Finally, it’s fine to say “No” to buying cookies, pies, candy bars, and wallpaper from every child that comes to your door. As someone who does her fair share of volunteering with Girl Scouts and the elementary school, I know how it feels to get tired of saying “Yes” to everything. Try saying “No” to things occasionally this year, and I bet you will feel happier!

Try Fun New Hobbies

2019 can be a great year if you can find a fun new hobby to participate in. It doesn’t have to be anything wild or “out there” like parasailing or skydiving, just something that you aren’t currently doing. Have you seen all of the new board games and card games that are directed towards teens and adults? If you aren’t playing some of these new games, you are missing out on some fun.

Have you taken a look at the puzzle aisle lately? It’s not all landscapes and pictures of buildings anymore. When I went on vacation my cousins, who are in their early 20’s, were doing puzzles. I teased them for a bit, but when I actually took a look at the puzzles they had, I changed my tune. No matter what you’re interested in, there is probably a puzzle to represent it. I just completed a puzzle of a craft room full of cats!

Pick Up a New Sport

You will find fun and happiness in 2019 if you find a sport that you love. Many people don’t play sports because they aren’t in the best physical shape. However, there are lots of sports that you don’t have to be in tip-top physical condition to participate. Try golfing at the driving range, frisbee, or even a kickball game with friends!

Be Kind to Yourself

And finally, one of the happiest habits of all – be kind to yourself. Everyone has a bad day, and everyone makes mistakes. remember – just because you’re having a bad day doesn’t mean that you have a bad life. Being kind to yourself is extremely important because no matter who you are or where you’re from everyone needs some kindness. And there’s no guarantee of kindness from anywhere except from within. Be kind to yourself and those around you – spread your happy habits around and make other people happy, too.

What does happiness mean to you? To some people happiness is a house filled with family and friends, and to other people happiness is backpacking around the world alone. Here are some suggestions that are fairly universal for optimum happiness.

Get a pet. It’s scientifically proven that pet owners have lower stress levels and are happier overall. If you don’t have time for a cat or a dog, try a fish or a bird. They are lower maintenance and still provide the same happiness-factor that their furry counterparts offer.

Set goals. Setting (reasonable) goals for yourself is a sure-fire road to happy times. Setting a goal and achieving or even surpassing your goal is excellent for your self-esteem and happiness. Make sure that you pick a goal that is within your reach – if you’re a couch potato I wouldn’t suggest that your goal be “Run a marathon.” but rather “Take a walk around the block every night this week.”

Get more sleep. If you average less than 7-8 hours per night of sleep then you might be making yourself irritable and unhappy without even realizing it. Turn off your TV, computer, and phone an hour early every night for a week, and hit the sack. You’ll be feeling happier in no time.

Be social. Spending more time with friends and family is definitely a great way to cheer yourself up if you’re feeling blue. Several studies have found that spending time with friends and family makes a big difference to how happy we are feeling. Bonus points for this if you spend your time together doing something fun!

Go outside. Spending time outdoors in the sunlight and fresh air can do wonders for your happiness. The sun gives you the feel-good powers of Vitamin D, and seeing the sights and hearing the sounds of nature are a great way to chase out the blues.  If you combine going outdoors with a brisk walk – well, that’s happiness right there!
