Having a dedicated area to work from home will allow you to focus on the work that you need to get done. It would be extremely helpful if this area has a door, but it isn’t a must.

Will You Still Need Daycare?

Will you still need childcare when you work from home? Now, this seems to negate the purpose of working from home, however, there are many people that work from home that have childcare for their kids. Typically this is for a small portion of the day so they can get their work done instead of full-time daycare. Some people can do without daycare, but this but it is definitely something to consider.

Clean up is simple, just start with the things that can definitely be thrown away or recycled such as that half-eaten bagel and those lunch take-out menus that you can easily look up online if you need them. Once you have thrown away the trash, then tidy up the rest by organizing them nicely. You will feel much better about your space when it’s clean.

Adding a Touch of Home

Now that you have gotten some nice plants and cleared away your trash and recyclables, it’s time to decorate. Bring in a few framed photos of your family, friends, or pet. They will make you feel more calm and happy through the stress of the day. You can also bring in your favorite coffee mug, and even a foot massager for under your desk (Shhhh! I won’t tell!). If you are a fan of the new flameless LED candles you could bring in one of those as well. They typically have remotes so you can change their color throughout the day to suit your mood.

Music to My Ears

If you aren’t required to be on the phone most of the day, then bring in your favorite music. You can load up your iPod with different playlists to complement your mood. Make a “busy day” playlist with background music, and a “slow day” playlist with lots of upbeat songs to get you through a slow day. If you have your own office then a Bluetooth speaker might be the thing for you, however, if you are out in the “cubicle farm”, then you’ll need to get headphones or ear buds. If your job requires you to answer the phone then try just sticking in 1 ear bud so you can hear when the phone rings.

I will admit, I am a HUGE fan of lists. I love to make all types of lists: to-do, grocery,  ideas, anything! Making lists can help you learn how to prioritize things. If you make a list of all of the things that you should get done today, then put them in order of importance. Once you get the important things done then you can work on the less-important things. Lists are important because they can help you plan things out to be more productive than you would be by just thinking of what you need to do.

Put Down the Phone

One of the biggest offenders in stealing your productivity is your phone. All of the text alerts, notifications from apps, FaceBook alerts, and everything else makes you pick up your phone far too often when you are trying to get things done. If you have made a list like I suggested previously, and are checking things off as you go, then you can reward yourself with phone time after you have completed the most important items. Until you have your items completed, then your phone needs to stay out of sight. Trust me, it’s hard at first, but you’ll get used to it, and complete your tasks even faster.

Keep It Simple

You don’t need all kinds of fancy cleaning products to keep your home office or small business office clean! You just need one all-purpose cleaner and either paper towels or some cleaning rags. If you’re wondering which all-purpose cleaner to use, I suggest the cheapest and easiest of them all – white vinegar! You can use white vinegar and water in a 50/50 solution that will clean, disinfect, de-stink, and even clean glass to a nice, bright shine with little effort on your part! Just get an empty spray bottle (they have them in the travel section in the big box stores), and fill it with a 50/50 vinegar and water solution. Simple, easy, cheap, and completely kid and pet safe!

Be Gentle With Yourself

If you’re a perfectionist, try to be gentle with yourself. If you have a small office or home office and no professional cleaners, then it isn’t going to be perfect. Just do the best you can, follow these tips, and stick with it. The longer you keep up the cleaning plan, the cleaner it will become over time. You can do it!

Ditch the Clutter

Do you have a lot of clutter in your workspace? Try spending the last 10 minutes of your workday cleaning and organizing your workspace. This will be beneficial to you in a few ways. First, it will help you to start each day with a clean slate to work with. Next, it will let you focus on your work during the day instead of getting distracted. Finally, it will help you stay clean and organized if you do this daily.

Put Yourself in “Smartphone Jail”

When you arrive at work in the morning, turn your phone on silent, and place it either face down on your desk, in a drawer, or in a briefcase, purse, or in a pocket. Give yourself designated 5-minute phone breaks throughout the day to check your texts, Facebook, and other messages.

