DealDash Prepares for a Winter Storm

DealDash

There have been many winter storms lately. DealDash is here to tell you 3 tips to prepare for a winter storm.

Every year most of us go through different seasons. The weather is always changing. That is why it is good to prepare for any weather, especially snow storms. Depending on where you live, winter storms can be an inconvenience for you. People dread the winter time depending on where you live, but some people enjoy cold weather. Regardless of how you feel about winter storms, you still have to prepare for a winter storm. Yes, even if you live in the south! Read on for more information from DealDash.

Stock Up on Necessary Supplies

It is important to have all of the necessary supplies that you need for a winter storm. You will need winter storm supplies such as batteries in case of a power outage, a shovel to remove the snow, and non-perishable food and water.  When you are prepared with these items it can make going through a winter storm easier.

Personally, since I have a large family, I keep a big stock of pretty much everything on hand in the pantry. Things that keep for quite a while like cereal, soup, crackers, pasta and sauce, bottled water, granola bars, and fruit cups are always fully stocked in my pantry. When there is a winter storm coming and other people run to the grocery store, I know to stay away from the store! No matter how long the storm is, even if the storm and clean-up last a week (which it never does!) I know that my family has plenty of food.

Plan Ahead of Time

Planning ahead of time for a winter storm can protect your house from damage. Simple things such as repairing your roof leaks, cutting away branches that can fall on your house and allow faucets to drip will help keep your home safe.

Planning ahead of time includes getting out all of your snow supplies and have them ready. Have your shovel, gas for your snowblower, salt or sand, and cold weather clothing. Having these things ready can really help when a winter storm is coming.

Stay Warm

The best thing you can do for a winter storm is to stay warm. Invest in a generator if the power goes out. Make sure that you dress in layers. It is also important to stay near your loved ones so you can create body heat. The closer you are the warmer you will stay. Keeping your head warm is important. You can wear a hood or use a scarf or hat to cover your head. Don’t forget the socks and fuzzy slippers! Stay cozy.

Thanks for Reading

Winter storms can be a tough situation to deal with, but if you are prepared you have nothing to worry about. These tips will help you stay warm and safe during the winter.

DealDash Stays Healthy During the Winter

DealDash

Winter is just about here. Try to stay healthy with these tips from DealDash.

When you are a parent keeping your kids healthy is your top priority. Also, you should work to keep yourself healthy, too. This is especially true in the winter months. Here are some simple tips that you can use to help keep yourself and your kids as healthy as possible in winter, from DealDash.

Get Enough Sleep

You need to make sure that you and your children are getting enough sleep. Kids can get get a little overly active being stuck inside. Ergo, you need to make sure that they are getting time outside when possible and that you are keeping them busy inside as well. You will also want to make sure that your kids are getting enough rest so that they will be able to stay as healthy as possible.

While we need the appropriate amount rest out children need it much more. That doesn’t mean that you should stay up until the late hours, either. Shoot for 7-8 hours of sleep per night for yourself, and 10+ hours for children.

Take Your Vitamins

Additional vitamins might be needed during the winter to keep you and your kids healthy. You will want to look into Vitamin D, as many people do not get enough sunlight during the winter months. Vitamin C might also be in order to make sure that you and your kids are as healthy as possible during the winter months. They make wonderful gummy multi-vitamins for both kids and adults. They are very similar to gummy bears, so they are not a chore, but a treat!

Hand Washing is Imperative

You also need to teach your kids about the importance of washing their hands. This is not only for winter but all year long so that your kids will stay healthy. You need to make sure to teach the reason that they need to wash their hands as doing this is just as important as the act of washing their hands itself.

Making sure that your kids are washing their hands can help not only them, but you to keep from getting sick. As we know, little kids frequently touch things that are covered in germs. The more often they wash their hands the less likely they are to spread the germs to the rest of the family.

DealDash: Indoor Winter Activities for Kids

DealDash

Winter is coming! Here are some fun activities for your kids to do inside, from DealDash.

With the weather getting cooler parents are no doubt trying to think of activities for their kids to do indoors. It’s important to keep the kids entertained. Here are a few fun activities that you can do with your kids the next time that it is too cold to be outside, from DealDash.

Make a Treasure Hunt

You can plan a treasure hunt for your kids to do indoors. It doesn’t need to be anything too complex, just a few clues for them to guess the different locations in the house that they need to find. Once they complete the treasure hunt they can get their prize.

