DealDash: Are You a Smoker? You Need Antioxidants

dealdash Don’t worry, I’m not going to lecture you. But DealDash encourages you to up your antioxidant intake.

Are you a smoker? Antioxidants are going to help you with your health. You already know the negative effects of smoking on your body, so I do not have to tell you more about it. I won’t lecture you, I promise. In this case, nutritionists that study the health of smokers recommend that they eat healthy food that can help reduce the negative effects of your habit. Even more than that, specialists also say that certain foods can help smokers to quit smoking.

Antioxidants Neutralize Free Radicals

In the body of a smoker a phenomenon named “oxidative stress,” happens. This action appears when the production of molecules, named free radicals, exceeds the capacity of body’s production against oxidation. To increase the health state of the body, smokers need antioxidants. This is a nutritive substance that can be found in foods that should be consumed daily. In the category of antioxidants, some foods play a significant role in the prevention of chronic diseases like cancer, heart issues, and brain issues.

In order to reduce the negative effects of free radicals in their body, smokers need to up their antioxidant food intake. Nutritionists from many countries say that food that has antioxidant proprieties increase the immunity of a smoker. These foods can also help melt the fat from the arteries and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Eat Your Veggies

Smokers especially need to eat vegetables that are rich in fiber. In order to reduce the unhealthy effects of the tobacco in the body, smokers should also consume vegetables frequently like broccoli, beans, cucumber, etc. These vegetables have a lot of fiber and minerals. They also include a rich source of Vitamin B. Smokers should also reduce or even eliminate onion and garlic because they have a rich deposit of sulfur, a real enemy to free radicals.

Fish and vegetable oils also have antioxidant proprieties. You should not exclude ocean fish from your diet if you are a smoker. They have a rich deposit of Omega 3 and Omega 6, known to have antioxidant effects.

What Foods Can Reduce Smoking?

Yes, if you can believe it, there is a food that can help a smoker avoid smoking. Cinnamon sticks, when consumed daily, can give a smoker the power to throw away his pack of cigarettes and to smoke less. The same effects can be found in cinnamon mints. Also, crunchy food such as carrots and apples tend to make a smoker mindlessly snack on them, and they forget about smoking as much. The same can also be said of chewing gum.

DealDash Makes Easter Fun for Kids

DealDash Easter

Easter is tomorrow, have you got everything set up for the kids or grandkids? If you need a little help, here are some tips from DealDash.

What does your family like to do on Easter? Do you have any fun family traditions? Easter started as a religious holiday, of course, but there are many people who don’t practice religion who enjoy the fun secular aspects of the holiday. Here are the best things to do on Easter when you have kids or grandkids.

Easter Egg Hunt

In a previous DealDash article, we talked about coloring Easter eggs. If you followed my suggestions, you should have lots of eggs to hide for your Easter egg hunt. If you didn’t dye your eggs, you will need to run out today and pick up some of the plastic eggs and put candies and little surprises in them to hide for the kids.

After hiding your eggs, be sure to jot down where you hid all of the Easter eggs in case they are not all found by the egg hunters. This is especially important if you’re hiding real eggs, as these will eventually go bad and start to smell really terrible.

Baskets of Easter Fun

Having small kids means making Easter baskets! You can get baskets that are pre-filled with small toys and candy from the big box store or even the supermarket. Personally, though, I prefer to buy an empty basket and fill it up myself. This way I know that my children will like everything that’s in the basket, and I can keep the candy to toy ratio in check. I would much rather they have a few small toys, stuffies, or games than too much extra candy. Also, my kids go crazy for those tiny clementine oranges, so those are a great healthy treat to put in their baskets that they love.

Family Brunch

What child doesn’t enjoy seeing their cousins and grandparents? Be sure to invite the relatives over for the egg hunt, and ask them to stay for an Easter brunch as well. Easter brunch is typically ham or turkey and can include many side dishes such as glazed carrots, fruit salad, and pastries.

As you’re enjoying the brunch with your family, try to include the children in some of the festivities. Children love to feel helpful, let them set the table, fill the water glasses, or take the guests jackets and put them away.

Before, during, and after the brunch, be sure to take lots of photos of the happenings. You never know how many more Easters you will get with great-grandma, so it’s always wise to preserve these wonderful family gatherings.

DealDash Recipe: Unicorn Fudge!

dealdash fudge recipe

Easter is coming. Whip up a batch of unicorn fudge to please everyone with a sweet tooth.

Have you ever tried unicorn fudge? It’s delicious, adorable, and fun to eat. It’s easier to make than traditional fudge, and it comes out so much prettier. You can adjust the recipe to make different colors and add different toppings. Grab your kids or grandkids and start a batch of unicorn fudge. Here is the recipe from DealDash.

Ingredients:

  • white sugar 3 Cups
  • 34 cup  unsalted butter
  • 34 cup half-and-half
  • 12 ounces (1 bag) white chocolate chips
  • 8 ounces marshmallow crème
  • Multi-pack of food coloring
  • Fun sprinkle sof your choice

Directions:

  • Grease and spread foil over an 8×8 glass dish.
  • Heat up the sugar, butter, and half-and-half in a saucepan. Turn the heat to medium and bring the delicious mixture to a boil. Stir very well with a wooden spoon for about 4 minutes.
  • Stir in the marshmallow crème and chocolate chips. Remove the mixture from the heat. Fold in the marshmallow crème and chocolate chips, stirring well with the wooden spoon until fully melted and has a smooth texture.
  • Separate the fudge mixture into however many bowls as you would like different color layers. If you just want 1 color then 1 bowl is fine. However, if you want 4 different colors separate into 4 different bowls, and so on.
  • Add a few drops of each food coloring to each bowl. Stir well until the colors are well mixed.
  • Layer each color into the 8×8 glass dish. Smooth out each layer with a rubber spatula.
  • Use a chopstick to swirl the colors around gently if you choose. You may skip this step if you would like the colors more defined.
  • Sprinkle the fun sprinkles over the fudge.
  • Place the fudge in the refrigerator to harden up. Allow it to chill for at least 6-12 hours until the fudge has completely hardened.
  • Slice the unicorn fudge into pieces. You may add more sprinkles if you so desire.

DealDash fudge

These little fudge pieces come out so cute! They are just adorable and perfect for Spring birthday parties or Easter brunch dessert. Give them a try and see if you like them better than the traditional chocolate fudge pieces.

DealDash Presents: Surprising Household Cleaners

DealDash cleaners

Cleaning your house doesn’t have to equal expensive cleaning products. DealDash takes a peek at things around the home that you can use to clean.

Did you know that you can solve your cleaning issues with everyday things that you can find in your kitchen? It’s surprising but true! You won’t believe that such simple products could do so many tough cleaning jobs.

Pepper

Did you know that soap residue can cause the colors on your favorite clothing to look faded? Add a teaspoon of black pepper to the wash cycle (along with cold water detergent) the next time you’re doing a load of colored clothing. Be sure to wash on cold.

How it works: The pepper exfoliates the soap residue that causes clothing to fade. The pepper washes away with the rinse cycle, just as if you had spilled pepper on your clothing and washed it.

Milk

Oops! You forgot to put the cap on your pen, and the ink ended up staining your shirt pocket. Don’t worry!

Pour some milk on the spot and let your shirt on the edge of your bathtub for 1 hour to 24 hours (depending on how severe the ink spot) and everything will be back to normal! Amazing, isn’t it?

Mayonnaise

Where does your child like to draw? Hopefully, it’s on paper. But as the mom of 3 little ones, I know that they’re just as likely to be drawing on the walls and furniture. Put some mayonnaise on the “masterpiece” and let it like that for 10 minutes. Gently rub and wash with a towel. The furniture and walls should be like brand new.

However, please test this in a very small and inconspicuous area. This could possibly cause more harm than good if you have any special finishes on your walls or special fabric on your furniture.

Garlic

Ouch! You were handling something with wooden parts, and there is a sliver in your finger? Fear splinters no more! Rub the spot with some garlic and the splinter will come out immediately.

Sugar

Don’t waste money on sophisticated bug sprays, but rather prepare your best weapon against mosquitos at home. Here’s how:

  1. Mix one cup of milk with five spoons of sugar and a spoon of black pepper
  2. boil the mixture for 10 minutes.
  3. Let it cool down and pour it in small containers that you will put in the buggy places.

Carbonated Water

Have you ever spilled red wine on your carpet? Oh, how I wish I knew about this magic trick when I did this myself years back!

First, don’t panic. Pour some carbonated water on the spot and let it dry. The wine spot will miraculously disappear!

Bay Leaf

Did you know that bay leaves are the worst enemies of insects? Put some in your garden and keep your plants insect-proofed.

Banana

Before you throw the banana peel into the compost bin or garbage, take those long strips and use the inside part to rub your cutlery, leather shoes, and leather sofa and then wipe them with a soft cloth. Voila! Shiny!

Vinegar

Oh, books could be filled with the many uses of this magic liquid.  The claims are well deserved.  Did you know that vinegar can be used to clean the spots on the tea kettle or pots and pans? How?

Water + Vinegar + Boil. Rinse well and look how clean your kettle or pots and pans are now.

DealDash Kitchen Tricks

DealDash Kitchen

Do you dread cleaning the kitchen? Cleaning your kitchen will go much faster and easier if you use these tricks from DealDash.

Do you wish that you had a clean kitchen, but you don’t find enough time to do it by yourself? You don’t have to feel bad about it! Remember that you are a hard working person who deserves appreciation, especially if you’re the main one who cleans in your household. If you read this article, then you are going to find some helpful advice from DealDash you can use when cleaning up in your kitchen.

Luckily for you, there are some “shortcuts” with which you can achieve this dream without making a significant effort. Not only are they less labor intensive, they also reduce the time you spend for cleaning as well.

Stove and Oven

When you are cleaning your kitchen, you should know that the last thing you need to clean is your stove. That’s because most of the time, the stove is the dirtiest, oiliest, and most stained with different sauces appliance in your kitchen. By cleaning the stove and oven last, we will avoid spreading the oil from the stove to the whole kitchen. Don’t forget to take care of the tools you use when cooking. Put them in warm water to soak with some detergent so that they will be easier to clean.

