Global Antibiotic Awareness Week

The World Health Organization (WHO) is spearheading Global Antibiotic Awareness Week under the theme “Antibiotics: Handle with Care”. The campaign calls on people, governments and health and agriculture professionals to take action to address this health problem as a matter of urgency. The third Global Antibiotic Awareness Week was held last month, in November.

The WHO explained that the appearance of resistance between microbes is a natural process that allows pathogens to evolve. However, some human activities, led by the misuse of antibiotics (both in humans and in agriculture), aggravate this situation. Long story short – only take antibiotics when they are prescribed by your physician, and strive to purchase meat that is hormone and antibiotic-free. It might cost a little bit more, but it is worth it when you think about antibiotic resistance.

In order for us to be able to talk about insomnia at the level of illness or disorder, it must be “common,” which is considered three or more nights a week.

Indicators of insomnia may include involuntary waking before six and a half hours of rest, multiple instances of waking up at night without being able to get back to sleep in more than half an hour, or taking more than half an hour to fall asleep at bedtime. Again, having these things happen to you occasionally is not typically a problem. It’s only when this becomes common that it’s an issue.

Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia means excessive sleep during the day, and there are different syndromes and manifestations of different origins. For example, narcolepsy-cataplexy syndrome is characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks, episodes of paralysis during sleep, hallucinations during sleep and/or cataplexy (loss of muscle tone).

Another syndrome, sleep apnea, affects mainly (but not only) hypertensive and obese people. In apnea, breathing stops during more or less long periods of sleep, which can lead to cardiac, neurological and social problems. There are medical treatments for apnea, such as the application of a continuous-entry oxygen mask, also known as a C-Pap. This is a serious disorder, and if you suspect you suffer from sleep apnea you should schedule a visit with your doctor.

The intake of salt, by way of a variety of foods and salty preparations, is closely linked to the perception of the salty taste of our body. Interestingly enough, the orbitofrontal cortex in our brain is involved. Here’s how it works:

The higher your perception of salty taste, the more sensitive you are to the presence of salt and the lower its intake as a result. Therefore, those who do not perceive the taste well have a higher consumption of salt. In short, if you have a keen sense of taste, you will need to use less salt than someone who has duller senses. Unfortunately for the person with duller senses, their sodium intake can negatively affect their body.

A recent study published in the scientific journal “Hypertension” points out that spice lovers are more sensitive to salt and therefore consume less sodium and have lower blood pressure values. Therefore, increased consumption of spices increases the perception of salty taste and helps reduce salt consumption

Increase Your Capsaicin Intake

In addition, capsaicin, the substance found in “spicy” spices such as peppers or chili, was linked to a better activity of the brain areas that regulate the perception of taste. Therefore, having a taste for spice and its consumption is associated with a greater perception of the salty taste that contributes to reduce salt intake.

So, if you have trouble reducing salt in your diet and using less salt when preparing dishes, a scientifically proven trick would be to add spices to your dishes. Using spice is great to reduce your salt intake, but it has other benefits as well. 

In addition, spices can provide a variety of antioxidants and good nutrients that can enrich the diet. This will benefit your health in other ways beyond the reduction in salt intake that they promote.

Possible Solutions to Acid Reflux

When you read too close to your face, it requires your eyes to work harder to keep things in focus. It doesn’t cause any damage but can make your eyes feel tired.

You need to eat carrots for a good vision.

Carrots have a lot of vitamin A, but if you eat a normal diet you will get enough. If a person has myopia (He doesn’t see well up close), they could eat a ton of carrots and still he will have myopia. With that being said, though, carrots are both healthy and delicious. Why Exactly is Sitting Bad for Your Health?

Spending a lot of time sitting down also causes the muscles in the central part of the body to lose their role in helping to maintain a correct posture. Once those muscles have weakened you’re going to have a natural slouch. You will have to work hard to get those muscles back into shape. 

How Can I Avoid This Problem?

