DealDash Pets: Basic Dog Training Tips

DealDash

Dogs can be wonderful companions, especially when they are well-behaved. Read on for more tips from DealDash.

Teaching your pet how to do tricks is a fun activity. Dogs love getting attention from their owners, so training them will help you bond with your dog. You can teach your dog some basic tricks that will help mentally stimulate them. If you are struggling to teach your dogs some tricks, here are some tips that can help you make the process of teaching your dog tricks much easier, from DealDash.

Give Them Rewards

One of the best ways to train your dog is to give them rewards. These rewards can include praise, a treat, or a new toy. This will help motivate your dog, and it will be easier to teach them new tricks. This technique will teach your dog that if he listens to what you say he will get an award. Rewarding your dog is the best and easiest training technique. It is a simple thing to do, and it improves your relationship with your dog.

Teach Doggie the Basics

Before you try to teach your dog difficult new tricks, you should teach them the basics. Some basic tricks are rolling over, spinning in circles, a high-five and yawning. It is best to use a clicker to get your dog to be more focused when you are teaching them a trick. When your dog is ready, you can move on to more difficult tricks.

Have Short Sessions

Dogs have a short attention span, so it is best to train them for a short amount of time.  Your dog may only have the ability to focus for 5 to 10 minutes of training or possibly even 15 minutes. It all depends on the type of dog you have. If you notice that your dog is making a lot of mistakes and losing its focus, then you should end the training session for that day. Give your dog a hug and try again the next day.

Thanks for Reading

Teaching your dog tricks does not have to be a hard task. Repetition and patience are a key component when it comes to training your dog. If you keep working with your dog and take it one day at a time, your dog will be doing new tricks before you know it. Try these tips from DealDash and you will see a difference in your dog.

For the protection of other people, and you, you have to learn some ways to get your dog to stop biting you and other people. Read on for more information from DealDash.

Neuter or Spay Your Dog

Dogs sometimes have a strange behavior when you do not spay or neuter your pet. There are a lot of benefits of spaying or neutering your dog.  One of those benefits is less biting. Neutering and spaying your dog will change the hormone levels within the body and will result in good behavior. It will make dogs less aggressive, so it is best to get your dog spayed or neutered. Not only that, it’s just a responsible thing for a pet owner to do.

Not letting your dog wander can prevent dog fights and the chances of them biting other people.  Keeping your dog inside or in the backyard can prevent dogs from biting other people. If you have spayed or neutered your dog you might want to take him to a doggy daycare occasionally so he can get his fill of rough play with other dogs.

Take an Obedience Class

Sometimes all you need to do is train your dog not to bite and have good behavior. Going to an obedience class can help train your dog not to bite you or others. Also, they will teach you how to work well with your dog. You will learn how to punish or reward your dog. Pet ownership can be very rewarding. DealDash wants to tell you all about it.

Life can be hard sometimes. With this in mind, sometimes all you need is a little comfort. Exercise

Exercising may seem like a chore for some people, but when you have a pet, you can easily squeeze a workout in. Owning a pet can help your overall fitness health.  Walking your dog every day or playing fetch will help keep you in shape. When you get into the habit of walking your dog, you will see an improvement in your overall health, and it is an easy way to stay active.

Other pets might not help you be as active as a dog, but you can also burn calories while playing with your cat, changing its litterbox, doing a water change on your fish tank, or cleaning a small animal’s cage.

DealDash Pets: Getting a Puppy or Kitten

DealDash

Getting a new puppy or kitten can be fun, but also a lot of work! Here are some tips from DealDash for you and your new pet.

When you get a new puppy or kitten, it is an exciting experience.  It is like being a parent for the first time. You will nurture them, and you will also constantly be taking pictures and admiring every cute thing he does. Although you are excited about bringing a puppy or kitten home, your new pet has to get used to the environment.  There are some ways to make that process easier, from DealDash.

Be Prepared

It is important to have all of the puppy or kitten essentials such as food, water, and a food dish; treats, a collar, toys, grooming supplies, kitty litter, a leash, bed, and a crate. You have to make sure you check with the breeder or shelter to see what type of food your puppy or kitten will eat. Also, ask what kind of kitty litter the kitten has been using. It can make the litter box training go more smoothly. When you prepare for your pet’s arrival, the process of getting your puppy or kitten used to the environment is easier.

Night Time

Puppies usually whimper or cry for their mother, and kittens tend to meow or even yowl. It is best to leave the crate or bed next to your bed so you can be there for your new baby. If your dog is crying, you should pet him through the crate and not take him out.  A warm bottle may help a puppy. Just put it under the bedding, and it can bring him comfort. Kittens are a little bit of a different story, they tend to find their own special sleeping spot which might be away from you, or even ON you!

Routines

Keeping your pet on a routine can help the process of adjusting to your home. Pick a certain time when you will walk him, feed him, and play with him.  He will expect the same thing to happen every day and your puppy or kitten will be comforted knowing that you are there for them. Just like small children, animals crave a routine. It makes them feel safe.

It may take some time, but your puppy or kitten will eventually get used to your home.  Just be patient with your puppy or kitten and let them know that they are safe and loved and your new pet will adjust to your home in no time.

DealDash Pets: Is My Pet Sick?

DealDash

We all love our pets. Sometimes it’s difficult to know when they are sick. Here is more information from DealDash.

Taking care of your pet is a lot of responsibility. Pets cannot speak so sometimes it is hard to understand what they need. Once in a while, your dog or cat will become ill and will need some treatment.  It can be hard to tell when your cat or dog is sick. Here are 3 signs that you should look for, from DealDash

Diarrhea or Vomiting

It is normal for a pet to vomit once in a while. However, if they vomit several times a day and also lack energy, you need to contact your veterinarian.  Vomiting or diarrhea can be a serious sign of other illnesses such as stomach issues and parasites. Blood in the stool is also a warning sign that your dog needs to see a vet.