Don’t forget to take care of the tools you use when cooking, such as the tongs and spatula. Many people store them in a vase or jar on top of the stove, or next to the stove top. They accumulate dirt and oil by just being next to the stove. Put them in warm water to soak with some detergent so that they will be easier to clean.

Surprisingly enough, the oven and the stove can be kept cleaned with the help of some dryer sheets! The soaps inside the dryer sheets can help loosen up some of that caked on grime.

Sink

Disinfect your sink. I know it is hard to believe, but your kitchen sink can hold more germs than your bathroom! To sanitize it properly, you need to wash the sink with water and detergent. After that, you can scrub it with vinegar, and finally some hydrogen peroxide.

If you have a stainless steel sink, you can give it a nice glowing shine if you wipe it with a napkin in which you put some drops of natural oil. You can use either mineral oil or olive oil. The natural oil helps to drain every drop of water and prevents future mold accumulation. This maintains the clean sink  for an extended period of time.

Microfiber, Your Best Friend

If you are using paper towels to clean, you are making one of your biggest cleaning mistakes. Use microfiber towels. After one use they can be cleaned in the washing machine and reutilized. You will have significant savings on your kitchen supplies.

Sponges

It is well known that kitchen sponges and scrub brushes are the perfect terrain for the development of bacteria. This is why it’s a good idea that every night, after the last use, you squeeze it hard enough to remove most of the water and put it in the microwave for a minute or two. The remaining water will steam out, and the germs will be killed with the heat.

Use the Right Fruits and Veggies

If you want to make the perfect smoothie it’s important to use fresh and in-season fruits and veggies. Cravings are rough! If you are craving a smoothie and don’t have any fresh fruit and vegetables it’s fine to use bagged frozen ones, however, it won’t be a perfect smoothie, but it will still be healthy and delightful. Adding these extra ingredients can really boost the taste and health quotient of your smoothie. Give them a try!

DealDash Experiments in the Kitchen

dealdash kitchen

Don’t be afraid to experiment in the kitchen. The worst that can happen is one ruined dinner. Here are some ideas from DealDash.

Do you think that you aren’t a good cook? Do people occasionally make little jokes about your cooking skills? The main problem that people have who tell themselves that they cannot cook well is a lack of patience. They turn the burners up too high to get it done faster, or they don’t pay enough attention to the instructions in the recipe. They might not even have enough patience or confidence in themselves to master the recipe and put their own personal spin on it. In my experience, the skills that you need to possess in order to be a good cook is a will to follow the recipe’s instructions in addition to mixing in a little of your own creative spirit.

First, Pay Attention to the Recipe

Cooking is akin to going to a paint night in the kitchen. Imagine that the painting instructor is there to tell you what brush to use and what colors that you should use in each area. Now transfer this analogy over to the kitchen. The recipe serves as your instructor, it tells you what temperature to set the oven at, what ingredients to use, and most importantly, it tells you how much of those ingredients that are needed. Too much of an ingredient and it can overpower your dish, too little of an ingredient can make your food bland and boring. Have patience, follow the recipe to a “T”, and you will end up with delicious, predictable food.

Next, Throw in Some Experimentation

To be an excellent cook you must also be willing to experiment once you have mastered a recipe. Perhaps you have used parsley in a dish in order to jazz it up? Maybe the parsley made it more interesting and delicious. This could transfer over to another recipe that is similar in nature. That parsley could have been used in a chicken alfredo dish, but it would also fit into a simple spaghetti bolognese dish as well. Adding more variety to your ingredients translates into more intrigue in regard to the dish’s flavor.

Don’t be scared of the kitchen, be brave, have confidence that your dish will be delicious. Remember these key tips and you will be whipping up dishes to impress your loved ones in no time.

DealDash – The Benefits of Drinking Tea

DealDash Tea

Tea is not only delicious but is also quite good for your health. DealDash is here to tell you some of the benefits.

Tea is Very Hydrating

Tea is extremely hydrating for the body. Luckily enough, tea is delicious and comes in so many different flavors. Water is fairly tasteless, so sometimes it can be difficult to make yourself drink the full 8 servings of water per day that you need. With all of the different flavors of tea that are available, you can drink your fill while hydrating your body.

Tea is Full of Antioxidants

As we talked about in the olive oil article the other day, antioxidants are extremely important to your body. Antioxidants do not occur naturally in the body, and they help prevent cancer. Tea is jam-packed full of antioxidants.

Tea Has Less Caffeine than Coffee

Do you love coffee in the morning but dislike some of the side-effects such as the jitters? Well, trade your coffee in for tea in the morning! Herbal teas have no caffeine, and black tea has less than 50 percent of what usually is found in coffee.

Tea is Good for Your Teeth

Unlike soda or juice, tea is good for your teeth. Yes, really! When you drink tea it changes the pH in your mouth. This can help prevent cavities. Also, unlike other beverages tea does not erode your tooth enamel.

Different Teas, Different Cures

Many different types of herbal teas are good for different problems in your body. For example, it’s widely known that chamomile tea is an excellent solution for anxiety. Also, drinking ginger tea is excellent for nausea. When I was pregnant with my little boy I drank a lot of ginger tea to calm my nausea.

Tea Can Help With Diabetes (Type 2)

If you have diabetes and like tea, you’re in luck. Tea can be beneficial to people with Type 2 diabetes. Studies suggest that compounds in green tea could help diabetics better process sugars. Just be sure not to put any sugar in your tea, please.

DealDash Cooks With Olive Oil

dealdash olive oil

Olive oil is heart healthy and delicious. However, some people prefer to cook with butter or even canola oil. Let DealDash persuade you to use olive oil.

Do you prefer to cook a dish with canola oil, butter or olive oil? That is a question that many home cooks ask themselves when they are preparing to make a dish. I have often asked myself in the past which would be the best oil got the job, and a conundrum that I have seen on competition cooking shows such as Chopped. This is also a topic of discussion that I have seen on talk shows and in magazines as well. Let DealDash show you the best oil for the job. Hint – it’s olive oil!

The Best Oil for the Job

When you are cooking with high heat, most oils will dissipate. This makes butter seem like the better alternative if you are just looking for a quick answer. That might be the case at times, but olive oil will not dissipate like other oils such as canola or vegetable oil. It is also a much healthier alternative to the unhealthy and fatty stick of butter that you were thinking about for your dish.

Most people in this day in age want to cook as healthily as possible for their families. Gone are the days when butter or even Crisco was a staple in every meal that was cooked at home. Olive oil is a much better alternative; it has a wonderfully light and delicious taste as well as being significantly healthier.

How Can Olive Oil Be Healthy?

Olive oil might have some fats, but luckily for us olive oil connoisseurs, they have been proven to be the healthy varieties of fat. These fats in small doses will not negatively affect your health as long as you are eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Though the fats in olive oil are the healthy variety, moderation should be exercised with everything in life, and that applies to the olive oil vs. butter dilemma as well. Too much of anything is usually unhealthy, so use your common sense in the kitchen when you are preparing your recipes.

Olive Oil Contains Antioxidants

Another excellent win for olive oil when it comes to health is is the fact that olive oil contains antioxidants. If you are unfamiliar with antioxidants, antioxidants help prevent or stop cell damage caused by oxidants. Your body does not produce antioxidant vitamins naturally, so it is important to include antioxidants in your diet, be it through foods or supplements. Other foods that contain antioxidants are blueberries, cranberries, and pecans.

Ditch the Butter Stick

There are many reasons why olive oil is a better choice than butter in a dish. Butter is full of fat, and there are no positive health aspects to the addition of butter in your home cooked dishes. It provides flavor, but at an unfortunate cost to your health.

When using olive oil instead of butter, the positives outweigh the negatives. I find that in my experience in the kitchen, using olive oil can make some dishes much more tasty and exciting.

Olive Oil Garlic Bread, Anyone?

Try making some delicious homemade garlic bread with olive oil. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees, sprinkle some olive oil and garlic salt on the bread, and put it in the oven. You can enjoy the results in about 8 minutes. It’s delicious and heart healthy as well. Enjoy!

I hope that you found this new DealDash article on olive oil helpful. Reading the DealDash Reviews and our sister blog DealDash Tips Blog daily is the best way to keep informed on all things DealDash.

If you are shopping for a kitchen item, small appliance, or just about anything else, check DealDash first. DealDash has it all! Visit DealDash now. DealDash wants to help you in the kitchen. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Recipe – Mushroom Risotto

DealDash Mushroom Risotto

Mushroom risotto is not only delicious but very versatile as well. Here is a yummy recipe from DealDash.

Risotto is a delicious Italian rice dish that is easily customized to your taste once you get the optimal technique down. This isn’t your garden variety white rice which cooks without any babysitting needed in a rice cooker. Risotto needs to be stirred and watched the entire time it is on the stove. The result is worth it, though. Mushroom risotto is a rich, creamy, and textured rice that can be served as an appetizer, main course, or side dish. Here is a recipe from DealDash for you to enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups arborio rice.
  • 1 lb sliced portobello and/or crimini mushrooms
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 6-8 cups of chicken, vegetable, or beef broth
  • 1/2-1 cup dry white wine, like a Sauvignon Blanc
  • Salt & Pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Heat 3 tablespoons olive oil in your largest skillet on medium heat.
  2. Dice 1 small onion and 2 cloves of garlic and add to the oil.
  3. Remove stems, and thinly slice your mushrooms while the onions & garlic cook.
  4. Add the mushrooms to the skillet after 3-4 minutes
  5. Add salt and pepper and stir to coat the mushrooms in oil.
  6. Using a sauce pot, heat up 6 cups of broth while the mushrooms are cooking. Do not heat all the way to boiling.
  7. Cook the mushrooms for 3-5 minutes
  8. Add 1 tablespoon of butter
  9. Add the 2 cups of arborio rice and constantly stir. Once the butter has melted, add the rice and stir so that it is coated with the oil and butter. Cook for 1 minute before adding any liquid.
  10. Add 1/2 cup of white wine. Add the white wine and stir into the rice. Cook together until almost all of the wine is evaporated or absorbed into the rice.
  11. Add one ladle of hot broth. Once the wine is absorbed, use a ladle to add the first cup of broth to the rice mixture
  12. Constantly stir the broth and rice. You cannot stir risotto enough.
  13. Add another cup of broth once the first has been absorbed. Once most of the broth has been absorbed by the rice, add another cup.
  14. Repeat until the broth is gone or the rice is your desired consistency. The rice should be slightly firm and creamy, but never mushy.
  15. Repeat until the broth is gone or the rice is your desired consistency. The rice should be slightly firm and creamy, but not mushy.