  1. Start the day with a little exercise: starting to move early in the morning won’t take up much time. About ten to fifteen minutes is enough to do a lot of good for your health and posture.
  2. Walk to your job or use an alternative means of transportation such as a bicycle. A bicycle can be a good investment when it comes to urban mobility. If this isn’t possible due to distance, perhaps you could ride your bicycle to a bus stop or train station to get to work.
  3. Choose the stairs instead of the elevator. If you go to work by the metro or train, a good plan to start moving a little more is to avoid the escalators and opt for the traditional stairs instead.
  4. Maintain a correct posture while sitting. If you are going to sit for a long time, be sure you are in a good position. Make sure your back is straight (always respecting the natural curvature of your spine) and resting on the backrest of the chair. The height of the chair should allow you to rest both feet on the floor (avoid crossing one leg over the other) and keep your knees at an angle of about ninety degrees.
  5. Obtain a standing desk. If possible, see if your employer will purchase a standing desk for you. If they won’t provide this for you, perhaps you could get a standing desk converter kit, instead.

The light from your device can help keep you awake. Definitely, avoid Netflix marathons and falling asleep to your phone. Speaking of that, no screens half an hour before trying to sleep. This will worsen the health of the person and once it becomes chronic, the need for treatment for the anxiety and depression is a “must have”. It is said that the chronic stress is the principal cause of suicide, heart attacks or even cancer.

If you’re blow drying your hair on a regular basis, then you are going to sustain a small amount of damage no matter how careful you are. This is why it makes good sense to use a deep conditioner. There are many choices available at your local big box store. They are typically sold in a “jar” type container rather than a bottle container. Try to choose one that has a very thick texture. Use the deep conditioner once or twice per week. Your hair will be looking great in no time!

It’s also a fun and positive experience to use a bath bomb or bubble bath when you’re feeling negative. Not only that, it also helps relax your muscles and helps your body feel great. When your body feels great, then your thoughts are sure to follow.

Get Some Exercise

Speaking of your body feeling great, how about some exercise? When you find those negative thoughts taking over, then it’s time to exercise and get some of those “feel good” endorphins flowing. It doesn’t matter what kind of exercise. You can go to the gym, go for a run, or even just put on some music and dance. Anything that gets your body moving will help chase those negative thoughts right out the window. It’s not just your thoughts that will improve, either. Once your body gets even more fit and strong I bet you will have negative thoughts less often as well.

Growing out your hair from a shorter haircut can be tough and take quite a long time, but it is do-able. Get Frequent Trims

I had always heard the hair growing tip “get frequent trims”, but it never made sense to me. Why cut your hair if you’re trying to make it grow? The reason that you should be getting frequent trims if you’re trying to grow out your hair is split ends. Hair that isn’t trimmed frequently gets split ends, and surprisingly enough, they can split all the way up to the scalp. This is why it’s important to take good care of your hair and catch those split ends before they get started.

Avoid Harsh Shampoos

Go look on the back of your shampoo and read the ingredients. If there are any ingredients with the word “sulfate”, then you should think about getting a different shampoo. Sulfates are chemicals make your hair weak and brittle. Weak and brittle hair will lead to breakage which will keep you from growing your hair out. Use shampoos labeled as being sulfate-free. It used to be difficult to find sulfate-shampoo, but now you can get them at any big box store or salon that sells shampoo.

How Are You Washing Your Hair?

Hopefully, the answer to “How are you washing your hair?” is “Every 2nd or 3rd day, with cool water.” I grew up washing my hair every single day, but apparently, it’s much healthier for your hair to wash it every-other or every third day instead of daily. Washing your hair too often can lead to weaker hair.

Hair is also especially prone to breaking when it’s wet, please be very careful if you try to brush your hair before it’s dry. First use a comb, then follow up with a brush that’s made for wet hair if you must brush it when it’s wet.

Use Less Heat

You’ve probably heard this before, but heat-styling can be very damaging to your hair. If you must use a blow dryer on your hair, then use it on the low or medium setting instead of high heat.

The same goes for flat irons and curling irons – use a lower heat setting. It’s also much better for your hair if you don’t use these heating tools on consecutive days. This will give your hair a chance to recover and also there will be less chance to cause heat damage to your hair.

Don’t Let Them Sweat

Instead of drying out the sweat, how about not letting them sweat at all? Surprisingly enough, you can put antiperspirant on your feet.  Yes, the same exact stuff that you put under your arms to control your sweating. You can use a spray, stick, or gel antiperspirant on the bottoms of your feet. You should try to do this right before you go to bed at night. Otherwise, be sure to put on socks after the antiperspirant has dried, otherwise, the bottoms of your feet will be slippery.

Give Your Feet a Soak

There are many different foot soaks that you can try. Some different types of foot soaks include apple cider vinegar, epsom salt, or even tea! Yes, all of these ingredients can each make a wonderful foot soak. Try one of these ingredients each weekend for a great variety of foot soaking fun.