Lack of Appetite

Monitoring your pets eating habits is very important. If you notice that your pet is not eating normally, you should try to figure out what is wrong with him. Dogs and cats can stop eating for a number of reasons such as stress, fever, pain, or illness. If the lack of appetite last more than 24 hours it is time to see a vet. Of course, if your pet is known to be a picky eater, then this might not apply to you. Try feeding them their favorite food, even if it’s a treat, and see if they are interested.

Changes in Bathroom Habits

When your pet is using the bathroom more, it can be a sign of diabetes. Increased urination can also be a sign of a liver or kidney issue.  Some of the signs are wetting inside the house or using the bathroom in the middle of the night. You may realize that you are filling up the water bowl more often. If you notice any of these signs, you should contact your vet immediately for a diagnosis.

There can be other reasons that your pet might have a change in their bathroom habits. If you’ve recently moved into a new house or gotten a new pet, then sometimes older pets can act out. If the problem persists, please see your vet.

Thanks for Reading DealDash Reviewed

When you have a pet, they are a part of your family, and it is best to recognize these warning signs before things get worse.  Remember not to panic when you notice these signs.  Schedule an appointment with your vet so you can get the proper diagnosis.

DealDash Pets: Feeding Your Dog

dealdash Do you want to know the top 3 foods you should be feeding your dog? Read on for more information from DealDash.

Having a nutritional diet is very important for your dog. They need the proper foods to stay healthy, just like you. Many people know about the traditional dog food that you can find in the store. Sometimes it is best to try other options for a nutritional boost or add different foods to your dog’s meal.  There are some foods that you should feed your dog so they can be healthy. Here are the top 3 foods you should feed your dog, from DealDash.

Raw Eggs for Fido

Eating raw eggs does not sound appetizing, but it is very nutritional for your dog. Raw eggs are healthy for your dog because it contains amino acid and it also contains a variety of vitamins and fatty acids.  It is best to eat the raw egg with the shell on to give your dog the proper nutrition that he needs from the raw egg. Even though it sounds gross, your dog will love it. If feeding him the shell just sounds too gross to you, you can mix up a raw egg into his dry food. He will eat every bite.

Organ Meat, Yum Yum!

Different types of meat, specifically organ meat, can give your dog the nutrition that he needs. Organ meat is filled with protein and has heavy doses of different vitamins such as B12, B2, and B1. Eating organ meat raw has a lot of benefits, but you can also fry the meat for a treat. No matter which way you feed the organ meat to the dog, you can bet he will be begging for more!

Surprise! Coconut Oil!

Coconut oil has surprising benefits for dogs. It can help a dog lose weight, and gives sedentary dogs plenty of energy to move around. Just add some coconut oil to your dog’s meal, and they probably will not taste the difference. It can also help his skin and coat. There are literally no downsides to coconut oil.

You can find all of these foods in your local grocery store. It does not cost a lot of money to add these foods into your dog’s diet. They may resist the food at first if they are a picky eater, but soon their body will get used to it.  Just take it slow and introduce the food to your dog little by little if he is reluctant. You will see a difference in their health in no time.

DealDash Dog Grooming at Home

DealDash

If you have a dirty doggie, you can groom him at home. Here are some tips and tricks from DealDash.

Earlier this week we talked about how to wash your dog if he gets sprayed by a skunk. If you missed that article, then just click right here to read it. Sometimes your dog might get a little stinky even without getting sprayed by a skunk. Keep reading to get more information about grooming your dog at home.

Brush His Teeth Daily

You wouldn’t skip a day without brushing your teeth (I hope!) so why should your dog? He might hate it at first, but if you continue brushing his teeth every day he will eventually get used to it and co-operate with you when you do his daily brushing.

In addition to brushing his teeth, there are also different sorts of dog chews on the market that are meant to clean your dog’s teeth. These are really not a substitute for actual teeth brushing no matter what it says on the package, but they make a nice addition to regular teeth brushing. They can also be used when you aren’t able to brush your dog’s teeth such as if you have a dog-sitter for the weekend.

Brush the Dog Daily

Some short-haired breeds might not look like the need daily brushing, but you should, anyway. Not only does brushing straighten up the hair, it also loosens up the dead hair, gives a skin massage, and also redistributes the oils of the coat to make your dog’s fur look shinier and more healthy.

Clip the Dog’s Nails

Before you bathe your dog, clip his nails. If your dog has clear-colored nails, great! This will be easy. Simply trim away the clear part and stop before you hit the quick, which is the pink part of the nail closest to the paw. Unfortunately, if your dog has dark nails this will be more difficult to do, and you might need to take him to a groomer or vet.

Bathe Your Dog

It depends on your dog’s fur and lifestyle how often you need to bathe your dog. If you have a dog that rarely goes outside or gets dirty then you might be able to bathe him once per month. However, if you have an active dog who loves to roll around in the dirt and get messy then you might need to bathe him every week, or as needed.

The actual task of bathing the dog is simple. Just fill up your tub about 1/3 of the way with lukewarm water. Place your dog in the tub, get his fur wet by pouring water over him with a cup or by using a shower head attachment. Massage in some doggie shampoo, and rinse. Dry him with a nice, fresh towel, and give him a treat. Simple!

Make a Cat Condo With DealDash

DealDash

Making a cat condo is one of the nicest things that you can do for your furry friend. Here are some tips and suggestions on how to make a cat condo from DealDash.

Do you already have lots of cat toys or even a cat tree and think you don’t need a cat condo? Think again, because cat condos similar to cat trees but they are not the same. A cat tree is more of a playground for cats, and a cat condo can be a playground as well as have many cubbies for the cat to hide or sleep in. Having a cat condo is nice if your house has small children or dogs because they will give your cat a safe place to hide, relax, and sleep without worrying. Read on for more information from DealDash.