Delicious and Versatile

You can add any extra ingredients that you would like to the mushroom risotto such as cheese, truffle oil, spices, or even meat to bulk it up into a main course. See how versatile it is?

You want things to be easy, right? Well, follow these tips from DealDash and you will be cooking in your beautiful, organized kitchen in no time!

Over-the-Sink Cutting Board

To give yourself more counter space and keep it clutter-free while you’re cooking be sure to pick up an-over-the sink cutting board. These cutting boards are like magic – they make the clean-up vanish! Just push all of the scraps off of the board directly into the dish disposal and presto! All clean!

Forget the Spice Rack

Forget the spice rack, get yourself some magnetized strips and mount them to your wall or side of the cabinet. Then get some round metal containers to put your spices into, and stick them onto the strips. It will save you counter space, cabinet space, and look very clean as well.

Speaking of Magnetized Strips

Speaking of magnetized strips, get another strip and mount it on your backsplash area to hold your cooking knives. This will save you some counter space because you won’t have to have a knife block out, and it will look very professional as well as keep the knives within quick grasp when you need them.

Hooks A-Plenty

If you’re wondering where you can store all of those tongs, soup ladles, spatulas, and others – hooks! Designate a place in your kitchen that you can install hooks, and hang up all of those pesky, hard to store cooking implements. You can even install the hooks on one side of the fridge if you get the ones that are made to be removable – they are made by “Command,” and they don’t leave a mess when you remove them. I love these hooks and use them for many things in my home. I can attest that they don’t leave damage when you remove them,

These hooks are awesome and I use them for many things in my home, and can attest that they don’t leave damage when you remove them, however if you are removing them from a painted wall you have to do it very slowly and carefully otherwise it will chip the paint.

DealDash Recipes: Baked Cheesy Macaroni

Image result for baked mac cheese

Kids and adults alike will enjoy this baked cheesy macaroni dish. It’s simple to make and delicious!

This baked cheesy macaroni is super-simple to make, and people love homemade macaroni and cheese. It is light years ahead of the boxed versions, and almost as inexpensive to make.

This baked cheesy macaroni has a powerful advantage for you: it is made with dry pasta, so there’s no need for precooking. Here’s a tip: the pasta cooks in the oven, absorbing the liquid from the dairy products. That’s a time-saver right there! Read on, and prepare for a delicious baked cheesy macaroni side dish for dinner tonight, compliments of DealDash.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup cottage cheese (not low fat, sorry healthy food lovers)
  • 2.5 cups milk (not skim, again, apologies)
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of grated nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 pound sharp or extra-sharp cheddar cheese, grated (Preferably use white cheddar, but orange will do.)
  • ½ pound elbow pasta, uncooked (see, this is the time-saver right here, folks)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees and position an oven rack in upper third of oven.
  2. Use 1 tablespoon butter to butter a 9-inch round or square baking pan.
  3. In a blender, purée cottage cheese, milk, mustard, cayenne, nutmeg and pepper together.
  4. Reserve ¼ cup grated cheese for topping. In a large bowl, combine remaining grated cheese, milk mixture and uncooked pasta. Pour into prepared pan, cover tightly with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  5. Uncover pan, stir gently, sprinkle with reserved cheese and dot with remaining tablespoon butter. Bake, uncovered, an additional 30 minutes, until browned.
  6. Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

This is such a delicious side dish, and it pairs well with just about any meat that you can imagine. I am planning on making this tonight with crispy baked chicken and garlic green beans on the side. Yummy, as well as kid-friendly, the perfect combination.

DealDash Makes Delicious Breakfast

dealdash makes breakfast

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Many people don’t have time to make breakfast in the morning. Here are some ideas from DealDash.

Not everyone has time to make a full breakfast every morning – or any morning for that matter! That doesn’t mean that you should skip breakfast, though! If you can manage to make a small breakfast you will have a much more productive day than if you skipped it. Here are some quick breakfast tips from DealDash for you to try.

Easy Smoothie

Blend frozen fruit (banana and berries work well) with Greek yogurt and your choice of milk or juice, and freeze overnight. You can then thaw throughout the day to enjoy in the afternoon or blend it up again in the morning.

Instant Oatmeal and Fruit

Change up your boring instant oatmeal in the morning with sliced fruit. You can use fresh fruit or frozen. If you are in too much of a hurry to slice the fruit you can always toss it in the blender on the “chop” setting and it will do all of the hard work for you.

Savory Oatmeal

Take oatmeal in a different direction by making it savory. Prepare as usual with milk or water, but add a pinch of salt and pepper instead of any cinnamon or sugar. Then top with an over-easy or poached egg and sprinkle on a little cheese if you’d like to take it up an extra notch.

Super Quick Eggs

If you like eggs but you’re in a hurry try a microwave coffee cup scramble. Coat a microwave-safe coffee cup with cooking spray. Add 2 eggs and 2 TBS milk, then beat with a fork until blended. Microwave on high for 45 seconds; stir. Microwave until eggs are almost set, about 45 seconds longer. Add toppings if you’d like – cheese, salt and pepper, onions, ketchup, etc. Take it to go!

Full Breakfast in a Hurry

Having a full breakfast would be optimal, though, and you can achieve that in a hurry with the Hamilton Beach Dual Breakfast Sandwich Maker. It’s easy to use the breakfast sandwich maker, simply choose your bread and layer on the fixings that you like such as egg, cheese, precooked meat or your choice of ingredients. Cook two breakfast sandwiches to perfection and to your preferences, and know when it’s ready with the built-in digital timer. In five minutes or less, two hot and delicious breakfast sandwiches are ready to serve. Does that sound delicious? You bet it does! Luckily DealDash carries the Hamilton Beach Dual Breakfast Sandwich Maker!

DealDash Examines Baby Food

DealDash Baby

Do you have a little baby that is going to be trying solids soon? DealDash is here to explain what some of your options are when choosing baby food.

Everyone has an opinion when it comes to your baby, and most people mean well when they try to give you advice. If you are unsure what you should be feeding your baby you should ask your baby’s doctor, first. You might end up feeling overwhelmed with all of the different options out there to choose from. Here are some ideas from DealDash.

Baby Cereal & Baby Oatmeal

Baby cereal and baby oatmeal are the first solids that a baby usually tries when they are ready to move beyond milk and formula. These foods are very similar, they come in a powder form that you can mix with milk, formula, or water. You can add more or less liquid to make them thin and soupy or thicker like regular oatmeal. When you first give these to your baby you will want to make them very thin and soupy and gradually thicken them up.

Rice Husk Baby Crackers

Baby crackers made of rice husks are also a very popular beginner food for your baby. When your baby is able to sit on their own they should be able to eat these crackers with supervision. These crackers melt when your baby gums them, and they can feel very soothing on their gums when they are teething.

Jarred Baby Food

Jarred baby food is usually the next step after your baby is comfortable with the baby cereal and baby oatmeal. Typically you would start with jars that are made of a single fruit or vegetable and move your way up to jars that have multiple fruits and veggies combined. That way you can see which ones your baby likes best, dislikes, and most importantly to see if your baby has an allergy to any of them.

Baby Food Pouches

Baby food pouches are becoming very popular, they are great for taking on-the-go because you can squirt them directly into your baby’s mouth instead of having to remember to bring a spoon. They are also great for babies that are a little older and can suck the food directly from the pouch themselves.

Cheerios

Cheerios are a beloved food of almost every baby, toddler, and kid. Plain Cheerios are a great snack food for your baby and are inexpensive and fun to eat. They are a safer food since they are small with a hole in the middle to prevent choking. Cheerios are great for babies that have a couple of teeth to chew with.

Homemade

Homemade baby food is the freshest and healthiest food available for your baby. Unfortunately, it takes quite a bit of time, effort, and clean up to make your own baby food. If you have time on a weekend, though, you can make large batches of baby food and freeze them in small batches to use throughout the week. If you’re interested in making your own baby food it’s fairly simple and all you really need is a food processor.

Quick Cleaning Ideas from DealDash

dealdash quick cleaning ideas

Cleaning doesn’t have to be a long drawn-out whole day extravaganza. Let DealDash show you some quick cleaning tips.

Many people leave cleaning just for the weekend, or in some people’s cases less often than that. DealDash is here to tell you that if you use some of these quick cleaning tips every day then you won’t ever have to do a huge clean-up. Your house will be mostly clean at all times. Use these ideas and your house will be company-ready at a moment’s notice.

Just 5 Minutes

Your house probably has some “hotspots” of clutter. Mine are the kitchen island where all of the mail gets tossed, near the front door where the kids take off their cold-weather gear, and a few other places. I like to set the timer on my phone for 5 minutes every day and clean one of these clutter hotspots. You’d really be surprised at how much you can really get done in 5 minutes of time per day.

Wipe That Counter

I like to keep a sponge next to all of the sinks in the house. Every time I use the sink I give the counter around it a quick wipe. This way your counter is cleaned every day, multiple times per day. We have 6 sinks in our house, so I try to use each of the sinks every day, or at least every other day so all of the counters stay sparkling clean.

Lightweight Mini Vacuums Rock!

I absolutely adore the lightweight mini vacuum that I got about 6 months ago. It has a rechargeable lithium battery, so I am cord-free. It also has a detachable dustbuster, which is very convenient. I do a quick vacuum around my entire first floor every day, and it’s completely effortless with this mini vacuum.

For some reason the simple fact that it doesn’t have a cord that I need to plug in and unplug multiple times to get the job done just makes it so much faster and I have zero dread when it comes to doing my daily vacuum. I keep a heavier Dyson upstairs where we have carpet. The house is so much easier to clean when you have the right tools to do the job!

DealDash Makes Snow Ice Cream

DealDash Snow Ice Cream

I can think of 3 good things about snow – snow days, snowmen, and snow ice cream.

Have you ever had snow ice cream? As someone who grew up in North Carolina, I had never even heard of it until I went on a trip to Ohio. I saw more snow during my 4 days in Ohio than I had seen in my whole 17 years of life. This was when I was introduced to the “snow slushy,” which was really just snow with 7-UP poured on top. Living in Massachusetts, my tastes have become a little more refined, hence the snow ice cream.

