In turn, emulation will become habit, and you will have given your kids the gift of healthy eating habits. That’s a gift that can last a lifetime.

In addition to your kids helping prepare dinner, they can also help you make the week’s meal plan. For younger kids, give a few healthy choices and let them pick. For older kids you can see what they come up with on their own, and be there to guide them if they go astray into the land of junk food.

DealDash Helps: Tiny Calorie Swaps

Most of us Americans could stand to lose a few pounds. Here are some handy tips on how to reduce your calories by making tiny lifestyle changes.

Are you a little overweight? Could you stand to lose just a few pounds? I know I could! Here are a few of the sneaky little ways that I have discovered to cut a few calories here and there throughout the day. If you save 10 calories here, and 20 calories there it doesn’t take long to add up to a fairly significant savings by the end of the day.

Swap your plate. If you’re eating dinner on a large 12″ size plate swap it out for a 10″ sized one. Most people just automatically fill their plate with food, so filling in 10″ versus 12″ is a savings in calories.

Ditch the soda habit. A 12-ounce soft drink has about 150 to 180 calories. If you down two or three a day, you’re getting lots of extra calories. If the main reason that you like drinking soda is the carbonation, try drinking seltzer water instead. If plain seltzer water isn’t you thing, you can add some orange or cranberry juice to make a delicious drink. It’s more calories than the plan seltzer, but less than a can of regular soda.

Eat what you like…With a friend. Do you love ice cream? How about cheesecake? Fudge? Me too! The easiest way to save half of the calories on delicious desserts is to share them with a friend. When I go out to dinner with my husband we almost always order 1 dessert and share it. He doesn’t really care for sweets, and I don’t care to eat 1,000 calories in one sitting on a piece of cheesecake.

Switch to skim. Skim milk, that is. If you enjoy milk in your cereal, milk in your coffee, or even just a glass of cold milk then stop buying whole milk and start buying skim milk. If the change is to abrupt for you, then step it down by choosing 2%, 1%, then skim.

Eat popcorn instead of chips. If you swap out your greasy, salty chips for some fat-free popcorn you have saved lots of calories. If you switch to air popped you will save even more. Popcorn is delicious, addicting, and almost guilt free.

Make it with mustard instead of mayo. If you love to make sandwiches or chicken salad or tuna, skip the mayo and try using some delicious stone ground mustard instead. If that is too extreme for you try using a 2:1 ratio of mustard to mayo. You will still save calories and it will be even more delicious.