Use Human Furniture

The quickest and easiest way to make a cat condo for your beloved pet is to make it out of discarded human furniture! Simply go to a yard sale or a thrift shop and find a small rectangular coffee table and a small square side table. Both of these need to be of similar width, but it’s okay if the side table is a bit smaller.

Paint the Tables

If you’d like to leave the tables wooden or whatever color they already are, that’s fine, you can skip down to the next step. However, your cat condo will be much more festive and fun if you paint the tables fun colors. You can take them outside and spray paint them if you like. If you prefer to paint indoors, then get acrylic paint and paint brush. Make sure that wherever you are painting you lay down some newspaper or a drop cloth so you don’t stain your surfaces.

Attach the Small Table

Put the small square table at one of the ends of the larger rectangular table. The other half of the larger rectangular table should be empty to create a shelf for the cat to sit upon.

You can attach the small table in a few different ways. The easiest way is to glue it with wood glue. You can also flip everything upside down and hammer nails into the underside of the larger table and into the legs of the smaller table. You can also use L-shaped brackets and screw them in from the sides to attach the legs. It’s your choice, but personally, I would go with the wood glue.

Add Sisal Rope for Scratching

The next step is to add sisal rope to some (or all) of the table legs for scratching. Cats love to scratch on sisal rope. By adding the sisal rope to this cat condo you will possibly be saving the life of your rugs and furniture.

Firstly, scuff the entire leg of the table with large-grained sandpaper, then apply wood glue to the first few inches of the leg. Begin wrapping the sisal rope around the leg until you have run out of the glue that you applied. Apply a few more inches of glue to the leg, and wrap more sisal rope. Continue gluing and wrapping the sisal rope until you have completely covered the entire table leg. Repeat this step for as many other legs of the tables as you like.

Add Carpet for Scratching and Comfort

If you can obtain some carpet to put on the cat condo, your cat will love you for it. If you don’t have access to any carpet samples, consider getting an extremely cheap welcome mat to use for this purpose. You can typically find one at the discount store for around $5-10.

Get the measurements of the top of the small square table and cut the carpet to fit. Scuff up the top of the small table with rough sandpaper to prepare it for the carpet. Next, apply wood glue to the entire surface. Also, apply wood glue to the back of the carpet. Finally, press the carpet down onto the table top. You can repeat this process for the larger rectangular table top as well, or leave it bare. It’s your choice. Your cat condo is done! I hope kitty likes it!

DealDash’s Unusual Uses for Baking Soda

DealDash

Baking soda is inexpensive and extremely versatile. Here are some interesting uses from DealDash.

Baking soda is the household name for sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate a processed natural salt; it was originally made as a leavening agent for baking. However, there are so many useful tasks for baking soda that it’s hard to imagine using it for just baking! In fact, I have rarely used baking soda in baking, but rather numerous uses around the house. Read on for some handy tips and tricks to using baking soda from DealDash.

Dry Dog Shampoo

If your dog is getting a little smelly but hates taking a bath, baking soda could be the tool you need for doggie to succeed. Since baking soda is completely safe and non-toxic it makes a great dry dog shampoo. All you have to do is sprinkle the baking soda on your dog, rub it in thoroughly, and then brush it out.

  • Pro Tip 1 – Do this outside, it can be messy
  • Pro Tip 2 – Put the baking soda in an old container that was meant for sprinkling dry substances, such as an old cleaned out parmesan cheese container or even a powdered sugar container.

Get the Smells Out of Books

Do you have any old books that are musty or smokey smelling? No worries, DealDash is here with a solution for you. Try baking soda! Just sprinkle baking soda on the pages, stick it in a bag, and put it in the freezer. A few days later take it outside and open it up. Shake out the book, and viola! No more smell.

Use as a Mouthwash or Toothpaste

Use can use baking soda as a toothpaste by simply wetting your brush, dipping it in the baking soda, and then brushing your teeth. If you prefer the minty freshness of actual toothpaste, then you can put your normal toothpaste on and then just sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on the top for a toothpaste booster.

Low on mouthwash? No problem. Baking soda is your answer. Simply take a small glass of water and mix in 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Use like a regular mouthwash. It neutralizes odors and will make your mouth feel fresh.

Clean Your Hairbrushes and Combs

Let’s face it, combs and especially hairbrushes can get dirty over time. You can clean them easily with baking soda, it will naturally remove oils, build up, and residue. Just put a teaspoon of baking soda into a cup, and stick your hairbrush or comb in. Let it soak for a bit, and then rinse off and dry. Presto, sparkling clean!

DealDash Helps: Stop Your Dog From Begging

DealDash Dog

It might have been cute when your dog was a tiny puppy, but begging isn’t so cute when he’s 60 pounds! Here are some tips and ideas from DealDash.

A dog begging at the table is commonly thought of as rather rude, and it’s a common complaint among dog owners. Many dog owners find it difficult to stop their dog from begging at the table, it can be a difficult habit to break. If you can find the time and dedication to work with your dog on this issue you can be well on your way to a more calm and enjoyable dinner, sans begging dog.

Just Ignore the Dog

Just ignoring your dog can be easier said than done, but if you are able to ignore his begging when you are eating then eventually he will figure out that there is no pay-off to begging at the table. However, if you give in sporadically, then you’re setting him back every single time. If he realizes that you will give in every 10 times that he begs, then he will just keep begging over and over again. It might sound a little bit mean to ignore him, but it’s really for his own benefit. Be sure to give him plenty of love and cuddles and maybe even a treat if you can get through a meal without him begging at the table.

Stop the People Food Altogether

If you’re a pet lover, then you probably think that you’re doing a nice thing for your dog when you give him people food. However, in most cases, this simply isn’t correct. Unless you’re giving him pure meat and vegetables, then the people food that you’re feeding him probably isn’t really healthy for him, anyway. If you can stop the people food altogether, including not giving him any in his bowl, then he will be healthier for it. In addition to being healthier, if you aren’t giving him any more people food, then you can’t give in to his begging at the table – unless you’re eating dog food, that is!