What is It?

Truthfully, it’s really not that much more difficult to make than the snow slushy, and requires only 5 basic ingredients. However, as with most ice creams, you can get as creative as you like with different ingredients. Here is the recipe for the basic snow ice cream.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (Keep this in the fridge for about an hour before use)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 8 cups clean snow

I cannot stress enough that this needs to be clean snow. My suggestion to you is to capture some fresh snow as it’s falling with a large mixing bowl. You can put this bowl somewhere on your porch, deck, or front steps, and keep an eye on it as it’s filling up with snow.

Directions:

  1. Using a large bowl, pour the milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt together and whisk. Make sure the bowl is large enough and made of light plastic to minimize any heat transfer.
  2. Measure out 8 cups of clean snow and mix it immediately with the vanilla milk mixture. Do this very quickly, and preferably outside since you don’t want the snow to melt.
  3. Mix until you have your desired consistency of ice cream. If you don’t want to eat it immediately, put it in the freezer to chill.

Really, it’s that easy. There are many other ingredients that you can mix in with the basic recipe to make even more exotic and delicious. Here are a few ideas:

  • Peppermint extract
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Chocolate cocoa mixture
  • Strawberry syrup or real strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Peanut butter
  • Marshmallow fluff

DealDash Bakes Delicious Bread

Image result for bake bread

Who doesn’t love fresh, hot from the oven baked bread? Baking bread doesn’t have to be difficult.

Now that the holidays are over and you have more time on your hands it’s time to expand your cooking horizons. Cook more from scratch than buying premade at the supermarket is a great way to know exactly what you’re putting into your body. Here’s a tip – it’s also a great way to save money, as cooking from scratch can be cheaper once you have purchased the basic ingredients, and can get many batches out of them. Now let’s bake some bread with DealDash!

White Bread Ingredients:

Makes 2 loaves

  • 2 teaspoons active-dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup milk – 2%, or skim is best for counting your calories
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 5 1/2 – 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

You also need a stand mixer, a large mixing bowl

Directions:

  • Pour the water into the bowl of a standing mixer or large mixing bowl and sprinkle the yeast over top. Let this stand for 5 minutes until the yeast is dissolved.
  • Melt the butter in the microwave, slowly stir in the milk, sugar, and salt.
  • Pour 1 cup of flour and the milk mixture over the yeast.
  • Stir with the stand mixer until this comes together in a texture similar to brownie batter
  • Add another 4 1/2 cups of flour, reserving the remaining cup if the dough is sticky during kneading.
  • Stir until a floury dough is formed.
  • Swap out the mixing attachment for the dough hook attachment on a standing mixer, then knead the dough for 8-10 minutes. If you don’t have a dough hook attachment for your stand mixer you can knead this dough by hand.
  • The dough is done when it feels smooth, slightly tacky, and can form a ball without sagging. If the dough is too sticky when mixing, you can add flour a tablespoon or so at a time until it’s tacky, not sticky.
  • Using another bowl, lightly coat the bowl with a little oil. Form the dough into a ball and rotate it in the bowl to coat the dough ball with oil.
  • Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm spot until doubled in bulk. This will take approximately one hour.
  • Sprinkle a little flour on your counter workspace and place the dough on it, dividing the dough in two and shape each into a loose ball. Let these rest on the counter for a few minutes.
  • Shape each ball of dough into a loaf, place them on pre-greased loaf pans. It’s important that the surface of the loaves be stretched taut; this helps them rise. Let the loaves rise a second time until they start to dome over the edge of the pan, this will take approximately minutes.
  • While your dough is rising, heat the oven to 425° F
  • Cut a line down the center of the tops of the loaves with a serrated knife and put them in the oven. Immediately turn down the heat to 375°F and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • Remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool completely before slicing.

I hope that you enjoy your home-baked bread! This bread is delicious and easy to make once you have done it a few times. If you need any items for your kitchen such as a stand mixer check DealDash. DealDash has everything for your kitchen including KitchenAid mixers. Visit DealDash Now.

DealDash Masters Cleaning Up

DealDash has some awesome cleaning ideas. Read on to learn some fun cleaning hacks.

Cleaning is boring and no fun, right? Wrong! When you read about new cleaning hacks online or in magazines, aren’t you excited to try them out? I know I am! Here are some cleaning hacks from DealDash that I have personally tried for myself and have had success.

Garbage disposal – Is your garbage disposal a little stinky? Or do you keep your garbage disposal sparkling clean with those expensive packs of round mystery chemicals from the store? Well, you don’t have to use expensive chemicals or have a stinky garbage disposal! Just take a lemon, cut it into quarters, and toss half into the disposal with some ice. Grind it up, and repeat with the other lemon half and more ice. Smell that lemony freshness?

Crusty pans – After cooking a delicious steak in the pan do you immediately scrub it? Probably not. By the time that you have eaten your delicious steak and come back to your pan, it’s a crusty mess. You can help prevent that crusty mess by putting hot water and a dryer sheet (yes, really!) into the pan and leaving it on the warm burner. When you come back to wash out the pan later on the crust will slide right off. Make sure that you wash it really well wish dish soap after, though, of course.

Speaking of dryer sheets, don’t throw away the ones that you have used in your dryer quite yet. They can still be useful in these ways:

  • Buff water spots from mirrors, bathroom/kitchen fixtures and shower doors
  • Remove the ring inside the toilet (don’t flush the dryer sheet, though)
  • Wipe baseboards clean

Dirty blender – The blender is easy to clean with this easy trick. Fill the blender 3/4 of the way full with warm water and a 1 small drop of dish soap. Turn it on and let it go for a for a few seconds. After, rinse it out with warm water, and voila, it’s clean!

Stinky couch – The couch is a little tricky to clean if you don’t have cushions with removable covers. To get the stink out, sprinkle baking soda on the cloth surfaces. If you have an old soft hairbrush, you can brush it in, and then let it sit for half an hour. After that, you can vacuum up the baking soda. It will eliminate most of the odors. If there are any lingering odors, lightly spray it with a solution of 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water solution and let it dry.

I hope that you have found these cleaning hacks helpful! If you have any of your own to add, please feel free to add them below in the comments section. This is definitely the season where it’s normal to have extra people at your house, whether it’s your cousins from out-of-state, or your neighbors from down the street. If they’re there, you’re going to need to feed them. What can you whip up that will feed multiple people? If you and your friends are on the healthier side, and nachos aren’t really your thing, you can prepare a delicious fruit salad instead. Even though the nachos were easy, the fruit salad is even easier. One of the best things about fruit salad is that there are no rules. You can combine just about any type of fruit that you would like, cut into small pieces, toss it together, and call it a fruit salad. Here are some ideas of what fruits to include in your fruit salad:

  • watermelon
  • honeydew melon
  • grapes
  • pineapple
  • apple
  • pomegranate seeds
  • orange segments
  • kiwi
  • blackberries
  • raspberries
  • blueberries

After you have made your fruit salad, you can keep it looking fresh for longer if you give a quick squeeze of lemon juice all over the top. Delicious! You can also make a sauce for this fruit salad by combining orange juice, a teaspoon of vanilla, a squeeze of lemon, just a dash of cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Put all of the sauce ingredients in a saucepan, and let simmer for about 5 minutes. Let it cool, and then pour it over the fruit salad. I personally don’t think that it needs a sauce, but if you would like to jazz it up, try the sauce!

DealDash Makes: Nut Butters

Image result for nut butters

Most people in the world have eaten peanut butter, but are completely unaware that there are many other types of nut butters.

If you’re sensitive to peanuts, you might want to try a different type of nut butter, under a doctor’s recommendation of course. You can try almond, cashew, macadamia, hazelnut, pecan, pistachio, or walnut. All of these nut butters have a few things in common such as a high fat and protein content.

The doctor might advise you not to try any of these nut butters if you are extremely sensitive to peanuts. But don’t despair! There are also “nut butters” that are made out of seeds instead, such as pumpkin seed butter, sesame seed butter, soynut butter, or sunflower seed butter. These nut butters are just as creamy and delicious as the original.

Making a nut butter is so simple that you don’t even need a recipe! Just take a food processor, toss your nut of choice in, and blend, blend, blend. You might have to blend for several minutes, and add a small amount of oil such as peanut, avocado, or grapeseed to speed the process along.

When you first begin blending the nuts in the food processor they will first be crumbly, then start to resemble a very rough-textured peanut butter, and if you keep blending it will eventually turn smooth and creamy. Please note, though, it will most likely not be quite as smooth as the commercial nut butters that you might buy at the supermarket or the health food store. After you have made your nut butter and put it in a container, try storing it upside down. All natural butters end up separating after a while. They are completely safe to eat after they have separated, it’s just easier to scoop and spread the nut butters if they are stored upside down.

If you’re wondering what to do with your nut butter once you have it, the answer is – many things! Other than making a NB&J sandwich, you can also use your nut butter as a dip for bananas or apples, you can put nut butter in your pancake batter, make sauces and dressings with them, and so much more. Anything that you do with peanut butter can be done with other nut butters.

DealDash Cooks: The Tomato

Image result for tomatos

Very few people dislike tomatoes, and they are a staple in many recipes. Let’s take a look at this delicious fruit.

Fruit!?! Yes, it’s true, the tomato is a fruit. The tomato is considered a fruit because it has seeds. So, technically speaking, cucumbers and pumpkins are also fruits! The tomato is typically considered a vegetable when cooking, though, because most of the dishes that use tomatoes are savory foods. However, if you are ever on a game show, or playing trivia at the bar with your friends and the question comes up – a tomato is definitely a fruit!

There are more than 7500 tomato varieties grown around the world, and tomatoes are grown pretty much everywhere, including colder climates where they are grown in greenhouses. You might be surprised to hear that China is the largest producer of tomatoes, accounting for approximately 25% of the world’s production. The United States is the second largest producer, and India takes third place in tomato production.

Tomatoes are not only delicious, but also very good for you. Tomatoes are packed full of lycopene, which is an antioxidant that is good for the heart and effective against certain cancers. Surprisingly, cooked tomatoes are actually better for you than raw ones, as more beneficial chemicals are released when the tomato is heated. Tomatoes are also chock full of healthy nutrients such as vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium.