Use a timer app to ensure that you don’t get distracted and go over the 5-minute break time limit. Unless someone is in dire need of help, they can wait until your next 5-minute phone break to respond to them. Once you have freed yourself from the constant dings and notifications you will have much better concentration during your workday.

Do the Hardest Tasks First

If your job requires you to do tasks that have different levels of concentration, do the most difficult ones first. You will likely have the most mental energy at the beginning of your work day, so get the hard stuff done first. Once you have gotten your most dreaded tasks out of the way, then you can cruise on auto-pilot for a while and do your tasks that don’t require quite as much concentration.

If you’re working in an environment where you don’t have total control over when you do certain tasks, then it’s going to be more difficult for you. Be sure to take those 5-minute phone, coffee, or relaxation breaks that we talked about above. It will give your brain a chance to recharge and prepare for the next task ahead.

DealDash Beats the Afternoon Slump

We are all familiar with the “afternoon slump,” that time around 2 or 3 PM when all we want to do is take a nap. DealDash has some ideas to beat the afternoon slump and keep you working!

Most of us tend to suffer an all out sleepiness assault in the mid-to-late-afternoon, it’s not all in your head. Most people definitely experience at least a small dip in their energy, concentration, and alertness almost every afternoon, especially on work days. Why is this? Well, there are many reasons, but two of the most common ones are:

  1. You’ve been sitting at your desk for hours upon hours.
  2. You’re dehydrated.

There are easy solutions to those two problems. For the first problem, simply getting up and moving around for at least 5 minutes every hour can greatly reduce your loginess. You can accomplish this without attracting the ire of your bosses by getting up to make copies, retrieve your printouts from the laser printer, or going to use the restroom.

For the second problem, the solution is even easier! Just bring a re-usable water bottle into work and keep it filled and on your desk at all times. Give it a quick rinse at the end of the day, set it upside down on a paper towel on your desk to dry overnight, and it will be as good as new in the morning and ready to fill with water all over again. Personally, I prefer to keep my water bottle filled with ice, and just drink the ice water as it melts, but I realize not everyone has the luxury of being near an ice maker at all times.

There are other reasons for the afternoon slump, some of the other causes can include eating too many carbs at lunch, staying up late the night before, drinking alcohol the night before, getting inadequate sleep due to a bad mattress, and other various reasons. If you try to correct these problems and are still experiencing an afternoon slump every day, then you might want to visit your doctor, you might be missing some vital nutrients in your diet that they can help you correct.

Distraction is defined as “a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else”. Let’s look at 5 common distractions.

As an adult living with ADHD I am no stranger to distractions. One of the things that I have found very helpful to help me focus on the task at hand is knowing what are some common distractions that I am up against, so I can recognize them and deal with the preventively instead of just reacting to them. Here are 5 common distractions that you should watch out for, lest they prevent you from finishing your tasks.

1 – Social media. Social media is the number one distraction, and this includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more. Social media is a great thing, I wholeheartedly endorse using social media, but not when you need to be doing other things that are more important or time-sensitive. If you feel that you absolutely must check your social media while you are working or attempting to finish a project, then set a timer. Pick a reasonable amount of time such as 20 minutes – and set your timer for 15 minutes. Once the timer goes off you need to finish your last social media post and then sign out.

2 – Texting. I am the first to admit, I text with my friends and family all day when I should really be devoting my time to other things. As with the social media mentioned above, there’s definitely time in your day to text your friends and family, you just have to pre-determine when you will read and send texts. I suggest that you pick certain times in your day to read and send texts, such as 9AM, 12PM, 3PM, etc…I know that an unread text message can be a little stressful, so if you would like to use this strategy to keep yourself focused, then I suggest that you turn off your text alerts. If it’s something that can’t wait then they will just have to call you.

3 – People. If you work in an office with other people, especially friendly people, then sometimes they are going to distract you. Once in a while isn’t a problem, but if it gets to be an everyday occurrence then I suggest that you wear headphones while you are working. You don’t even have to have any music playing, just the sight of you wearing headphones will ward off any idle chatter.

4 – TV. If you’re trying to accomplish a task at home, don’t turn on the TV to keep you company. The light, sound, and movement of the TV will distract you and entice you to watch “just one show”. If you prefer to have noise while you are working or cleaning, turn on the radio.