When thinking about a prize, you can make the prize another fun activity for them to do, such as baking cookies together. Another fun activity that could be the prize is ingredients to make slime.

Let’s Finger Paint!

Finger painting is a great choice for little kids that need something to do indoors. You can set up an area in the kitchen for them to create their masterpieces to minimize the mess and just let them get creative. There are all kinds of paints that you can purchase for finger painting or you can even make your own for another fun project. The two main traits that you want your finger paint to possess are being non-toxic and washable.

For Older Kids, Try Puzzles & Board Games

Puzzles and board games are another fun option on colder days when you can’t go play outside. There are all kinds of puzzles and board games for all ages so you are sure to be able to find something that your kids will enjoy playing. It is a great pastime to do together as a family. Some of the favorites at my house include Trouble and matching games.

Get Creative With Picture Collages

Making picture collages is a fun way for you kids to express their creativity. You can make collages from pictures that you have taken or you can take pictures out of magazines and news papers for your kids to get creative with for their collage. One of my favorite ways to get pictures for my kid’s collages is by using my Fuji Instax 8. It takes instant pictures just like an old-fashioned Polaroid camera, except they are much smaller.

Thanks for Reading the Blog

Finding something for your kids to do when it is too cold to get outside can seem really difficult but it doesn’t need to be. With a little creative thinking, you can come up with some great ideas like the ones mentioned above that will keep your kids occupied for hours.

DealDash Helps: Save Money on Heating

DealDash

Winter is coming. It’s time to think about saving on heating costs, with DealDash.

With cooler months quickly approaching, you need to start thinking about heating your home for the winter. Unfortunately, this becomes incredibly expensive for a lot of families, especially those that use oil heating. Here are a few ways you can save on heating your home this winter, from DealDash.

Pile on the Layers

One very simple way to save money on your heating bill is to wear warm clothing or wrap up in a blanket. If you wear lighter clothing around the house you will find that you will want to turn the heat up. You will be wasting more you could have been saving.

In addition to extra layers of clothing, be sure that each family member has a heavy blanket on their bed. DealDash has some very nice down alternative comforters for auction. I actually won one for around $3 including the cost of bids!

Eliminate the Drafts

You will also want to work on eliminating all the drafts in your home that you can. There are kits to cover windows to get rid of drafts for a very reasonable price. You can also make yourself a few draft dodgers to get rid of drafts coming through the bottoms of doors. Simply sew a long tube and fill it with sand or beans and stick it up against the bottom of the door. I personally have one against the bottom of the fireplace as well.

Home-cooked Meals Help

If you make a meal in the oven, leave the door open a bit to let the warm air out. That can help you from having to turn up your thermostat and you can also turn your heat down at appropriate times during the day to save money on your heating bill. Since you have to cook meals for your family anyway, why not take advantage of the extra heat that the oven provides?

Beware of Space Heaters

While you might think that it is a good idea to use a space heater to help heat your home in the winter you need to avoid doing this.  You will be at the risk of having a house fire if something should bump into the heater. If you must have a space heater, try to get one of the long, low to the ground ones. They heat just as well and are much less likely to be knocked over.

Thanks for Reading

Thanks so much for reading this DealDash article on saving money on heating costs. As you can see there are quite a few things that you can do in order to save money on your heating bill this winter. You will also find that you might have to do more than one thing in order to be really successful in making a difference in your heating bill. By taking action to save money on your heating bill you will see that you will have a much less stressful time this winter.

DealDash Finds Beauty in the Little Things

DealDash Reviewed

Are you feeling a little annoyed at the snow, wondering when Spring will be here? It’s going to be a little while longer. Enjoy the little things.

Winter is so dark and dreary, I for one yearn to see the fresh new blades of grass and flower blooms that come with Spring. It’s so nice to see all of the little birds and animals come out of hiding when the new vegetation starts to sprout. Unfortunately, that’s still a little while off, Spring officially starts on March 20th, so we still have a couple of months left to go. Let’s try to delight in the little things that come with winter.

Yummy Hot Drinks

Most people love hot coffee, and many others love tea, hot chocolate, and apple cider. These drinks are definitely more popular in the winter, who wants to drink hot apple cider in May? It’s very relaxing to hold a nice hot beverage and sit by the fireplace in your favorite chair.

Sweaters and Jackets

Maybe I’m a little strange, but I love sweaters, hoodies, and winter jackets! I love to get bundled up in my winter gear and be cozy and toasty warm even when the weather is cool outside. Also, I spend so much money on winter clothes, it seems like a waste to not use them enough!