If you love pizza (with tomato sauce of course!) then you might like to try some homemade sun-dried tomatoes on top of your next pizza. They are super easy to make, and so delicious.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Pounds of tomatoes
  • Salt to taste

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees F
  2. Wash and cut tomatoes in half. Gently squeeze out the seeds. Place the tomatoes on a non-stick cookie sheet, and sprinkle with salt to taste.
  3. Bake until tomatoes take on a leathery texture. This takes hours. I would say approximately 6-7 hours for larger pieces, if you use smaller pieces such as from Roma tomatoes, it will take less time.

If your kitchen is anything like mine, it’s overrun with apples lately! Here is a quick and easy apple pie recipe that is delicious and won’t take too much time to prepare.

Do you like apple pie? Who doesn’t? The best apple pie is homemade, of course, but who has hours to make dough, slice apples, and all of the other little chores that it takes to make a delicious homemade apple pie? Here is a quick and easy recipe that tastes just as good as a classic apple pie.

Ingredients:

1 Box Pillsbury™ refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box (This is the big shortcut – the crust!)

  • 8 Medium apples – peeled and thinly sliced (Another time-saving tip is to use the mandoline to slice your apples. That way it’s fast as well as completely uniform in thickness.
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch (less than 1/8 teaspoon) ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Place 1 pie crust in ungreased 9-inch glass pie plate. Press firmly against side and bottom.
  3. In large mixing bowl, mix filling ingredients
  4. Spoon ingredient mixture into crust-lined pie plate.
  5. Top with second crust, wrapping the excess top crust under bottom crust edge, pressing edges together to seal
  6. Firmly squeeze edges all around, then make small slices in the top crust to vent
  7. Bake 45 minutes, covering the outside edge of the crust with 3-inch wide strips of foil after first 20 minutes of baking to prevent excessive browning.
  8. Cool before serving.
  9. Enjoy!

Apple pie is perfect for anytime, but I especially love apple pie in the fall with apples picked fresh from the orchard. For a little added “zip” in your apple pies, try using Granny Smith apples for 1/2 of the 8 apples. This apple pie is so yummy that I always get requests for it when it’s bake sale time!

DealDash Roasts Pumpkin Seeds

Image result for pumpkin seeds

Since you are probably carving your pumpkins around this time, I figured it was time for a roasted pumpkin seed recipe.

Roasted pumpkin seeds are absolutely delicious, a healthy snack, and fun to make. What’s not to love? You can roast your pumpkin seeds with a basic recipe like the one below, or you can always get creative and add ingredients such as cinnamon and sugar, cayenne pepper, oil and vinegar, cocoa…The varieties are  practically endless! Basically, any kind of seasoning that you might add to chips would taste great on roasted pumpkin seeds. Now on to the recipe…

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 Cups raw pumpkin seeds, cleaned and dried
  • 2 Tbs melted butter
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees F
  2. Toss seeds in a bowl with the melted butter and salt.
  3. Spread the seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown; stir occasionally.

See, isn’t that simple?? These seeds make such a great base to add extra seasonings and flavors. You can also do a lot with these seeds after they have been roasted, such as:

  • Add the seeds as a topping for a salad instead of croutons
  • Add the seeds in a home-made trail mix with granola and dried fruit
  • Put them in tiny bags for your kid’s snack at school
  • Bring them with you when you’re out to avoid buying costly and fattening snacks
  • Bake them into cookies or brownies

I am in love with these roasted pumpkin seeds, and I look forward to carving the pumpkins with the kids every year so I can make these yummy roasted pumpkin seeds.

DealDash Makes Applesauce

Image result for applesauce

It’s apple picking season here in New England, and what better use of apples than applesauce?

Now that I have two kids in school I have received a bounty of freshly picked apples – pretty much every kid in school around here goes to apple picking at a local farm for a field trip at this time of year. Eating apples raw is delicious, of course, but it can get a little tiring after a while, and if you’re like myself the last ones in the bag go uneaten and get thrown away. Applesauce is the cure for your uneaten apple problem! It’s easy to make, delicious, and keeps for a while in the fridge after you have made it. It great for adults, kids, and even babies can eat it as well. It’s a wonderful high-fiber food that you can enjoy anytime, from breakfast to dessert. It’s time to learn how to make applesauce.

Ingredients:

  • 6 (approximately) of pounds Apples
  • 1 cup Apple Juice Or Water
  • Juice Of 1 Lemon
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar, Packed
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon, More Or Less To Taste

Directions:

  1. Peel and core Core the apples
  2. Cut Into slices – 8ths is great
  3. Combine all ingredients into a large stock pot and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 20-30 minutes.
  4. You can mash this up with a potato masher for a chunky applesauce or…
  5. Puree in a blender or food processor until it has reached the applesaucy texture that you desire.

Wasn’t that easy?? This is a great project to do at home with the kids that takes a minimum of time and effort and yields a delicious snack that you can all enjoy together when it’s done. Win Kitchen Gadgets on DealDash

DealDash is one of the best places around to get kitchen gadgets. Which kitchen gadgets are the most handy to have? Read on…

Even if you aren’t much of a cook, kitchen gadgets can still be very useful, and some of them are quite fun and whimsical. I personally enjoy trying out all of the newest kitchen gadgets, and whatever doesn’t make it into my “gadget rotation” I pass along to a friend, family member, or donate it to the local thrift shop. DealDash tends to have all of the newest and most popular gadgets for the kitchen, here are some of my favorites. If you get a chance to win one of these, you should!

Pie slicer/server – This simple little gadget is one of the hottest sellers on DealDash, and I predict that they will become even more popular next month for Thanksgiving. It not only cuts your pie into perfect slices, you can also pick up the pie by using the server like a pair of tongs. It has a simple, clean, elegant design.

Vacuum sealer – I wanted one of these food sealers for the longest time, and I was finally able to get one last week. It has lots of potential other than to just seal your food for the freezer; you can do sous vide cooking, you can infuse a marinade or season a steak and seal it in to marinate, or you can even use it for non-food uses such as waterproofing your camera if you are going on a boat and aren’t sure if you’re going to get splashed or not. I wouldn’t advise sealing your camera and then tossing in the water for fun, but sometimes accidents happen and you will be glad you waterproofed it if you happen to get wet.

Foodsaver Vacuum Sealing System V3860

Oil-less fryer – I am so excited to try an oil-less fryer. I haven’t been able to snag one yet, but I have been yearning to get one lately! I have looked at them online and in the store, and they look amazing. Who wouldn’t want to eat fried chicken or french fries with significantly less fat and calories due to the oil-less nature of this gadget?

DealDash Recipes: Autumnal Beef Stew

Image result for beef stew

As the weather is cooling slightly, it’s a wonderful time to start thinking about fall recipes. Beef stew is one of my favorites.

There is just something to me that says “Winter is coming” with a big hearty bowl of beef stew. It’s delicious, has healthy ingredients, and you can even make a huge batch of it, and freeze it for later use for a night that you don’t feel like cooking this upcoming winter. Pairing beef stew with a delicious home-baked (yes, buying frozen dough and baking it counts as home-baked!) bread makes the perfect meal for a long, chilly night with your family.

Autumnal Beef Stew

Ingredients:

  • 2 LBS stew beef cut into cubes or small chunks
  • 10 small red potatoes cut into quarters
  • 1 LB baby carrots
  • 1 large red onion, cut into small chunks
  • 1/2 a stick of butter
  • 1 TBS flour
  • 1 Cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tsp each of: salt, dried parsley flakes, & garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp each of: pepper, celery seed, & dried thyme

Directions:

  1. Place potatoes, carrots and onions in a 5+ quart crock pot/slow cooker
  2. brown your beef cubes in a pan with the butter
  3. After browning beef, add to slow cooker
  4. Stir flour into the beefy pan drippings until mixed, then cook and stir until browned
  5. Add the water, then bring to a boil and cook while stirring for approximately 2 minutes or until thickened
  6. Add in all of your dry ingredients to the pan drippings, mix, then pour over beef in the slow cooker
  7. Cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours
  8. Serve with crispy buttered bread
  9. Enjoy!

Beef stew is the quintessential dinner for a chilly winter’s day. It can fill you up with its hearty goodness, and make you feel warm and comfortable even in the midst of a winter snowstorm. It’s easy to make, and delicious to eat. Even picky children usually like this beef stew, even if they end up picking out the onions!

If you want to make this recipe you must have a slow cooker. If you don’t have a slow cooker, DealDash has auctions for slow cookers quite frequently. DealDash can offer you a great deal on a slow cooker, and you can have fun bidding, as well. Just click this link here and it will take you to DealDash. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Cooks: Boba (Bubble) Tea

Image result for bubble tea

Bubble Tea is one of my favorite drinks. I crave it. Luckily, it’s easy to make at home.

Bubble tea is originally from Taiwan, it was created in the 1980s. Eventually it’s popularity spread throughout Asia, then across the world. My favorite bubble tea is the type with boba tapioca pearls, but bubble tea can also be made with small cubes of jelly, or you can even just make the regular Thai iced tea without any sort of bubbles.

You can add the boba bubbles to just about any drink, but they are typically added to either Thai iced tea or any number of different fruity-type drinks. Some of my favorites are mango and grapefruit, but they are all delicious. Here is a quick and easy recipe to get you started. After you have mastered this recipe, then branch out to different types of bubble drinks. Just a hint, though, if you’re not sure if it will taste good with the boba added, then just mix up a very small amount, enough for just a couple of sips. Otherwise you might waste your precious, precious boba!

Thai Iced Tea

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup dried boba tapioca pearls per serving (NOT quick-cooking boba)
  • 2 tea bags, any kind, though I prefer black tea
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Ice

Directions:

  1. Bring 2 Cups of water to a boil over high heat. Add 1/4 Cup of boba and lightly stir until they start floating to the top of the water.
  2. Reduce heat to medium and simmer the boba for 14 minutes. Remove the pan from the burner, cover, and let the boba sit for another 14 minutes.
  3. If you are planning on eating/serving them all in one sitting you can skip this step. While the boba are simmering, make a sugar syrup to sweeten and preserve them after cooking. Bring a 1/2 Cup of water to a boil over high heat. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup sugar until dissolved. Set aside to cool.
  4. Make a cup of strong tea, then let cool.
  5. After the boba have cooked, drain the water off. Let cool until boba are room temperature, at least 15 minutes, or refrigerate until ready to use. Boba are best if used within a few hours of cooking, but will keep refrigerated for several days. If you plan on keeping these boba for a few days, please refrigerate them in the sugar syrup in Step #3.
  6. Pour the prepared tea over ice into a glass and add the boba as well as the sweetened condensed milk.
  7. Enjoy!