Make Sure the Family is On Board

It’s very important that your whole family is on board with the objective of not feeding the dog from the table anymore. No one really enjoys it when the dog begs at the table, so this should be an easy thing to agree on. However, if you have any small kids in your family, you will need to be sure that they understand what’s going on. Kids love to feed the dog from their plate, especially if there are things on there that they don’t want to eat! If your kids are younger than 5 or so, then you’ll probably need to keep a close eye on them to make sure that they aren’t either sneaking the dog treats or even accidentally feeding him by dropping things inadvertently.

DealDash Pets: Guinea Pigs

DealDash guinea pig

Guinea Pigs are a nice and gentle pet for kids and adults. DealDash takes a look at their care.

Have you ever held a guinea pig? They are so soft, cute, and cuddly.  Also, guinea pigs are easy to care for, inexpensive, and provide a lot of entertainment. Guniea pigs only need a few supplies and a lot of love and attention from their new human family. Here is a list of what you would need to get before you get a guinea pig as a pet, from DealDash.

Guinea Pig Supplies

  • A cage. There are many commercially available guinea pig cages at the pet store. Be sure to get as big a cage as space and budget allow, you should be sure to get at least 4.5 square feet of cage space as a minimum for one guinea pig. Guinea pigs happily live in pairs, though, so be sure that you get a cage even larger if you decide to keep two at a time.
  • Bedding. Make sure to never use cedar or aspen bedding, as it can cause respiratory problems. Pine is usually alright, but the best bedding for your little guinea pig is paper.
  • Water bowl or bottle. A large heavy bowl works great, and as an added bonus you can just pop it right in the dishwasher when you are doing the dishes. If you prefer, you can get a water bottle that mounts to the cage, instead.
  • Guinea Pigs love to graze on their food, so be sure that you have some timothy hay available for them every day.
  •  Green leafy vegetables should make up about 20% of your guinea pigs’ diet. Veggies that are good for guinea pigs include lettuce, celery, carrots, tomatoes, cucumber, parsley, kale, raw broccoli, and small amounts of spinach and peas.
  • Food pellets. You don’t need a lot of food pellets, but variety is the spice of life, so be sure to pick up some food pellets for your guinea pig to graze on after he’s finished his fresh veggies.
  • Love. Lots of love. Be sure to hold and cuddle your guinea pig friend daily. Let him run around in a guinea pig proofed area every day and he will be a happy and healthy pet.

DealDash Helps: Keep Your Pet’s Food Bowls Clean

Dealdash pets animals cat dog

No matter what type of pet you have it’s important to keep their food and water bowls clean. Here are some tips and tricks from DealDash to help you.

You like to eat from clean dishes and bowls, correct? Well, so does your pet! By regularly cleaning your pet’s dishes, you can prevent bacterial growth that could make him or her sick. In addition, you can make his or her eating and drinking experiences much more enjoyable! And that’s what we all want for our pets, right?

Hand-Washing the Old Fashioned Way

Not everyone has a dishwasher, and some people even prefer to wash the dishes by hand. If you choose to wash your pet’s dishes by hand, then be sure to choose a mild dishwashing liquid. If you are not sure which detergents are mild, check the product labels for indications that the product would be soft on your hands. If you want to be extra sure that the dishwashing detergent is safe for your favorite pet, then you can even make your own! It only takes a moment. Just combine equal parts of baking soda, warm water, and table salt.

After washing your pet’s dish, it’s smart to disinfect it as well. If you haven’t scrubbed the dishes quite well enough by just hand-washing, then you should definitely disinfect them. Don’t worry, it’s easy. To disinfect the dish after scrubbing it, mix one gallon of water with one tablespoon of bleach. Add this mixture to the dish and let it sit for about two minutes before rinsing it out. Be sure to rinse it very well.

Better Yet, Wash Them in the Dishwasher

No matter how hot the water is that you use when hand-washing the dishes, it probably isn’t as hot as a dishwasher gets. A dishwasher gets all the way up to 140 degrees F to remove and kill bacteria. To prevent cross-contamination with the human family’s dishes, it is preferable to wash your pet’s dishes by themselves in the dishwasher. Be sure to have two sets of pet dishes for when one of them is in the dishwasher.

Of course, doing a whole dishwasher cycle for just a few dishes is rather wasteful. If it doesn’t bother you to put your own dishes in with your pet’s, it is fine if you have a ‘sanitize’ setting on your dishwasher. This setting effectively kills and removes all bacteria, thus preventing cross-contamination issue that we previously discussed. Be sure to wash your pet’s dishes a few times a week. Your pet will thank you for it!

DealDash Loves Kittens

DealDash Kitten

Kittens! Who doesn’t love kittens! DealDash loves all animals, but kittens are extra special.

When you ask what someone’s favorite animal is, cat is the overwhelming response. Everyone from little children to seniors love cats and kittens. Here are some fun and interesting cat facts from DealDash.

Fun Cat Facts

Cats are the most popular pet in the United States: There are 88 million pet cats and 74 million dogs.

Cats sleep 70% of their lives.

Owning a cat can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack by a third. If that’s not a great reason to adopt a cat, I don’t know what is!

The world’s largest cat measured 48.5 inches long. That’s over 4 feet long!!

The world’s richest cat is worth $13 million after his human passed away and left her fortune to him.

A cat has five toes on his front paws, and four on the back, unless he’s a polydactyl. Polydactyl cats are also referred to as “Hemingway cats” because the author was so fond of them. There are 45 Hemingway cats living at the author’s former home in Key West, FL.

A cat’s nose is ridged with a unique pattern, just like a human fingerprint.