Ingredients:

  • Spaghetti squash, cut in half
  • 1 Jar pasta sauce (or 3 Cups homemade sauce)
  • 1 Tbs Italian seasoning
  • 4 Ounces Mozzarella cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
  2. Place both halves of spaghetti squash on a baking sheet, flesh side down
  3. Add 1/4 inch water to the baking sheet
  4. Bake squash for 40 minutes (or until tender) remove the squash from the oven
  5. Using a fork as a tiny rake, rake the squash’s flesh from the skin into strands
  6. Put all of the strands back into the squash flesh
  7. Add the sauce to the top of the squash strands, then the cheese and seasonings
  8. Put the squash back into the oven for another 3-5 minutes, til the cheese bubbles
  9. Enjoy!

If you are snacking directly out of the container it’s very easy to eat a much larger serving, and with that increase your sugar and carbs.

Finally, exercise is also important when attempting to reduce your blood sugar. Exercise is so good for you, especially when you do it regularly – it lowers both your blood pressure and cholesterol. Exercise burns fat and helps you lose weight, which also helps control blood sugar and diabetes. Seriously, there is no downside to exercising!

Not only is green tea a delightful, light-flavored beverage, it’s also chock full of health benefits. Surprisingly enough, it is even considered an important nutritional means for warding off cancer. Isn’t that amazing?

How Do I Make Green Tea?

There are three main ways that you can make green tea. They are tea bag, tea ball, or loose tea. Each of these methods is pretty simple, and no matter which way you choose you will end up with healthy, nutritious, and delicious green tea.

Tea Bag –

This one is easy! Simply put your tea bag into your cup and pour boiling water over it. Steep the tea for approximately 5 minutes before drinking.

Tea Ball –

Also very simple, the tea ball is very much like the tea bag. Just fill up your tea ball with 1 scoop of green tea, pour boiling water into your cup, and add the tea ball. Steep the tea for approximately 5 minutes before drinking.

Loose Tea –

The loose tea method is personally my least favorite, but some people love it! Firstly, you will need a teapot that’s easy to clean. Fill the teapot with approximately the amount of water you will need to fill your teacup or cups if you are making multiple cups. Boil your water, but turn it off as soon as it begins to bubble. Put 1 scoop of green tea into the teapot for each cup of green tea that you would like to make. Let it steep for a few minutes, and then pour through a strainer into your cup.

If you don’t mind the occasional stray tea leaf in your cup, then you don’t need to use the strainer. Personally, I dislike getting any tea leaves into my cup, so I always use a strainer.

What Else Can Be Done With Green Tea?

Traditionally, green tea is consumed hot and plain, with no additions. However, if you are drinking green tea for the health benefits and would prefer a little bit of flavor, try adding something from my list below.

  • Lemon
  • Orange
  • Sugar
  • Honey
  • Mint

Coffee should be black, nothing more, if you want to keep it healthiest. When you add more flavors, you make your coffee more of a risk to your health. This is because they contain high doses of sugar and artificial flavors and coloring. If you do not like your coffee to be natural and you want to change the taste, try some drops of vanilla or mint or make it sweeter with a more natural sweetener like honey or Stevia.

Grind it Fresh

Remember that if you use coffee beans, you should keep them in the fridge. This is especially important if the package has been opened. The flavor will last for a longer time if you keep things sealed and in the fridge. The fresher the coffee tastes, the less likely you will be to add extra sweeteners and flavors.

Have you ever noticed that after the long winter your body feels different in Spring?

In most parts of the USA the winter is cold, rough, dark, and rather unpleasant. Have you ever noticed that when Spring comes it feels like your body has a weight lifted off of it, and everything looks a little brighter? It’s Getting Warmer

The daylight savings time change to the clock created a little discomfort in your life, I know. Also, with Spring general cleaning, you became more stressed, and the rising temperatures don’t help.

Don’t worry; the good part is going to come soon. At least, this is what scientists from The University of North Carolina are saying. As the temperatures start to rise, our bodies start to adapt to the warmth, and this changes the way we behave during the day. Our metabolism and well-being along with the way we think is going to be less stressed. Here is a list of the most important changes to your body during Spring, when our immune system becomes stronger:

Energy

The warmer temperatures are taking us outside, and we throw off the heavy, bulky clothing. We start to take walks and enjoy jogging and other physical activities around our home. Walks generate more oxygen to your brain, and you are going to have more energy to spare. You might find yourself able to do more things than you were doing during winter time.