Snuggling

Snuggling with a spouse, child, or pet is always a fun winter activity. My daughter loves to snuggle with me on the couch every day, she calls it our “appointment.” It’s also fun to get the whole family snuggled up on the couch together and watch a movie. These things just don’t happen in the summer! The winter promotes cuddles.

Holidays

The holidays are over now, but they are definitely a good part of winter. No matter what holiday you celebrate, I bet that there’s one in winter that you enjoy. The holidays usually mean getting together with extended family as well, so that’s another point in winter’s favor!

I hope that you found this article on winter helpful. Be sure to check back here on DealDash Reviewed as well as our sister blog DealDash Tips every day for fresh new articles. DealDash Winter Dates

Image result for winter date ideas

Winter is not typically a time that’s great for dating if you live somewhere that gets a lot of snow. Here are some indoor and outdoor date ideas from DealDash.

Burrrrrr! Who wants to leave the house when it’s cold and snowy outside? Well, if you’ve got a hot date, maybe it will motivate you to take off those fuzzy slippers and put on some boots instead. DealDash has some fun and relatively inexpensive winter date ideas.

Ice Skating

I’m personally not a fan of ice skating, but lots of people love it! If you look at the happy couple above you can see that they are having a lot of fun out on the ice even though they might not be the best skaters. There’s a learning curve to ice skating, maybe you could challenge your date to learn how to ice skate well by the end of the winter.

Movies

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are all times when great new movies usually come out. Get your fill of popcorn and romantic comedies at the movie theater this winter. Pro tip: Check the theaters near you, any theaters have discounted evening movies on Tuesdays or Wednesdays during the week.

Tubing

Tubing is the grown-up version of sledding down a hill. Normally you trudge up a giant hill with your tube in hand, similar to the water-tubing rides at the water park in the summer. It’s a lot of fun and doesn’t require a lot of skill like skiing or snowboarding does.

Make Cookies

Cookies aren’t just for Christmas! Get out that KitchenAid stand mixer and whip up some delicious cookies with your date. And even better, the second part of the date is eating the cookies! If you’re not much for cookies, how about pie instead? The first crops of strawberries and blueberries seem to be arriving at the supermarket right about now, get some and make a delicious pie.

Hockey Game

There’s no more appropriate sport for winter than hockey. Get out there and show some team spirit and go see a hockey game on your date. Do matching face paint for bonus couple’s points!

I hope that you found these winter date ideas from DealDash fun! For winter snow removal tools such as shovels, scrapers, and snow blowers check DealDash first. DealDash has everything you need. DealDash Makes Snow Ice Cream

DealDash Snow Ice Cream

I can think of 3 good things about snow – snow days, snowmen, and snow ice cream.

Have you ever had snow ice cream? As someone who grew up in North Carolina, I had never even heard of it until I went on a trip to Ohio. I saw more snow during my 4 days in Ohio than I had seen in my whole 17 years of life. This was when I was introduced to the “snow slushy,” which was really just snow with 7-UP poured on top. Living in Massachusetts, my tastes have become a little more refined, hence the snow ice cream.

What is It?

Truthfully, it’s really not that much more difficult to make than the snow slushy, and requires only 5 basic ingredients. However, as with most ice creams, you can get as creative as you like with different ingredients. Here is the recipe for the basic snow ice cream.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (Keep this in the fridge for about an hour before use)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 8 cups clean snow

I cannot stress enough that this needs to be clean snow. My suggestion to you is to capture some fresh snow as it’s falling with a large mixing bowl. You can put this bowl somewhere on your porch, deck, or front steps, and keep an eye on it as it’s filling up with snow.

Directions:

  1. Using a large bowl, pour the milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt together and whisk. Make sure the bowl is large enough and made of light plastic to minimize any heat transfer.
  2. Measure out 8 cups of clean snow and mix it immediately with the vanilla milk mixture. Do this very quickly, and preferably outside since you don’t want the snow to melt.
  3. Mix until you have your desired consistency of ice cream. If you don’t want to eat it immediately, put it in the freezer to chill.

Really, it’s that easy. There are many other ingredients that you can mix in with the basic recipe to make even more exotic and delicious. Here are a few ideas:

  • Peppermint extract
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Chocolate cocoa mixture
  • Strawberry syrup or real strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Peanut butter
  • Marshmallow fluff

DealDash Fun Winter Facts

DealDash winter facts

Love it or hate it, winter is an interesting season. Here are some fun facts about winter from DealDash.