Black cats are bad luck in the United States, but they are good luck in the United Kingdom and Australia. Sadly, these cats are the ones that are most frequently surrendered to the animal shelter and the least often adopted.

The largest litter of kittens produced 19 kittens. That poor Mama Cat!

If you want to adopt a cat, you can visit your local Humane Society or check out petfinder.com.

What Do They Need?

A cat really needs very few items. A food and water dish, a bed, a litter box, toys, and a bed or blanket is all they really need to be happy. Combine that with vaccinations and visits to the vet, and you will have one healthy, happy, long-lived companion.

Luckily, DealDash can provide quite a few things on that list. DealDash often offers food/water dishes, pet beds, and even automatic litter boxes for auction. The pet item auctions on DealDash are always very popular, so be sure to set your BidBuddy! Vist DealDash for all of your pet’s needs. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Dogs: Advanced Tricks

screenshot-6

If you enjoyed the DealDash article on basic dog tricks, then you definitely need to read this one on advanced dog tricks.

Everyone knows that a dog is a loyal companion, always there to give you puppy dog eyes and a head to pat, but they are actually very smart animals and can learn to do more than “sit” and “stay.” In this DealDash article we’ll look at some more advanced tricks that you can teach your best friend on four legs how to master and be the king (or queen) of the dog park.

Kissy Kissy

  1. Most dogs will lick your face without you even having to ask, but teaching them to give a quick no-tongue kiss without the saliva can be a little tricky. If you’d like, prepare the dog by brushing their teeth.
  2. Hold a treat in front of your face, and say the command “kiss”. Present your cheek near the dog, and get closer until she touches it with her nose.
  3. Immediately pull away, and give her the treat before she is able to lick you.
  4. If you are quick, the dog will learn soon enough that all she has to do to get a reward is to lightly press her nose against your cheek when you say “kiss”.
  5. Please note – If the dog likes to gently (or not so gently!) nip when over excited then this is probably not the best trick to teach her.

High 5

  1. Start by asking the dog to sit, and reward her with a yummy treat.
  2. Hold a treat in front of her but just slightly out of reach.
  3. Say “high 5” while tapping one of his feet. Usually dogs will raise their foot to try to paw at the treat in your opposite hand.
  4. When she raises her foot, lightly grab it with your free hand. When you make skin contact, give the dog the treat and lots of praise.
  5. Keep repeating these steps until the dog raises her foot automatically when you give the high 5 command.
  6. It sounds simple, and it is – but it takes a bit of practice, so make sure you have lots of treats with you.

Dancing Dog

  1. Dancing is usually reserved as a trick for smaller dogs, but medium-to-large dogs can also learn to dance with patience and some treats.
  2. Be warned, though, this trick is not recommended for dogs that are overweight or suffer from problems with their hind legs or back.
  3. As your dog to sit, then raise a treat slowly up and over the dog’s head. Give the command “dance” until she rises up on her hind legs.
  4. For the best results, move the treat slightly behind the dog’s head to get her to stand up on her hind legs.
  5. If the dog already has good balance, and is accustomed to standing on their hind legs and jumping as smaller dogs are prone to do, then hold the treat in front of her nose, and then slowly move it around his head until she spins in a circle.
  6. For bigger dogs that aren’t used to standing on their hind legs, this might take a little time and patience on your part.

DealDash Keeps Pets Safe

screenshot

Like many Americans, you probably have some sort of pet, be it a kitty, dog, bunny, or reptile. DealDash wants to help you keep your pets safe over the holidays.

December is here and the Christmas season is in full swing, from the music on the radio, to the decorations, to the baking, and the present wrapping. Which one of these activities doesn’t match the other? The music! Do you know why? Because all of the other activities can be harmful to pets. Let’s go through the other activities, and I will explain why they can be harmful to pets, and what you can do to help keep your pets out of danger.

Decorations – Decorations can be dangerous to pets, especially dogs and cats, because they are prone to playing with them, chewing them, and sometimes accidentally ingesting them. Playing with your plastic or cloth decorations shouldn’t be too much of a problem, if if you have fragile glass ornaments or snow globes, keep them out of the reach of your pets. One wrong move and they could shatter the glass, hurting themselves in the process. You also need to be very careful that your pets don’t ingest any tinsel from your tree. If you have a pet that you know can’t resist tinsel, maybe you should substitute a garland instead.

Baking – Baking itself isn’t too dangerous for your pet, as long as they don’t touch any metal pans while they are still hot. However, chocolate can be extremely harmful, and in some cases even fatal for dogs. If your dog just has a small taste you will probably just end up with a mess to clean, but if they accidentally have a large amount you should call your vet. Remember, your pet is counting on you to keep them safe.

Present wrapping – Present wrapping is another activity that sounds relatively innocuous but can be a danger to pets. Why? Because if a cat or dog accidentally swallows any present-wrapping ribbon it can get caught in their intestines and cause a bowel obstruction. It’s a relatively rare occurrence, but please keep it in mind when you are wrapping your presents this year.

I hope that you found this article on pets helpful. DealDash has many pet items up for auction. DealDash has dog, cat, bird, and fish items up fairly often. Visit DealDash now to check out the auctions. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Talks: Rescued Pets

Image result for rescued pets

If you’re thinking of getting a new pet, please consider getting a rescued pet instead of purchasing one. It’s the kinder solution.

When you are preparing to get a new pet there are various places to get them – online, the newspaper, a pet store, a rescue group, a friend, or an animal shelter. All of these are viable options, of course, but the kindest thing that you could do is adopt a homeless pet from a shelter or rescue group.

If you’re wondering why you should adopt a rescued pet instead of buying one from the pet store, the biggest reason is that you’ll be saving their life! It’s sad to think about, but every year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States. It’s because too many pets come into shelters and there is limited space.

