What are antibiotics and how do they work? Let DealDash explain it to you, it could improve your health.
Antibiotics are powerful drugs that fight bacterial infections. If used properly, they can save lives. These drugs work by killing bacteria or preventing reproduction. This gives the body’s defenses time for them to become strong and fight off infection. The winter season is fully here. You or your family might need this medication to fight off the bacteria in your body. Read on for more information from DealDash.
When Shouldn’t You Use Antibiotics?
Antibiotics fight bacteria and not viruses. This means using them to treat colds, flu, bronchitis, and sore throats (unless the latter is caused by a bacterium) can do more harm than good. The reason that you don’t want to use the antibiotics if they aren’t truly needed is antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotic Resistance and You
Antibiotic resistance is why antibiotics sometimes do not work. This antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change or mutate in a way that reduces the effectiveness of drugs. These drugs designed to cure or prevent infections. In this way, they survive and continue to multiply, causing further damage.
How does bacterial resistance occur?
Bacteria enter our body causing illness and the appearance of the first symptoms. With the onset of the infection process, the antibiotic is taken by the patient. During this intake, along with the reproductive mechanism of the bacteria, some antibiotic-resistant “mutated” bacteria may appear.
As a result of this resistance, the surviving and antibiotic-resistant bacteria begin to reproduce. This results in the infection still being present in our body. Also, the treatment becomes difficult. Also, increasing the health expense of having to search for a new antibiotic with which to treat it. This is something that you definitely do not want to happen.
Global Antibiotic Awareness Week
The World Health Organization (WHO) is spearheading Global Antibiotic Awareness Week under the theme “Antibiotics: Handle with Care”. The campaign calls on people, governments and health and agriculture professionals to take action to address this health problem as a matter of urgency. The third Global Antibiotic Awareness Week was held last month, in November.
World Health Organization
The WHO explained that the appearance of resistance between microbes is a natural process that allows pathogens to evolve. However, some human activities, led by the misuse of antibiotics (both in humans and in agriculture), aggravate this situation. Long story short – only take antibiotics when they are prescribed by your physician, and strive to purchase meat that is hormone and antibiotic-free. It might cost a little bit more, but it is worth it when you think about antibiotic resistance.