Are you the sort of person that embraces the winter season? Do you love to get into your winter gear and go frolic in the snow? Or are you the sort of person who would rather huddle under the covers and wait for winter to end? No matter if winter is your most or least favorite season, here are some fun winter facts from DealDash.

Huge Snowflakes, Huge Snowmen

According to the Guinness World Records, on January 28, 1887, a snowflake 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick fell in Fort Keogh, Montana, making it the largest snowflake ever observed. Now that’s a huge snowflake, DealDash fans!

The largest recorded snowman ever built was in Bethel, Maine, in February 1999. The 113-foot, 7-inch snowman was larger than the previous record held by a snowman in Yamagata, Japan, at 96 feet and 7 inches.

Snowmagddon

President Barack Obama popularized the phrase “Snowmagddon” when two blizzards in 2010 struck during the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting. The blizzards broke snowfall records in the mid-Atlantic region, and after the second snowstorm, 68.1% of the U.S. was blanketed by snow. Who would have thought that President Obama had such a good sense of humor?

Warming Up the Car

Many people let their cars run for several minutes before actually driving it, supposedly to “warm up” the motor. This might help you feel warmer when you get inside, it doesn’t actually have any benefit to your car. Almost all engines are perfectly fine being driven right from starting it, no matter what the temperature might be. Personally, I love my remote starter on my car. I love to get into the car when it’s nice and toasty, and my seat all heated up.

Winter Sickness

A very common misconception is that being out in the cold will make you sick. This is a popular wives tale but is untrue. Getting a “cold” is from a virus or bacteria that makes you sick, not the weather. No matter how many times I tell my mother-in-law this, she doesn’t believe me!

DealDash Looks Forward to January

DealDash January

T.S. Eliot is known to have said that “April is the cruelest month.” Though some people would argue that it’s January. Let’s think of some things to look forward to in January.

“What’s good about January?” You might ask. Well, aside from celebrating a fine new year, there are many nice things about January. Many amazing people were born in January, including Paul Revere, Joan of Arc, Nicholas Cage, Edger Allen Poe, and my very own little baby, who turns 1 year old this January!

In addition to some amazing people being born in January, there is also the mild feeling of relief that all of the holiday preparations. Decorating and shopping are behind us again for another 10 months or so. Most people love the holidays, but also love them when they are over as well!

Now that it’s the beginning of the year again, we can all start with a fresh, clean slate ahead of us. Now is a great time of year to let go of all of the small grudges or bad feelings that you might have. You can try to mend fences with anyone that you are on “the outs” with, and hopefully forgive and forget.

Thinking positively…

Speaking of thinking positively here is a very cool idea that I read about a while back –  Someone suggested taking an empty jar and labeling it ‘Good Things’. Every time something good happens over the upcoming year, you stick a note into the jar as a reminder of happiness. Then, on New Year’s Eve, December 31st, you open the jar and look back on all the good things that have happened over the year. Isn’t that a cute idea? You could do this yourself, or have the whole family join in for more fun.

Finally, January is great for staying in, cuddling, watching movies, and drinking hot cocoa. In the summer I feel a little guilty when I keep the kids indoors since running and playing outside is so healthy for them. However, I don’t feel a single shred of guilt keeping them inside in the warmth when it’s so cold and yucky outside. For me, the best part of January is not having to go out in January weather!

Merry DealDash Christmas, Enjoy Winter

Image result for first day of winter

Merry Christmas from DealDash!! The first official day of winter was a few days ago, here are some winter-related thoughts.

Winter definitely isn’t my favorite season, however, I still think it’s a wonderful time and cozy season for creativity and the New Year’s Day always brings new beginnings. Whether you’re inside huddling with your pets next to the fireplace or out playing with your kids in the snow, there’s a whole winter season’s worth of inspiration all around us, and there’s always something exciting happening or something beautiful to look at if we really try. Here are some ideas to help you get through the winter season.

Invest in the correct equipment. This is very important if you live in a cold snowy climate. Be sure that you have a good sturdy shovel (or two!) and if you have a medium to large sized driveway you will need to get a snow-blower. When you have the right equipment it’s easy to get rid of the snow and go on with your day. DealDash has some great snow equipment that comes up for auction.