Luckily for some animals, there are places called “No-Kill” shelters, and they are exactly that – they don’t euthanize any of the animals that they get, with a few exceptions. If they receive an animal that is very old and sick and doesn’t have a very good quality of life due to those factors they might euthanize him, or if an animal has shown to be aggressive towards humans. However, that isn’t usually the case, so most of the animals that they get live long lives in their kennels, until someone adopts them.

It’s great for the animal that is being adopted, and it’s great for you as well. There are many health benefits to owning a pet. Cats can lower your stress levels by being a low-key cuddle partner, and dogs can help you get more active with daily walks. Some of the other benefits of adopting a dog or cat from a rescue group or a shelter are:

  • Most either come spayed or neutered already, or come with a certificate to have it done
  • All come with vaccinations
  • Some are even microchipped
  • The cost is significantly less, though most shelters and groups have a small fee to adopt
  • You’ll be saving your pets life, as well as opening up another spot at the shelter to save another animal’s life

Doesn’t that make you want to adopt a pet from a shelter or a rescue? If you need pet supplies check DealDash first. DealDash has dog, cat, and small animal supplies for auction. DealDash Decodes Dogs

Image result for thinking dog

Do you ever wonder what your dog is thinking? Let DealDash help you figure out your best friend’s thoughts.

“Whoof yelp yipyipyip!” Do you have any idea what that means? Of course not! Luckily, dogs try to communicate with humans in a variety of ways. When we are examining dog communication, it can include facial expression, eyebrows, eye contact, vocalizations (as mentioned above), and body posture, which includes the dog’s torso, legs, and tail movements. Humans also try to communicate with dogs, as you may well know. We use vocalization, hand signals, body posture and petting. Here are some of the more common things that your dog is trying to communicate.

Raised hackles – When you see a dog with his hair standing on end along the back of his spine it usually means that he is anxious, upset, or afraid. However, if it happens when he seems otherwise playful, then he is just trying to get you to play.

Tail wagging – Most people automatically think that a wagging tail means a happy pup, and they would be right if the tail is loose and relaxed. If the tail is wagging while straight out and stiff, it might be best to back away slowly, because he’s angry.

Play bow – The hint is in the name! If your dog bows down in front of you, or darts away and comes back and bows then he wants you to play with him. If you’re not sure what the play bow looks like, I will include a picture below.

Image result for play bow

Trembling – The obvious answer might be that your pup is cold if he is trembling, especially if it’s winter. However, trembling can also mean that he’s anxious or afraid.

Eye contact – The two main forms of eye contact are: One, an eye-to-eye stare which means he is trying to assert his dominance over you, threaten you, or warning you that it might be best to back away slowly. And two, when his eyes are turned away to avoid direct eye contact, refusing to meet your gaze, this means he is in submission to you.

Licking – Licking can be a friendly greeting, of course, but it can also signal submission or nervousness as well.

Yawning – When a dog yawns it can mean he’s tired, but it can also mean that he’s nervous. Dogs often yawn to comfort themselves and use it as a calming method.

DealDash Pets: Sugar Gliders

Image result for sugar gliders

The majority of people who have pets stick with the more common species such as a cat, dog, or even a lizard.

However, there are some people out there that like exotic pets. The sugar glider is a great example of a cute, cuddly, and fun exotic pet. If you live in Alaska or California, don’t get too excited about having a sugar glider, unfortunately Sugar gliders are illegal in both of those states. If you live in Pennsylvania or Massachusetts, you would need a special permit to own a sugar glider, so perhaps they aren’t ideal for you, either. Regulations can vary by state and laws can change, so check with your state Fish, Game and Wildlife Department before you make plans to get a sugar glider.

As you might guess, a sugar glider is partial to anything sweet, especially fresh fruit & vegetables. If you decide to keep one as a pet you will need to give it fresh fruits and vegetables every day, otherwise it will not be a very healthy little animal.

As for the gliding, the sugar glider can’t actually fly, but they do have a membrane that stretches from their wrist to their ankles, allowing them to glide from tree to tree in the wild.

An interesting item to note: though they look like a squirrel, they are actually a marsupial, like a kangaroo or a koala bear, so they keep their babies in a pouch until the babies are ready to be slightly more independent, though in the wild they usually do live in a family group. Sugar gliders have a lifespan of about 10 years, and stay very small, approximately 6 inches and 6 ounces.

These adorable little creatures are extremely smart, and even though they might seem like a hamster or gerbil at first glance they are actually as smart as a dog or cat. They are able to learn their name, come when called, and do a few different tricks.

Not only are they cute and smart, but they are cuddly and loving as well. Once they have bonded to their “family”, which includes your family and your pets, they don’t want to be without you, and would be very happy to spend every waking moment with you, your kids, or your cat or dog.

Sugar gliders require a cage, toys, food, and love. They don’t need any vaccinations, flea treatments, or other vet care, unless they get sick. Sugar gliders make adorably awesome pets, if you’re looking for a tiny pet with a big personality give the sugar glider a try, you will be pleased.

DealDash has a great selection of animal supplies available for auction. You can find cages, pet beds, and more at DealDash. Just click this link right here and it will take you to DealDash so you can browse the auctions. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Pets: Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs are adorable and can make a great pet for kids and adults. They are fairly easy to take care of, and can be lots of fun.

Guinea pigs are cute, cuddly, easy to care for, soft, expressive, and even make little squeals of delight when they are happy. Guinea pigs are a compact pet, weighing only about 1.5 – 2.5 pounds when full-grown, and measuring between 8 – 10 inches in length. They typically live approximately four to five years, but it’s possible for them to live as long as eight years. Guinea pigs only need a few supplies, and a lot of love and attention from their family members.