DealDash Cooks: Sweet Potato Fries

Image result for sweet potato fries Sweet potato fries that are made in the oven taste great and are a lot healthier for you than regular fries. Luckily, they are easy to make as well.

Have you ever had sweet potato fries? I first tried them a few years ago, and I was hooked. When I learned how easy and quick they are to make at home they became a regular staple around our house. Here is a fast recipe, but of course you can add any other seasoning that you would like to them such as truffle oil, Himalayan salt, etc.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large or 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 2 teaspoons canola oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450 °F
  2. Peel your potato and cut into thick wedges
  3. Toss sweet potato wedges with oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Spread the wedges out on a baking sheet that’s been lightly sprayed with oil/Pam
  5. Bake for 10 minutes
  6. Turn, bake an additional 10 minutes or until browned

Wasn’t that simple? If you would like to get even more creative, you can make “fancy” ketchup to go with your own fries. If you would like to make a spicy ketchup you can add in a little Sirracha sauce, or you can even dip these in BBQ sauce or ranch dressing.

Sweet potatoes are extremely versatile, and are loved by a huge portion of the population. People love them for a good reason,  sweet potatoes have vitamin A and they are delicious! What’s not to love?

If you would like your sweet potato fries to be crispier, cut them into thinner strips instead of the big wedges, and try cooking them on top of a baking rack instead of on a baking sheet.

I hope that you enjoyed this article, and that you make your own sweet potato oven fries soon. My kids love them, and I’m sure that you will, too. Bento Lessons with DealDash

Image result for bento

Now that the kids are back in school and I need to make lunches for two kids daily instead of one, I thought it would be fun to explore some “easy” bento designs.

Are you familiar with the concept of “bento”? If you were to look up the definition in the dictionary it would say “Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice, fish or meat, with pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container.” However, to many moms (and some dads) bento is more than that – bento is an art project and an expression of love all in one cute little delicious package.

Bento designs can range from something fairly simple, such as the design above with two little steamed buns atop a pile of noodles to represent little birdies in a nest. It’s adorable, and in this particular case only adds an extra 5-10 minutes of prep time to make the little faces and arrange the ingredients nicely.

Creative Bento (Japanese Lunch) Boxes

On the other end of the spectrum there are the extremely detailed and difficult to make bento as shown in the picture above. If you take each little character separately it shouldn’t be impossible to re-create, but it would take a very long time.

You don’t need any special supplies to make the more simple bento designs, just a sharp knife, a lunch box that is meant to be carried flat, and some patience. However, if you want to do the more detailed and artistic bentos, then you should probably invest in some of the rice molds and food-grade hole punches to make designs.

If your kids like the idea of taking bento boxes to school for lunches, it could save you some time and be a fun project to get them to help you with some of the preparation and designs the night before, so you just have to assemble the bento design in the morning before school.

Since you’re going to need a sharp knife, how about checking out the cutlery auctions on DealDash? DealDash has many different types of knives, as well as a huge assortment of other cooking implements. DealDash Makes: Home Made Energy Drinks

Image result for energy drinks

If you’re the kind of person who loves energy drinks, I’m sure that you realize that they are quite bad for your health.

Here are a few alternatives for you to get the energy you crave from a drink, without all of the chemicals that are terrible for you. They might not have fancy cans with fun designs, but they are better for your health, and taste great, too!

Lemon-Honey Energy

Ingredients:

  • hot water
  • 1 1/2 – 2 tsp honey (to taste)
  • Juice from 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger root
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp tumeric

Directions:

  • Using a garlic press, squeeze the juices from the ginger into your cup. You might find it easier to slice the ginger into a few pieces and squeeze each of them into the cup.
  • Squeeze the lemon into your cup as well
  • Add in your spices.
  • Fill your cup with hot water
  • Add in honey until you are satisfied with the taste
  • You can either drink this hot, or chill it in the fridge.

The reason that this drink can give you energy is because each of the ingredients has a job to do – The lemon is important because it has an alkaline forming effect on your body that can help your body maintain a healthy pH level, which is critical for staying on top of your game. Ginger speeds up metabolism, tastes great, and even helps with nausea. Tumeric speeds up metabolism as well as energy levels. Cardamom is known to increase circulation and improve energy. And finally, honey is a delicious sugar that is good for your body, and can also provide you with energy.

  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 5 mint leaves

DealDash Cooks: Zucchini Noodles

Image result for zucchini noodles

Veggie spiral slicers have been all the rage this past summer, and making zucchini noodle “pasta” has never been easier. Here is a delicious recipe for Zucchini “Pasta” with meatballs.

I never thought that I would be a supporter of zucchini pasta, but here we are in 2016, and I am here to say that it’s pretty good! If you are trying to get healthier and are counting carbs, then zucchini pasta is the way to go. It’s significantly easier to make zucchini pasta with a spiral veggie cutter than making it by hand, but you can use whichever method that you feel comfortable with. And FYI, those spiral veggie cutters are very affordably gotten at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Don’t forget to use your 20% off coupon that you can find on their website, as well as using a Bed, Bath, and Beyond gift card from DealDash!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground beef (I like the 97/3, but use whatever you like)
  • 1/4 Cup Italian seasoned dry breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 Cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1 Cup Provolone cheese, grated
  • 10 grape (or cherry) tomatoes sliced in half
  • 2 garlic cloves, cleaned and minced
  • 2 Tbs extra-virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1 jar tomato pasta sauce (I like Ragu Super Chunky Mushroom, myself)
  • 1 can mushrooms (drained)
  • 4 medium zucchini, cut into noodles
  • Salt and Pepper

Directions:

  1. Combine beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan, approximately 1 garlic clove, and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper in a bowl. Form into 12 –  2″) beef meatballs.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add beef meatballs and cook, turning occasionally, until brown on all sides, approximately 5 minutes.
  3. Reduce heat to medium-low and gently stir in pasta sauce and mushrooms. Simmer, turning meatballs occasionally, until meatballs are cooked through, approximately 15 minutes.
  4. While sauce is simmering, heat 1 Tbs oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add zucchini noodles, tomatoes, and remaining minced garlic and cook until just tender, approximately 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve meatballs over noodles topped with Provolone and Parmesan cheese.

Yum, yum, yum! I am getting hungry just thinking about it. You can also add a nice side salad with Italian dressing to this, and make it a great meal. You can get some great new kitchen items from DealDash, as well as Bed, Bath, and Beyond gift cards. Simply visit DealDash at this link. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Debunks Cleaning Myths

Image result for cleaning confused

There are lots of “old wives tales” that relate to cleaning, but some of them are not true, and not only that, some of them can actually make things worse. Let’s take a look…

There are many myths floating around about cleaning that have been passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter to friend, etc. Sadly, not all of these cleaning tips are correct. Some of them even cause more work for you. Here are a few cleaning myths, and what you can do instead to make your home cleaner and your life a little easier.

  • Myth 1 – Vinegar cleans and disinfect everything. This is a myth that I have believed in for pretty much my whole life. Unfortunately, unless you use straight vinegar out of the bottle it doesn’t really have the cleaning and anti-bacterial properties that you thought that it had. If you are using just a cup of vinegar to 5 cups of water in a bucket, then you really aren’t cleaning as well as you thought that you were. You can definitely still use vinegar as a cleaner, but you need to use it full-strength. I keep a bottle of straight vinegar under my kitchen cabinet, and deal with the smell when I use it. However, please don’t use it on wood or stone – it can actually damage the surface. For wood and stone, please use the appropriately labeled cleaner for the job.
  • Myth 2 – Use newspaper to clean your windows. No, don’t. The newspaper can get soaked and leave small pieces behind, and sometimes the ink can transfer onto your windows or sills. Not only that, but the ink will definitely get on your hands, and personally, I dislike the smell of wet newspaper. Instead of newspaper, you can use microfiber cloth for the best results, or you can use a regular washcloth, or a disposable shop towel or paper towel.
  • Myth 3 – Hand washing is cheaper and better for the environment. Not so – hand washing your dishes actually takes more water (about 5,000 gallons per year more) and it doesn’t really get your dishes any cleaner. In fact, the dishwasher gets the dishes much cleaner because the dishwasher uses a much higher temperature and actually sanitizes them instead of just cleaning off the food.

I hope that you found this article helpful. DealDash has many cleaning supplies that you can use in your everyday cleaning. Why not bid on them on DealDash? DealDash Recipes: Baked Potato Chips

Who doesn’t love potato chips? Salty, crispy, potato-y goodness abounds! Unfortunately, traditional potato chips are full of fat, oils, and calories. Here’s a recipe for baked potato chips that is much lighter than the original.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Russet potatoes
  • 1 Tbs olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven – 400 degrees is just right
  • Scrub the potatoes completely, rinse, and pat dry. Using an extremely sharp knife, Slice the potatoes very thin (about 1/8″ or thinner.)
  • Place potato slices in a large bowl and toss well until coated with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  • Arrange the seasoned potato slices in a single layer on a cooling rack placed on top of a baking sheet to allow even cooking on both sides of the potato slices. If you don’t have a cooling rack, then line your baking pan with parchment paper, and flip them after 10 minutes. Bake for 18 to 25 minutes until the potato slices are browned and crisp. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. They are best served soon after.
  • You may season them again with salt and pepper while they are cooling.

If you would like to try different flavors, here are a few ideas:

Salt and Vinegar – After thinly slicing the potatoes, place them in a large bowl filled with vinegar, and set aside for a least 2 hours. Please note, the longer they soak, the more vinegary the flavor. Drain potato slices and toss with oil and salt.

BBQ – BBQ chips are easy! Just substitute 2 Tbs of BBQ seasoning in place of the pepper when you are seasoning the chips.

These chips are delicious to eat, and fun to make! If you were feeling very industrious, it would be easy to double, triple, or even quadruple the recipe to make a large amount of chips for a party.