Don’t forget the smaller winter supplies as well. Along with the bigger equipment, you need to keep a stock of salt/sand, ice scrapers, and of course warm gloves, hats, and scarves around for when you need them. Be sure to check DealDash for these small supplies as well.

Stock up on non-perishables at the supermarket, and keep your fridge and freezer reasonably full of things that your family likes for meals. Snow is much nicer when seen from inside, wrapped in a blanket, sipping on hot chocolate; to get the most enjoyment out of a snowstorm stay inside! You’ll be glad that your pantry and fridge are stocked when a storm hits. You’ll be able to avoid that last minute rush to the supermarket, and be able to stay indoors.

Keep your electronics charged up. Put fresh batteries in your flashlights, keep candles and a lighter handy, and make sure your cell phones and tablets are all charged up. Power outages happen when ice and snow weigh down the utility wires and poles, and they aren’t always resolved quickly. Be fully prepared, and for extra preparedness get a couple external cell phone chargers in case you need a little extra power for your phone if the electricity happens to go out. Check DealDash for flashlights, chargers, and external cell phone chargers, they come up for auction and you can get a great deal.

DealDash Winter Skin Fixes – FACE

DealDash Winter Skin Fixes

Last week we talked about some winter skin fixes for your lips. Today we are going to expand to the rest of the face, neck, and decolletage.

As we talked about last week, the winter weather wrecks havoc on your otherwise healthy and vibrant skin. No one is immune to this unless you live somewhere that the weather is nice year-round – but then you have to worry more about sun damage, so we should all take the best care of our skin that we can, no matter where we live.

Speaking of sun damage, even though it’s cold and snowy outside the sun can still damage your skin if you go outside without any sunscreen on. However, in the winter most people are more covered up anyway, so you can probably get away with using an SPF 15, 20, or 30 that is built in to your regular daytime moisturizer. If you aren’t wearing a regular daytime moisturizer, it’s time to start.

Moisturizer on your face is key to keeping nice-looking skin year-round. You should preferably have a daytime moisturizer with SPF in it, and a thicker moisturizer for night time. Yes, men too! Men get sun damage just like women, and can also suffer from wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer. Everyone needs sunscreen in all seasons.

Beating the rough dry skin of winter can be difficult, but advances in sonic brushes have made things a lot easier. DealDash has a sonic brush kit that has everything you need to tame your winter skin. The kit includes everything that you need to get started on your way to smoother winter skin:

  • Handheld sonic unit
  • 4 batteries
  • Body polishing brush
  • Facial brush
  • Facial buffer
  • Pumice for feet, elbows, and extra dry patches of skin

These brush kits from DealDash come in a variety of colors including pink, purple, and white. I personally have won a few of these kits. They are awesome to use on yourself, but they also make wonderful presents for just about anyone on your list.

If you’d like to fix your dry winter skin, be sure to pick up the brush kit from DealDash. It’s great for your face, neck, decolletage, and if you switch out the brush heads you can use it anywhere on your body. Visit DealDash now to pick up a kit. DealDash’s Winter Skin Fixes – LIPS

DealDash Winter Skin Fixes

It’s Winter, so let’s face it – we’ve all got dry skin. Here are some Winter skin fixes for lips from DealDash to keep your lips feeling smooth til Spring.

Everyone get dry lips in the winter, even kids that normally have nice, smooth baby lips. The cold outside mixing with the dry air from heating inside just sucks all of the moisture right out of your skin. Luckily, there are plenty of small things that you can do to improve the look and texture of your winter lips. Here are some Winter skin fixes for lips from DealDash.

Your lips are sure to get dry, chapped, and cracked if you spend any time outdoors this winter. There are a few things that you can do to help soothe and even prevent the worst of the cracks from happening. The number one thing that you need to do for your lips in the winter is to keep some sort of balm on them anytime you go outside. It doesn’t matter if it’s a .99 Chapstick or the fanciest lip balm that they make, just make sure that your lips are covered when you’re outdoors in the cold weather.

Next, in keeping with the lips covered track, it would be a smart idea to put a dab of Vaseline on your lips at night before you go to sleep. Your skin does most of its repairs when you’re sleeping, so help it along with some ultra soothing Vaseline.

Finally, I would suggest exfoliating your lips every few days with an old toothbrush. Make sure that the toothbrush has soft or medium bristles, wet it slightly, and rub gently on your cracked, dry lips. Follow up with Vaseline for maximum effect.