Here are the things that you will need to get started with your new Guinea pig friend:

  • A house. There are many commercially available cages and condos out there. While Guinea pigs don’t need quite as much space as a larger pet, be sure to get as big a cage as space and budget allows, shoot for approximately 7 square feet. Also, there are two other things to look for in a cage; The tops must be open, as in there is space between the bars to permit easy air flow, and the bottom needs to be solid. It can be made of metal or plastic, but it absolutely cannot be wire, wire can hurt guinea pig feet and lead to infection.
  • Water bowl or water bottle. A large heavy bowl works great, and as an added bonus you can just pop it right in the dishwasher when you are doing the dishes. use water bottles. Water bottles are designed to hang on the side of your cage and provide water from a metal spout. The spout contains ball bearings that prevent water from flowing unless they are actively moved out-of-the-way by your pet. These are not as easy to clean, but they are very popular with Guinea pig owners.
  • Food bowl or dish. As with the water dish, a large heavy bowl works great.
  • Shelter/Hutch. When guinea pigs are startled their natural instinct is to scurry into a dark, enclosed space. It’s therefore important to provide your guinea pig with some sort of covered shelter. You can get a very inexpensive plastic one at the pet store, but be sure that it doesn’t have a bottom on it, this will just get dirty.
  • Bedding. Aspen wood shavings are fairly absorbent, easy to find, and safe for use with guinea pigs.
  • Hay. Hay is a large part of a guinea pig’s diet and should be available all the time. Timothy hay is the best hay to give your guinea pig.
  • Food pellets. Make sure that you get the food pellets specifically for guinea pigs and not other small animals.

DealDash often has animal supplies up for auction. DealDash carries dog, cat, bird, fish, and small animal supplies. Just click right here and it will take you to the area of DealDash where pet items are located. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Pets: Bunnies

Rabbits are a wonderful pet for kids and adults. Let’s look a little closer at their care.

Do you know anyone who has a pet bunny? Rabbits are easy to care for, soft, cuddly, fairly inexpensive, and can even learn how to use a little box! Rabbits only need a few supplies, and a lot of love and attention from their family members. Here is a list of what you would need to procure before you get a rabbit as a pet.

  • A house. There are many commercially available bunny cages, hutches, and condos out there. Alternatively, you could “bunny proof” a room of your home and let your bunny live there instead of in an actual cage. Bunny proofing requires an eye to detail, and can be time-consuming. If you go the cage route, be sure to get as big a cage as space and budget allows.
  • A litter box. As with the cage, the bigger the better when it comes to litter boxes. Try to get the largest litter box that can fit comfortably in the space that you have allotted to it. You don’t even have to buy an actual litter box. Get creative! A fairly shallow storage bin, like the kind meant to go under a bed would work great. Don’t forget to get the litter! Try the kind made out of recycled paper, bunnies like that kind the best.
  • Water bowl. A large heavy bowl works great, and as an added bonus you can just pop it right in the dishwasher when you are doing the dishes.
  • Hay. The biggest part of your furry friend’s diet should be Timothy hay.
  • Food pellets. You don’t need a lot of food pellets, but variety is the spice of life, so be sure to pick up some food pellets for your bunny to supplement his hay diet.
  • Love. Lots of love. Be sure to hold and cuddle your bunny friend daily. Let him run around in a rabbit proofed area every day and he will be a happy and healthy pet.

DealDash often has animal supplies up for auction. DealDash carries dog, cat, bird, fish, and yes, bunny supplies. Just click right here and it will take you to the area of DealDash where there are pet items. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Pets: Calm in the Storm

Does your dog hide and your cat cower when there is a storm raging outside? Let’s discuss how to help your beloved pet when it’s scary outside.

Dogs and cats have come a long way from their brave and fierce ancestors who lived out in the wilderness. Our pets today have cushy lives with their own beds, bowls, and even clothing! Since we coddle our beloved pets they have lost the fearlessness and have become softies for the most part. Here are a few quick tips on how to make your dog or cat feel better when there is loud booming thunder and flashes of lightning outside.

The first tip, of course, is to let your pet inside! If you have an indoor/outdoor cat be sure that he comes in when it starts to rain. If you have an outside dog that you really don’t want inside on your couch or bed, at least let him into your garage or basement for the night. It will make him feel better, and you won’t have to listen to any terrified barking or howling all night.

Next, did you know that you can swaddle your dog or cat just like you would a newborn baby? There are actually special shirts that you can buy from the veterinarian or the per store that are made for this purpose, but instead of spending $40 and up on a special shirt, you can just wrap up your “baby” and snuggle up with them on the couch. It will make them feel a lot better, and it will most likely improve your mood as well.

Finally, be sure that you have a pet crate or carrier available to your dog or cat if they want to use it. If you normally keep their crate or carrier in the garage or in a closet bring it out and put it in the living room or your bedroom so they can retreat to the safety of their “cave” if they feel more safe and secure in an enclosed space. You can even make it more inviting by putting in a soft blanket, pillow, or even a toy inside to calm your beloved doggie or kitty.

I hope that you found these tips helpful for helping your pet feel more safe and secure in a storm. If you are in need of anything for a pet such as a nice comfy pet bed be sure to check out DealDash. DealDash has lots of items that will pamper your pet and make them feel loved. Just click this link right here and it will take you to some great pet-related auctions on DealDash. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Pet Talk: Hamster

Most kids would love to have a pet. Sometimes it just isn’t practical to have a cat or dog. How about a hamster?

I admit it, hamsters are not as exciting a pet as a cat or dog. However, they can be great fun, especially for younger kids. They have all of the great hallmarks of a perfect first pet; they are inexpensive, their habitat can be easily purchased and not very expensive, and they are easy to keep as a pet.

There are different breeds of hamster, but if you are going to your local Petco you will probably see short and long-haired European hamsters. When you get your hamster they will probably be a baby or young hamster, not yet fully grown. When they are adults they will be around 5 inches long and can live between 2 and 3 years with good care.

When you are shopping for your new pet hamster be sure to look for one that has bright clear eyes, is active, and doesn’t have any kind of moisture or wet look neat it’s tail. The best way to pick a great pet is to make sure that you get the healthiest one that you can find.