Light

The sun and the clear sky is going to be more gentle to your skin than the harsh winter wind. Along with bronzing your skin, the sun boosts the vitamin D in your bones, and your endorphin levels rise because of the exposure to the ultraviolet rays. This, in turn, makes you happier and puts you in a better frame of mind.

Optimism

In the late ’80s, scientist Norman E. Rosenthal discovered Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a disorder that affects a huge percentage of the world’s population. Spring brings optimism and good thoughts because of the high level of endorphins you have when it is hot outside, the flowers are blooming, and nature revives itself.

Immunity

Along with the heat comes the fact that you can spend more time out in the fresh air, which limits the contact with various viruses. You will not be exposed to the flu virus so easily, and we start to eat healthier, with fresh fruits and veggies. This way, your immunity becomes way stronger than it was during winter time.

DealDash Asks: Are You Maximizing Your Workout?

Most people try to work out and stay healthy. However, you might not be getting as much out of your workout as you should. Here are some tips and ideas from DealDash.

If you’re starting from couch potato you can’t expect to get to marathoner overnight. Even so, regularly working out can be very beneficial for both your physical and mental health.  For your body, it can help you lose weight, get stronger, reduce health problems, and boost energy. Mentally, it can significantly reduce stress. Unfortunately, most people don’t know how to make the most out of their workout, especially if they are a beginner. Let DealDash help.

Make a Schedule (And Stick to it)

You don’t (and shouldn’t) work out every single day, but you should definitely make a schedule. If you want to make the most out of your workouts you’ll want to plan them out. For instance, you might want to do your upper body on Mondays and Fridays, and your lower body on Wednesdays and Sundays. It doesn’t really matter how you split it up, just be sure to take a couple of days off per week. If you want to do some other type of light exercise that day such as walking or swimming, that’s great as well.

Don’t just jump right into your workout. Take some time at the beginning of your workout for warming up. Also, include some time at the end of your workout for cooling down. Your warm-up and cool-down are important so that you don’t accidentally injure the muscles in your body.

Now, Change Up That Schedule!

Yes, I know that I just advised above to make a workout schedule. The schedule is important, and it’s good for your body to stick to it. However, once your body has become accustomed to the schedule, it’s time to change it up. This doesn’t mean that your workout has to be longer or more strenuous – just different.

For example, if you normally jog on the treadmill for an hour on Mondays, then change that to using the rowing machine instead. Or if you normally lift weights on Thursdays, then take a boxing class instead. Changing your schedule every month or so can be very beneficial for your workout goals.

Keep a Workout Journal

A big reason that people don’t progress in their fitness is because they don’t keep track of it. If you get a notebook and jot down your workouts every time, their duration, how you feel, and your goals for the future, you’ll be ahead of the game. Your workout journal doesn’t have to be anything fancy – you can even just get a calendar with big squares to write in, and do it on there. It’s important that you can look back at your progress and see how far you’ve come – and look to the future and see where you want to go.

Riding a bike is something that’s fun, useful, and good for your body. There are different types of bikes for different activities. Read on to learn about them.

This might come as a surprise for you, but did you know that there are more than 30 types of bikes? These styles and varieties of bicycles are constantly changing in order to satisfy as many needs as possible. In this article, DealDash will take a look at the most common bikes and their uses.

City Bike

City bikes are the most widespread bikes in the world. They are made for urban use. These bikes offer a comfortable riding position and a simple design. Racing bike

A racing bike does what its name says- it races, fast. This is why it’s better for competitive use. The frame, made of carbon fibers, is lighter than the other types of bikes. The riding position is also very unbalanced towards the handlebars for faster movement. Thus, this is not a comfortable bike to just ride around on. 

Cycle tourism bike

A cycle tourism bike is intended to ride for long distances, often with a large quantity of bags. There are two types to choose from, depending on the ground you are traveling on. The first type is made for street routes. The second type is for rough roads and hill climbing. The difference between the two is the size of the wheels and the robustness of the frame. These bikes are not as common in the USA as they are in other countries.

Hybrid bike

A hybrid bike is the combination of a racing bike because it has the same frame, and a cycle tourism bike thanks to the more relaxed riding position.  Now, hybrid bikes are becoming more and more popular.