Another thing to think about when trying to prevent dry and cracked winter skin is to get a humidifier for your bedroom. If you keep a humidifier running while you are sleeping at night it can keep your skin moist and help prevent chapping and cracking.

DealDash has an assortment of humidifiers to choose from. Go visit DealDash and browse the humidifiers. DealDash has great bargains every day. Just click this link to visit DealDash now. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

Fun Indoor Kid’s Activities from DealDash

kids-doing-crafts

Now that winter is upon us, most people have an innate desire to stay indoors. Kids tend to get bored with the same old activities, so here are some new ideas from DealDash to keep things fresh and fun.

Kids have so many more things to do indoors now than when I was a kid. When I was a kid, there were network TV cartoons on the weekend, Legos, and Barbies. Kids of today have practically unlimited games on their iPads, millions of YouTube videos to watch, and cartoons “on demand” through the cable provider. However, as soon as the weather gets nasty and they are forced to stay indoors, what do you hear? “I’m booooooooreddd.” Of course, these are the exact same children that were happy to watch countless hours of TV and iPad when it was nice outside, but I digress. Here are some fun indoor activities for your kids from DealDash.

  • Washi tape roads – Pick up a roll of washi tape (paper tape) at your local big box store (I have even seen it at the Dollar Store) and make tape roads on any floor surface. Washi tape is made out of paper and has a rather weak grip, so it’s very easy to remove from wood, tile, and carpet. It’s very similar to painter’s tape but in fun colors and patterns. After you have made your washi tape roads, drive your Hot Wheels cars around on them. This is a really fun activity if you have a large floor space.
  • Washi Tic-Tac-Toe – Staying on the washi tape theme, make tic-tac-toe grids on any floor surface. Make them really BIG, and use fun placeholders for your X’s and O’s such as each child’s favorite stuffed animals. You can also make hopscotch grids as well.
  • Indoor picnic – Find yourself a basket (any large basket or box will work) and fill it with lunch foods that your kids will enjoy for their indoor picnic. Try juice boxes, water bottles, packets of fruit snacks, string cheese, tubes of yogurt, and sandwiches. Don’t forget to pack plastic forks, paper plates, napkins, and most importantly – a picnic blanket! Have your picnic anywhere you like, except the kitchen. That just isn’t as fun!
  • Bake something together. What’s better than family bonding time, a learning experience, and a delicious treat, all with one activity? If sweets aren’t on your family’s menu, try making a pizza together.
  • Karaoke dance party – If you have a karaoke machine, great! However, if you haven’t won one on DealDash yet, you can find pretty much any song on YouTube with lyrics printed on the screen, have a Karaoke dance party with your kids in the living room. Choose some popular songs on the radio that they are familiar with (my daughter loves “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift) and add in some favorites from your childhood. It’s extremely funny to hear my daughter sing “Life Is A Highway” by Tom Cochrane. For extra fun, dress up in party clothes!

I hope that you have enjoyed this list of fun indoor activities for your kids. If you still need to find the kids some more indoor toys, be sure to check out DealDash. DealDash has indoor toys for kids of all ages and stages. Visit DealDash now. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash On: Winter Illnesses

Image result for winter illnesses

Staying well and not succumbing to a winter illness can be a tough proposition. There are germs everywhere. Here is a quick guide from DealDash to winter illnesses to try to avoid.

No one likes coughing, fevers, dry eyes, sniffles, and headaches, but sadly most people have some (or all) of these annoying symptoms every year due to getting sick in the winter time. People who are healthy at all other times of the year seems to end up sick in the winter, possibly due to being cooped up inside, sharing germs that the kids bring home from school, and many other reasons. Here is a short guide from DealDash of some of the illnesses that you should try to watch out for this winter.

  • Common cold
A cold is a viral infection that has a runny nose, and/or nasal congestion, a sore throat, a cough, and also possibly includes a  headache. You might also have a low-grade fever when you first contract a cold. Unfortunately, Colds can be caused by many different types of viruses, so it’s possible to get one after another, and there is no vaccine against a cold. Luckily, the winter months are usually when most people contract a cold. Most colds clear themselves up about in approximately 7-10 days. As I said, there’s no cure for the cold, just rest, hydration, and OTC medication to manage your symptoms.
  • Bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis is a common viral respiratory infection, especially among children, but anyone can contract Bronchiolitis. However, it is most often seen in younger children. Nasal congestion, cough, low-grade fevers, and wheezing are the most common symptoms seen with bronchiolitis. It can mimic a common cold in the beginning, and then can progress into the more serious bronchiolitis with wheezing, difficulty breathing, and dehydration. Just like it’s cousin, the cold, the symptoms with bronchiolitis tend to worsen over the first few days and then begin to improve. It’s very common to have a lingering cough after a bout of bronchiolitis.