As I said before, the hamster and it’s supplies are fairly reasonably priced, and they don’t need a lot of accessories to be happy. The hamster itself should be between $12-20 if you go to a chain pet store. Below I will list the supplies that you will need to get your new little furry buddy off to a good start.

  • Cage
  • Bedding – high quality paper bedding, crumbled paper bedding, or hardwood shavings. Cedar-based products are not suitable. They can give your furry friend a respiratory infection.
  • Water bottle & food dish
  • Food (prepared hamster pellet diet as well as fresh fruit and timothy hay)
  • Wheel (for exercise)
  • Chew sticks

That’s all you really need to get started. I would suggest getting the biggest cage that’s reasonably priced and can fit easily where you plan to keep the cage. Hamsters love to run and climb, so multi-level cages with tubes are recommended but not required. When you are looking for a cage be sure that it’s made for hamsters and not a larger animal such as a guinea pig, because  a hamster can easily squeeze through the cage bars if they are spaced too far apart.

DealDash Speaks On: Outdoor Ponds

When you hear the phrase “outdoor pond” does your mind conjure up a fabulous mansion? The good news is that you can have a pond on a budget in your own backyard.

The great thing about an outdoor pond in your backyard is that you can choose if you want it to be an extremely budget-conscious small one, a medium-sized one, or go all out and break the budget with an extremely large and fancy one. What’s also nice is that you don’t have to get everything all at once. You can start your project, complete the basics, and then add-on more decorative or additional items later on.

Building your own backyard pond can be a bit labor-intensive, but if you put your mind to it (and don’t plan too big of a pond) you can knock this project out in a weekend. Read on for a quick primer of installing your new outdoor pond.

Materials needed

  • Shovel
  • Tape measure
  • Flexible pond liner
  • Water pump
  • Filter
  • Edging stones
  • Heater (optional)

Directions

  • Use your shovel to remove the grass in and around the area where you want your pond to be located. Remember to remove the grass 6 to 12 inches beyond the perimeter so you’ll have a flat surface.
  • Starting along the outside edge, dig out the edging to a depth of around 10 inches. Then remove all dirt within the pond area by layers, digging from the center outwards. Dig out an extra 2 inches deeper for an underlayment. Most people use sand. If you live in a colder climate be sure to create a spot to overwinter plants and fish. In cold areas, you need a zone that won’t freeze to keep your fishies happy. It should be 3 feet deep and 3 feet wide. Don’t place a fountain or pump in this deep zone. Alternately, you could skip the no-freeze zone and purchase a pond heater that you would need to use as soon as the night-time temperatures drop to anywhere near freezing. The top of the finished edging should be 1-2 inches above the area outside your pond to prevent runoff from entering the pond.
  • Be sure to inspect the hole for sharp stones or roots and remove them. Flexible liners can easily puncture from rocks, gravel, and other sharp objects. Cushion the liner with an underlayment of some kind. Options include 2 to 3 inches of sand, fiberglass insulation material or newspaper. Place your chosen material in the bottom of the hole and on any shelves cut into the sides of the pond. Also, pack damp sand into any holes in the sidewalls where large rocks were removed.
  • Using a partner, drape the liner loosely into the hole with an even overlap on all sides. Then weigh down the edges with a few of the pieces of edging that you are planning on using when the pond is complete. Once the liner is in place to your liking, fill the pond with water. As the pond fills with water, adjust the liner to conform to the sides of the pond, and smooth out as many creases and wrinkles as possible. When the pond is full, trim off excess lining with sharp scissors. Leave enough liner around the pond rim to extend underneath and a few inches behind the first row of edging stones.
  • To keep the liner in place while adding your edging stones, push long nails through the liner into the ground every foot or so around the pond rim. You can use natural flat stones that you find yourself for the edging, or you can purchase stones. You can even use driftwood, or bricks. To prevent your stones (or bricks or driftwood) from moving, mortar them in place. Mortar comes premixed and is fairly inexpensive.
  • After the liner is installed and the water has been filled then you can add your pump and filter. Please consult your local pet shop to figure out what sort of living animals that you would like to put in your pond, anything from cheapie feeder goldfish, frogs, koi, etc.

I hope that you found this article about backyard pond installation helpful. If you would like to save some money with your project be sure to check out DealDash. Sit! Stay! Come! Training your dog can be quite a chore if you don’t know what you’re doing. Here are some helpful hints to get you started.

The first command that most dogs learn is “sit.” This is a very important command to learn, because it can help keep your pet out of danger, for example if he escapes his leash and is running into traffic, or if you see a skunk in your yard you might be able to save him from being sprayed, which can be very unpleasant. Teaching a dog how to sit is the foundation to teaching your dog other commands as well, such as “stay.”
Teaching your dog to sit is actually pretty simple. Here is a quick course in Sitting 101.
  1. Get on the dog’s level, either on the floor or in a chair next to him. It will help him pay attention to you.
  2. Hold a dog treat or a sumptuous piece of lunch meat or cheese close to his nose and let his head follow the treat as you move your hand up.
  3. As his head moves up, his hindquarters will lower.
  4. When his bottom hits the floor, immediately give him the treat.
  5. Repeat multiple times every day. This is where using lunchmeat or cheese can come in handy – rip them up into tiny pieces and keep them in a ziplock bag. One piece of meat or cheese can last you for many many lessons.

Once he’s learned how to sit, it’s time to teach him how to “stay.”
  1. First, tell him to “Sit.”
  2. Then open the palm of your hand in front of you, like you are trying to get a car to stop, and say “Stay.”
  3. Take a few steps back…
  4. If he stays call him to you and immediately give him the treat.
  5. Do this multiple times per day, taking a couple more steps back each time.
  6. Always reward him for staying — even if it’s just for a few seconds.