People have wondered for ages, is it okay to swim after a meal? DealDash does a little research on the matter.

Now that spring is here and summer is on its way, there will be a lot more swimming in your future. You might be wondering if it’s okay to swim right after eating. It’s a valid question – swimming immediately after lunch: yes or no? It’s very important to figure this out, especially when there are small children involved. Almost every mother wonders this when their child wants to go immediately back into the water after having a meal or snack. DealDash investigates down below.

What Do the Doctors Say?

It really necessary to wait for a swim to avoid the risk of an accident? According to the doctors, the rules are, both for children and adults, it is not inherently dangerous to swim right after eating, but it can cause some intense stomach cramps. These stomach cramps, in turn, could cause you some trouble in the water, especially if you are an inexperienced swimmer. The types of food that you eat or drink also makes a difference.

Heavy, fried foods and carbonated beverages are some of the worst culprits when it comes to stomach cramps. Therefore, there are some of the worst foods to eat before swimming. If you do insist on swimming directly after eating, try to stay away from these types of foods and stick with lighter fare such as fruits, veggies, or sandwiches.

Is It the Water?

There is no direct correlation between stomach cramps and water itself, the issue lies with exercising so soon after eating. Most people don’t try to run a mile or play a sport directly after eating a heavy meal, so people don’t usually make the association. And let’s be honest – if you have a stomach cramp when you are playing tennis it’s easy enough to just sit down for a bit. If you’re swimming in the ocean or in the deep end of a pool it’s not that easy to just take a quick break until the pain subsides.

If you want to hop right back in the water after eating, be smart about it. Stay in water that is no higher than waist deep. That way, if you happen to get a stomach cramp it’s easy enough to just stand up and walk to safety rather than being caught in deep water when the stomach cramps hit. If you are at the beach, be sure to just wade in a bit, and never go too deep right after eating. Be sure to watch your children very carefully if they swim after eating, and never let them go in the water too deep right after eating.

Oral Care

You can also put on a shower cap and leave it on all night for extra hydtation.

DealDash – Exercise Even If It’s A Chore

Exercise is so good for you, yet can be tiring and time-consuming. Here are some ideas from DealDash to help.

Every magazine, blogger, and celebrity advice guru goes on about the importance of exercise – understandably so, since staying active has so many benefits in terms of physical and mental health.  However, it can be hard to make time to go to the gym for a full workout. Also, life as a parent, grandparent, or even pet parent can be tiring enough that just the thought of working out is exhausting.  Here are some tips from DealDash for ways to stay active that won’t overwhelm you after a busy day and can be adapted to fit any schedule:

  • Use internet resources.  If you find you can’t squeeze in a trip to the gym, check out some instructional workout videos on Youtube.  There are lots of videos of various lengths and intensities, many of which do not require any equipment.  Make sure to search using keywords like “gentle,” “cardio,” “15 minute,” or whatever you prefer. If you’re into a more high-intensity workout, you can find that as well. 
  • Try some yoga.  It’s a great way to combine exercise with peace and solitude, so if you get a little time to yourself yoga can kill two birds with one stone.  And many yoga poses are harder work than they look – there may not be any running or heavy lifting but there’s a lot of muscle work and you can certainly work up a sweat!  Try a class or look online for some poses for beginners. If you can’t make time for a regular yoga session, try computer yoga!
  • Walk (or run!) the dog.  Family dog need a walk?  Knock two things off the to-do list at once and get sweating while you take the dog out.  To some extent this depends on the animal, but many dogs are happy to jog or run with you rather than walking; some even prefer it! If you don’t have a dog but would like a furry running companion why not get a side-gig as a dog walker and make a little extra cash?

Exercise as a Family

  • Get the kids involved.  Don’t have any time to yourself to work out?  Find an activity for the whole family that’ll serve as a form of exercise as well.  Maybe the kids want to play tag or kick a ball around or go to the pool, or maybe you can get everyone together for a family hike.  Exercising with your kids encourages healthy habits and can be fun for everyone.
  • Walk when you can.  It’s a simple thing, but walking short distances instead of driving can make a big difference, and you don’t even need to change your plans aside from leaving a few minutes earlier.  It’s environmentally friendly, as well!

No one is perfect, and you shouldn’t expect yourself to work out all the time. Luckily, any movement helps when it comes to staying fit and being a good example for your family.