Influenza
Influenza or “the Flu” begins with a high fever, cough, sore throat, headache, and also muscle aches and pains. The muscle aches and pains are the clue that you are dealing with the flu instead of a cold. The fever with the flu can last up to 5 days. The flu isn’t usually harmful to the average healthy adult, but it can be dangerous for babies, kids, the elderly, and people with already compromised immune systems. The best way to avoid the flu is to make sure that you and everyone in your family gets their annual flu vaccine.

  • Strep Throat
Strep throat can be contracted by anyone, but is most often seen in school-aged children and their parents. Strep throat usually includes a sore throat, headache, and can also include a stomach ache. Some people who contract strep will get high fevers or vomit. Luckily, strep throat does not cause cold symptoms or coughing.  It can usually be easily treated with antibiotics; sometimes there is a re-occurrence of strep throat shortly after. On a personal note, when I was in high school I repeatedly contracted strep throat, and they removed my tonsils!

Image result for bucket list winter

Winter is coming fast, and while it’s tempting to just stay inside and not emerge until spring, here is a winter bucket list for you to try.

Do you have a lifetime bucket list? I personally try to stay in the moment, and having a bucket list for each new season is a great way to try new things and have fun with my family in every type of weather. Here is a fun bucket list for you to try this winter – add or remove things as you see fit to personalize it for yourself and your family.

  • Play in the snow. This might not be applicable for all of you out there, but for those of you in colder climates, go out and play! Grab your child, grandchild, or spouse, and get out there in the sparkly cold weather!
  • Make an advent calendar. Advent calendars are a fun way to count down the time until Christmas. Make your own with little candy treats for each day leading up until Christmas.
  • Make cookies. Cookies aren’t just for Christmas, they are great for the whole winter season. Try sugar cookies or even gingerbread men.
  • Pick a child off of the “angel tree” at your mall, and buy (or win from DealDash!) gifts for a disadvantaged child in your hometown.
  • Make apple cider or egg nog. Or both, why choose?
  • Get a gingerbread house kit and make it with your kids or grandkids. If you don’t have kids or grandkids, maybe there is a neighbor child that you could invite over to share this activity with you.
  • Light the fireplace and drink hot chocolate by firelight.
  • Make Christmas ornaments. Decorating the tree is more fun when you have made some of the ornaments yourself. Try making picture ornaments of your child, grandchild, or pets. Don’t forget to put the year on them!
  • Visit a farm and take a hayride, eat cider donuts, and bring home a pie.

Doing Fall Chores with DealDash

Image result for fall chores

Everyone thinks to do the obvious fall chores such as leaf-raking and gutter-cleaning, but what about the lesser thought of chores…

Now that we are very firmly planted into fall, it’s time to do a few different chores inside and outside the house to prepare for winter. There are the obvious fall chores that we usually think of, but there are lots of other chores that might just slip your mind until it’s too late in the season to do them. Here is a quick list of some of the lesser thought of fall chores that you might want to incorporate into your house and yard work this coming weekend.

  • Insect spraying. Before the weather turns cold and the buggies try to make their way inside your home, give your house a good spraying around the perimeter. There are some excellent insecticides that come with their own sprayer and just need to be pumped manually. Spray the entire outside, and concentrate around the doorways and windows. You can get these great insecticides from any big box store near you.
  • Sweep (or use your leaf blower!) to clean out your basement and garage. The dirt from summer, and those pesky fall leaves just seem to make their way in no matter how careful you are. Get them out and have a nice fresh and clean slate for the snow, ice, and salt to be tracked in. It’s a never-ending chore, but at least you might be able to keep it clean for a little while until the season changes into winter.
  • Clean your windows, inside and out. Now is the time to clean off those grimy windows. Clean them inside and out, before it gets too cold to be able to open them up to clean the outsides. You can use windex, or even a 1/2 water, 1/2 white vinegar solution to get them sparkling clean.
  • Swap out your summer clothing for your winter clothing. Be sure to store your out-of-season clothing in plastic totes if you are going to be keeping them in the basement, garage, or attic. This will keep them safe from moisture and other unsavory elements.