This recipe calls for a very sharp knife. If your knives are less than sharp lately, why not get a new knife on DealDash? DealDash has all of the latest knives and cooking accessories. Just check out the Kitchen and Dining category at this link right here and see how much you can save. Good luck and happy bidding!

DealDash Cooks: Kid’s Snacks

Kids love to snack between meals, but sometimes the easiest snack food is just not healthy. Here are some fast and fun snacks kids will love.

No matter if your kids are tiny or big, they all love to snack! Some of my kids favorite snacks are fruit snacks, chips, and other unhealthy things. To try to combat the unhealthy snacks I try to make healthier choices for them with an element of fun. Here are a few ideas for some healthy kid’s snacks.

Grape Dolphin – As you can see in the picture above, the Grape Dolphin is super simple to make. Take a banana and cut it in half horizontally. Take the half of the banana with the stem and cut the stem vertically. Stick a grape into the “mouth” that you made. Stick it in a small bowl. Scatter grapes around your dolphin. Enjoy. Please remember, if you have kids 3 or younger to cut all of the grapes in half vertically to help prevent choking.

Frozen Yogurt Drops – Take any flavor of Greek yogurt and put into a ziplock bag. Slice off one corner of the bag and squeeze out into quarter sized drops onto a cookie sheet covered in parchment paper. Freeze for about 2 hours. Store in a tupperware container in the freezer until ready to use. These can be kept in the freezer until the original expiration date. These are a delicious ice cream-like treat that is good for you – especially if you use the zero fat type of Greek yogurt.

Strawberry Ladybugs – These are definitely a cute treat for kids – they even have chocolate! To make them just cut strawberries lengthwise, insert a few chocolate chips, and arrange on a plate with a blueberry at the top for a head. Please see the picture below:

As you can see, you can have a lot of fun with your kid’s snacks and be healthy at the same time. Most of these treats need a sharp knife to prepare. If you need a new sharp kitchen knife be sure to check out DealDash’s Kitchen and Dining category located at this link right here. In that DealDash category you will find a great selection of wonderful sharp kitchen knives. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Helps: Tiny Calorie Swaps

Most of us Americans could stand to lose a few pounds. Here are some handy tips on how to reduce your calories by making tiny lifestyle changes.

Are you a little overweight? Could you stand to lose just a few pounds? I know I could! Here are a few of the sneaky little ways that I have discovered to cut a few calories here and there throughout the day. If you save 10 calories here, and 20 calories there it doesn’t take long to add up to a fairly significant savings by the end of the day.

Swap your plate. If you’re eating dinner on a large 12″ size plate swap it out for a 10″ sized one. Most people just automatically fill their plate with food, so filling in 10″ versus 12″ is a savings in calories.

Ditch the soda habit. A 12-ounce soft drink has about 150 to 180 calories. If you down two or three a day, you’re getting lots of extra calories. If the main reason that you like drinking soda is the carbonation, try drinking seltzer water instead. If plain seltzer water isn’t you thing, you can add some orange or cranberry juice to make a delicious drink. It’s more calories than the plan seltzer, but less than a can of regular soda.

Eat what you like…With a friend. Do you love ice cream? How about cheesecake? Fudge? Me too! The easiest way to save half of the calories on delicious desserts is to share them with a friend. When I go out to dinner with my husband we almost always order 1 dessert and share it. He doesn’t really care for sweets, and I don’t care to eat 1,000 calories in one sitting on a piece of cheesecake.

Switch to skim. Skim milk, that is. If you enjoy milk in your cereal, milk in your coffee, or even just a glass of cold milk then stop buying whole milk and start buying skim milk. If the change is to abrupt for you, then step it down by choosing 2%, 1%, then skim.

Eat popcorn instead of chips. If you swap out your greasy, salty chips for some fat-free popcorn you have saved lots of calories. If you switch to air popped you will save even more. Popcorn is delicious, addicting, and almost guilt free.

Make it with mustard instead of mayo. If you love to make sandwiches or chicken salad or tuna, skip the mayo and try using some delicious stone ground mustard instead. If that is too extreme for you try using a 2:1 ratio of mustard to mayo. You will still save calories and it will be even more delicious.

I hope that this article has got you thinking about some small ways to cut calories without disrupting your lifestyle too much. DealDash Feeds the Baby

As the mom of a 6 month old I am just starting to feed him baby food. It’s the messiest!

I am working on some ways to help keep the mess to a minimum. The first one is to stop using baby wipes on his face and hands! They just don’t work that well, smearing the food around rather than wiping it off. I bought some good quality bamboo baby wash cloths and use those during mealtimes instead. It seemed that the baby wipes were irritating his skin, and it’s much better since switching to the wash cloths.

A good high chair is helpful for trying to keep the mess at bay. The Graco DuoDiner 1 High Chair (pictured below) is great because the seat pad is wipeable or machine washable, depending on how messy that particular meal was. I was surprised to find that not all high chair pads are machine washable! Speaking of cleaning, the dishwasher-safe, pull-out insert makes clean up hassle-free. I personally try to just wipe everything down as soon as I’m done feeding the baby so nothing gets all caked on and yucky. The insert makes it quick and easy. If you’d like to check out the DuoDiner 1 High Chair on DealDash the link is right here.

Graco Childrens Products DuoDiner LX 3-in-1 High Chair

Another thing I would like to do is to start making my own baby food. It might not make things less messy, but at least I would know exactly what I was cleaning up! I’ve never tried to make baby food before, but from doing some reading it seems that you just need a food processor. DealDash has a good selection of food processors that would be perfect for making baby food. They have cheaper ones such as Ninja Master Prep, which is less expensive because it’s quite small – but it would be the perfect size to make baby food! If you’d like a more high-end food processor DealDash also has the KitchenAid KFP0922CU food processor which will slice and dice anything that you throw into it. Regardless of which food processor you pick rest assured that the baby food that you make at home will be tastier and more healthy due to the fresh fruits and veggies that you use to make your little darling’s meals.

Babyhood is such a fleeting thing, I can’t believe that my baby is just about halfway done being a baby and will be moving on to toddlerhood soon. Give your kids a hug, everyone, and then check out DealDash. DealDash has lots of items for babies, kids, and even teenagers in the Hobbies, Toys, Outdoors, and Games category. DealDash loves kids! DealDash Cooks: Great Food for Cheap

Everyone wants to eat fresh and healthy foods, but sometimes that can be difficult to do on a tight budget. Here are some tips and tricks to stretch your food budget while staying healthy.

Cooking fresh and healthy foods can be very expensive. However, most people, especially those with small kids to feed want to cook as healthily as possible. Sometimes cuts of lean meat and buying fresh fruits and veggies instead of canned ones can almost double your grocery bill. Luckily, there are ways to stretch that budget and make great healthy choices as well.

One great way to save money and boost your health as well is to use less meat in your cooking. Meat is usually the most expensive item on the menu, so if you are able to cut the portions of meat in your cooking by half then you will be able to save quite a bit of money.

Depending on what you are cooking it’s easy to substitute half of the meat that is called for in a recipe with beans, such as when you are making chili, stews, or even skillet dinners. If you like to make stir fry, take out half of the chicken that you would normally use and put in a block of tofu instead. Tofu has no taste, it takes on the flavors of what it’s cooked with. If you are making a stir fry and using seasonings such as garlic and soy sauce, that’s exactly what your tofu will taste like.

Another great way to save money, be healthy, and have some fun as well is to have breakfast for dinner! Breakfast foods such as eggs, wheat toast, unsweetened cereals (such as Cheerios), orange juice, and milk are all healthy and relatively inexpensive. Last year when there was a shortage of eggs this wouldn’t have been a good idea, but now my local supermarket always has a dozen eggs for .99! Kids always love to have breakfast for dinner. For added fun, let them change into their PJs for dinner!

My last suggestion to you today is instead of buying fresh seafood at the seafood counter go ahead and buy frozen seafood. Frozen seafood is put on ice and frozen immediately after being caught, so it tastes just as fresh as “fresh” seafood from the fish counter, and it’s almost always significantly cheaper.

I hope that these tips were helpful for you in thinking about how to cook and eat healthy foods on a budget. If you’re in need of anything for the kitchen or the home be sure to check out DealDash. They have everything you can possibly need, from kitchen implements to massage chairs! Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Cooks: Chicken With Egg Noodles

Slow cookers are usually associated with cold weather foods like stews and pot roast, but here’s a delicious meal that’s just perfect for any kind of weather.

I always hate putting away my slow cooker for the spring and summer seasons. Slow cookers make life so much easier by helping you make delicious home cooked meals without spending too much of your valuable time in the kitchen. I’m always on the lookout for recipes that allow me to use my slow cooker for a seasonally appropriate meal.

Below is a delicious recipe that has become a staple in my household in any season. Even the pickiest kid will eat it, and that’s saying something!

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz. egg noodles
  • 1 pound of chicken legs and thighs, skin removed
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 4 slice thick-cut bacon (about 6 ounces)
  • 1/2 c. dry white wine
  • 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tbsp. tomato paste
  • salt & pepper (to taste)
  • 3 medium carrots, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup frozen pearl onions
  • 3 clove garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 stalks celery cut into 2-inch pieces

Directions:

  1. Microwave the bacon between sheets of paper towels until cooked through, then cut into 2 inch pieces. If your family loves bacon then double the amount.
  2. Using your slow cooker, combine the wine, flour, tomato paste, salt (to taste), and pepper (to taste). Then using a whisk add in the chicken broth. Next, add the celery, carrots, onions, garlic, and bacon. Whisk until combined.
  3. Place the chicken in the slow cooker, meat (not bone) side down. Cook in the slow cooker approximately 3 to 4 hours on high or 5 to 6 hours on low.
  4. Just before dinner, cook the bag of egg noodles in salted boiling water until al dente. Transfer 1/4 cup cooking water to a skillet. Stir in olive oil, a squeeze of lemon juice, and salt and pepper (to taste).
  5. Serve chicken and veggies on top of the egg noodles.

This meal should only take about 30 minutes to prep, and then it can cook while you are at work, running errands, or bidding on DealDash all day! This is a wonderful meal that can be paired with a Pinot Grigio wine if desired.

DealDash Cooks: Apple Crisp

Apples are America’s favorite fruit, and while they are awesome by themselves they are even better when baked into an apple crisp!