I hope that you have found this article helpful to get you started on your fall chores. If you need any products that were mentioned in the article such as plastic totes, a leaf blower, or even a gift card to a big box store DealDash has them for you. DealDash has all of these items and more up for auction. Just click on this  and you can visit DealDash and see how much you can save. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Recipes: Autumnal Beef Stew

Image result for beef stew

As the weather is cooling slightly, it’s a wonderful time to start thinking about fall recipes. Beef stew is one of my favorites.

There is just something to me that says “Winter is coming” with a big hearty bowl of beef stew. It’s delicious, has healthy ingredients, and you can even make a huge batch of it, and freeze it for later use for a night that you don’t feel like cooking this upcoming winter. Pairing beef stew with a delicious home-baked (yes, buying frozen dough and baking it counts as home-baked!) bread makes the perfect meal for a long, chilly night with your family.

Autumnal Beef Stew

Ingredients:

  • 2 LBS stew beef cut into cubes or small chunks
  • 10 small red potatoes cut into quarters
  • 1 LB baby carrots
  • 1 large red onion, cut into small chunks
  • 1/2 a stick of butter
  • 1 TBS flour
  • 1 Cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tsp each of: salt, dried parsley flakes, & garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp each of: pepper, celery seed, & dried thyme

Directions:

  1. Place potatoes, carrots and onions in a 5+ quart crock pot/slow cooker
  2. brown your beef cubes in a pan with the butter
  3. After browning beef, add to slow cooker
  4. Stir flour into the beefy pan drippings until mixed, then cook and stir until browned
  5. Add the water, then bring to a boil and cook while stirring for approximately 2 minutes or until thickened
  6. Add in all of your dry ingredients to the pan drippings, mix, then pour over beef in the slow cooker
  7. Cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours
  8. Serve with crispy buttered bread
  9. Enjoy!

Beef stew is the quintessential dinner for a chilly winter’s day. It can fill you up with its hearty goodness, and make you feel warm and comfortable even in the midst of a winter snowstorm. It’s easy to make, and delicious to eat. Even picky children usually like this beef stew, even if they end up picking out the onions!

If you want to make this recipe you must have a slow cooker. If you don’t have a slow cooker, DealDash has auctions for slow cookers quite frequently. DealDash can offer you a great deal on a slow cooker, and you can have fun bidding, as well. Just click this link here and it will take you to DealDash. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Grows: Winter Plants

Image result for winter plants

There are some surprisingly beautiful plants that grow and even thrive in the winter time. Here are a few good choices that you should look into for your winter landscaping.

Here in New England It’s still very hot, but soon enough the temperatures will start dipping in the evenings, and it will be time to get out the jackets before you know it. As with the jackets, also comes the sad realization that my yard is going to look bare in a matter of months. After doing a little research, I’m pleased to be able to share a few plants that can decorate your garden and yard that live, and even thrive in the cold winter weather.

If you don’t know your “zone”, you should simply Google “USDA Planting Zone Map” along with your state, and it should show you a simple map so you can see what planting zone you are in. It’s important to know your planting zone, because if you plant for the incorrect zone your plants might not survive. Here are a few plants that are good in most planting zones that you can enjoy in the winter.

Image result for Hellebore

Hellebore – The Hellebore is meant for zones 6-9, and doesn’t even mind a little snow! They revive themselves quickly after a snow, and the flowers are most beautiful in the early springtime.

Image result for 'Jelena' witchhazel

‘Jelena’ witch hazel – The witch hazel is meant for zones 6-9. The witch hazel boasts mid- to late winter flowers which appear before the spring foliage emerges. They have a wonderful smell and are definitely a welcome sight halfway through winter.

Image result for flowering kale

Flowering Cabbage & Kale – Flowering cabbage & kale are meant for zones 2-11, so as you can see they are quite adaptable. I absolutely love flowering cabbage & kale, they are some of my favorite plants ever. Technically, you can even eat them! However, their leaves are a bit rubbery and they are really more for decoration only. They come in beautiful shades of cream, purple, green, and pink. Their color tends to get better as the weather gets worse. The only drawback to these beautiful plants are they are annuals. They are rather inexpensive, though, so it’s not cost prohibitive to re-plant them every fall.

I hope that after reading this article you have some great ideas for your winter garden. DealDash has some awesome gardening supplies and everything else that you need for your yard. Be sure to visit DealDash to see how much you can save. Good luck and happy bidding everyone.