Did you know that 2,500 varieties of apples are grown in the US alone? Even more amazing than that, 7,500 varieties of apples are grown around the world. That’s a big difference from the choice of Granny Smith’s, Red & Golden Delicious, and Gala apples that are available in your local supermarket. Apples are grown in all 50 states, however, so no matter where you are in the US you should always be able to buy apples. Other than just eating them apples have lots of different uses such as making baby food, juice, apple sauce, apple butter or jelly and vinegar.

In my opinion, though, none of those uses are quite as delicious as making your apples into an apple crisp! Making an apple crisp is simple and fairly quick, please read on below for the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 6 Gala apples (peeled, cored, and sliced up)
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon & 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (separated)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold butter

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Mix apples with white sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl to coat; out into a 9-inch square baking dish
  • Mix brown sugar, oats, flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in another bowl. Use a potato masher or 2 forks to mash cold butter into the oats mixture until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs; spread over the apples to the edges of the baking dish. Pat the top gently until evenly coated.
  • Bake in preheated oven until golden brown and sides are bubbling, about 40 minutes.

That’s it! Once that bad boy comes out of the oven serve it up warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Yum yum! Everyone I’ve ever served my apple crisp to has enjoyed it — or they are all really good at faking it!

If you are in need of any of the supplies mentioned in the recipe, such as measuring cups, measuring spoons, cutting boards, a baking dish, or a new set of kitchen knives to slice up the apples you should definitely check out DealDash. DealDash has all of these kitchen items and so much more to explore and bid on. You can check out DealDash’s Kitchen and Dining category located at this link right here. DealDash Recipes: Homestyle Meatloaf

My kids might not agree, but I think that meatloaf is delicious! I am definitely not the best cook that I have ever met, but I have to brag a little when I say that my meatloaf is delightful.

Now that we are into the full swing of summer a lot of the local supermarkets around me are having really great sales on ground beef assuming that people are going to buy it to grill hamburgers. It’s only July and I am already a little tired of burgers. Let’s take that ground beef and turn it into yummy meatloaf.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 pounds of ground beef (or turkey, or pork, or a combination)
  • 1 slice of stale (or lightly toasted) bread very finely chopped into breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 very small white or yellow onion, chopped finely
  • 5 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/3 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup of milk

Directions:

  • Combine all meat loaf ingredients
  • Form into loaf shape
  • Place into a loaf baking dish
  • Bake at 350 for 60-80 minutes, until done

Some people like to add additional ketchup to the top of the meatloaf for the final 15 minutes of baking. You can do this, or you can make a simple sauce to serve on top of the meatloaf when it’s served. You can make a sauce out of 3 Tablespoons brown sugar, 3 Tablespoons  apple cider vinegar, and 1/2 cup ketchup. Delicious!

This Homestyle Meatloaf recipe should serve about 4 adults, but if you are having a family dinner with the grandparents or the aunts and uncles it’s a very easy recipe to double and make two separate loaves and bake them at the same time. This Homestyle Meatloaf also goes wonderfully with homemade mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. Yum yum!

If you are in need of any of the supplies mentioned in the recipe, such as measuring cups, measuring spoons, a baking dish, or a new set of kitchen knives you should check out DealDash. DealDash has all of these kitchen items and so much more to explore and bid on. You can check out DealDash’s Kitchen and Dining category located at this link right here. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Dinner as a Family

Most people would agree that eating dinner as a family is important. However, with today’s busy schedules it’s hard to find the time.

With all of the soccer games, one or both parents working late, and tons of homework it’s hard to eat dinner together. However, since it’s important you and your family should schedule family dinner on your calendars at least once per week, but preferably more. Write it in on the calendar just as you would any other appointment, and stick to it!

Preparing dinner, setting the table, and cleaning up after dinner should not be left for one person to do. Ideally everyone would work together to prepare dinner, set things up, and clear it all away and wash the dishes. Or if your family is planning on doing regular weekly family dinners then it might make more sense for you to pick one or two people to be responsible for everything one week, and then swap the next week. The way to get everyone involved would be to pair an adult or teenager with a younger family member so everyone can get used to all of the work that goes into preparing dinner for everyone. After all, they will have their own families to take care of one day.

Finally, when the dinner is on everyone’s plates don’t just eat and ignore each other, share your day. Ask questions about other family member’s days. Discuss future plans together, brainstorm answers to problems, get to know what’s going on in each other’s lives. Children and teenagers who feel like their parents really listen to them are less likely to get into trouble because they want their parents to be proud of them, they don’t want to be a disappointment. It’s important, trust me.

DealDash Saves on Entertainment

If you’re like a lot of families you are probably spending too much money on entertainment. Let DealDash help reduce your expenses.

One of the biggest expenses that can go under the “entertainment” category is going out to restaurants for dinner. Most items that you get from a restaurant you can easily make at home for significantly less money, you can make them healthier, and cooking with your family can be considered a form of entertainment as well. If you need some new kitchen items be sure to check out DealDash’s Kitchen and Dining category.

Another big entertainment expense for families is video games. New video games can cost upwards of $40, $50, or even $60. Add the big price tag to the fact that once you have beaten said game you will probably never play it again, it’s a big expense. You can cut the costs of video games for your family in a few different ways. You can only buy used or older games, you can use one of the game rental services, or of course you can bid on video games on DealDash! Just check out this link right here to be taken to the video games on DealDash.

If you have kids, especially school-aged kids, you’re probably going to hear a chorus of “I’m borredddd, I’m borreeddd, why are things different???!” The thing that you’re going to have to do to counteract that is to pack their schedules full of activities. These activities don’t have to be expensive, or cost any money at all. You can consider doing some good for your community while entertaining your kids by volunteering. As someone who used to volunteer at an animal shelter, I can attest to the fact that people can (and do) bring their school-aged kids in to volunteer. There are plenty of things that older kids can do to volunteer at an animal shelter such as brushing dogs, feeding and watering the animals, and taking the dogs for walks.

Another fun thing to do with the kids that my family loves to do is going to pick fresh fruit at the local orchards and farms. While it does cost money it’s money that you would be spending at the supermarket anyway, and you get the added benefit of entertaining your family.

In case you didn’t know, DealDash is commonly referred to as “Entertainment Shopping,” meaning that you are buying things online but you are getting the benefit of having fun while you are shopping. DealDash can be called entertainment shopping because even if you don’t win the auction you can always BIN (Buy It Now) the item for retail value and get all of your bids back as well as free shipping. Go entertain yourself now on DealDash and see how much you can save. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Cooks: Slow BBQ Chicken

Originally hailing from the South, I love BBQ! If it’s too hot in your kitchen this summer to cook, just use the slow cooker.

When you say Southern BBQ most people automatically think about pork. However, chicken can also make an awesomely delicious BBQ sandwich. The slow cooker is perfect for cooking BBQ, as the key cooking phrase of anyone versed in BBQ is “Low and Slow”, which is exactly what the slow cooker does.

Here is the recipe for cooking delicious slow cooker BBQ chicken, and also some dessert ideas.

Ingredients

  • 4 Boneless/skinless chicken breast halves
  • 1 (18 Ounce) bottle of BBQ sauce (I like Sweet Baby Ray’s or Stubbs, personally)
  • 1/4 Cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 Cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon red pepper flakes (if desired)

Directions

  • Whisk BBQ sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes together in a bowl until the sugar dissolves
  • Put chicken breast halves in a slow cooker.
  • Pour sauce mixture over the chicken.
  • Cook on Low for approximately 6 hours.
  • Shred the chicken breasts with 2 forks
  • Serve on buns

As for dessert my family always liked to pair an ambrosia with BBQ. Here is a quick and easy Pink Ambrosia recipe:

Ingredients

Directions

  • Mix sweetened condensed milk, whipped topping, and vanilla extract together in a bowl
  • Fold cherry pie filling, pineapple, fruit cocktail, coconut, walnuts, and mini-marshmallows into the condensed milk mixture
  • Cover bowl and refrigerate overnight
  • Mix very well before serving

DealDash Cooks: Favorite Cold Drinks

As much as I love hot tea and coffee in the winter the summer has an amazing drink selection as well. Here are a few recipes for delicious drinks your family will love.

Vietnamese Sparkling Limeade – This is definitely my top pick for drink of the summer season. It’s delicious, refreshing, and not very high in calories.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (I like the “Sugar in the Raw” type)
  • 1/2 cup very hot water
  • 1 handful of fresh mint taken off the stems
  • 8 limes, halved for easy juicing
  • Ice
  • Sparkling water (cold)

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar and the hot water until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Place a few mint leaves at the bottom of a pitcher and crush with a wooden spoon.
  3. Juice the limes into the pitcher, add the sugar water.
  4. Fill 4 glasses with ice. Pour in the limeade and top with sparkling water.

Alternately, if you’re running short on time, you can add crushed mint, the juice of 1 lime, ice, and fill the rest of the glass with Sprite. It’s not quite as tasty, but it’s quick and easy.

Watermelon Lime Slush –  I love slush drinks. This next drink is one of my favorites for the hottest days.  You can follow the recipe for kid-friendly slush, or add some vodka, rum, or tequila to appeal to the older but young at heart.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Juice of 1 lime

Directions

  1. Combine watermelon, sugar, lime juice and 1 cup ice in blender until smooth.
  2. Serve immediately.

Peach Iced Tea – I have shared my recipe for Southern Sweet Tea before, but here is a delicious and super easy peach iced tea that will be a hit at your summer BBQ!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 peaches, halved and pitted
  • 4 black tea bags
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise and seeds scraped
  • Water

Directions

  1. Bring 3 cups water and the sugar to a boil in a pot.
  2. Add the peaches and vanilla bean (including the seeds). Simmer over medium heat for about 30 minutes.
  3. Discard the vanilla bean. Pour the peaches and syrup into a blender and puree until smooth.
  4. Strain the peach puree through a sieve/fine colander into a pitcher.
  5. Bring 4 cups  water to a boil in a small saucepan. Remove from heat, add the tea and steep for 10 minutes.
  6. Add tea to the pitcher with the peach puree. Stir to combine.
  7. Refrigerate until cold.
  8. The pulp from the fruit may have separated from the tea during chilling, so be sure to stir it before serving.
  9. Pour over ice cubes