5 – Daydreaming. I am very guilty of this distraction, and unfortunately it’s the most difficult one to stop. I have no solution to this distraction, other than trying to be more aware of your task and trying to keep focused.

Doing Fall Chores with DealDash

Everyone thinks to do the obvious fall chores such as leaf-raking and gutter-cleaning, but what about the lesser thought of chores…

Now that we are very firmly planted into fall, it’s time to do a few different chores inside and outside the house to prepare for winter. There are the obvious fall chores that we usually think of, but there are lots of other chores that might just slip your mind until it’s too late in the season to do them. Here is a quick list of some of the lesser thought of fall chores that you might want to incorporate into your house and yard work this coming weekend.

  • Insect spraying. Before the weather turns cold and the buggies try to make their way inside your home, give your house a good spraying around the perimeter. There are some excellent insecticides that come with their own sprayer and just need to be pumped manually. Spray the entire outside, and concentrate around the doorways and windows. You can get these great insecticides from any big box store near you.
  • Sweep (or use your leaf blower!) to clean out your basement and garage. The dirt from summer, and those pesky fall leaves just seem to make their way in no matter how careful you are. Get them out and have a nice fresh and clean slate for the snow, ice, and salt to be tracked in. It’s a never-ending chore, but at least you might be able to keep it clean for a little while until the season changes into winter.
  • Clean your windows, inside and out. Now is the time to clean off those grimy windows. Clean them inside and out, before it gets too cold to be able to open them up to clean the outsides. You can use windex, or even a 1/2 water, 1/2 white vinegar solution to get them sparkling clean.
  • Swap out your summer clothing for your winter clothing. Be sure to store your out-of-season clothing in plastic totes if you are going to be keeping them in the basement, garage, or attic. This will keep them safe from moisture and other unsavory elements.

Fall is upon us, and in most parts of the US that means it’s time for yard work!

No matter if your yard is big or small, if you have even one tree that means you will have some yard work to do this season. Of course, most people who have a yard have more than one there, and therefore more yard work to accomplish. Even if you don’t have any trees, don’t worry, there’s yard work for you to do as well! Here are a few of the common tasks that you should be doing in the fall to prepare for the winter ahead.

  • Raking – of course! When most people think of fall they immediately think of raking the fallen leaves. This is usually a fairly easy task that can even be fun if the whole family gets involved. Go ahead, just in that leaf pile, it will melt away the stresses of the day and add an added bonus will amuse your young children and embarrass your older ones. Win-win!
  • Plant your flower bulbs now for the spring. Yes, now is the optimal time to plant tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. If you plant the bulbs now you can avoid having to do this in the spring. Just be sure that you are planting the freshest bulbs – give them a squeeze to ensure firmness before planting. You can also plant cooler weather grasses, as well.  The most common ones are Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and fine fescue. These are often packaged up and sold as a blend, which is very convenient if you were planning on planting a mixture anyway.
  • Cover your assets. Be sure to detach your gas tank from your grill and cover it up with a quality grill cover. Also, cover up your patio furniture if possible, and move anything else into your garage or basement such as tiki torches, lanterns, and any kid’s toys you have scattered about.
  • Clean those gutters. If you live in a house with gutters be sure that you have scooped and cleaned them out after most of the leaves have fallen. Clogged gutters can damage your home and cause basement flooding when snow melts, so it’s important to clean your gutters before winter arrives. Just get up on a ladder and scoops those yucky leaves out. After you have scooped, give the gutters a quick rinse with the garden hose.

Do you wish that you had a perfect office? Looking at pictures of offices online it seems that everyone works in an ideal space. Here are some ideas for making your personal office space more picture perfect.

If you have an office that you are currently in now – look around. What are some things that you love about your office, and what areas could use improvement? Sometimes all it takes to change something “OK” into something great is just a few small modifications.

Plants, plants, plants. If you don’t have any plant life in your office space, I advise you to stop working right now, go to the store, and pick up a plant or two. I personally prefer Bonsai Trees, Air Plants, and Succulents. If you aren’t great with keeping plants alive I suggest the Air Plant. You just need to mist it occasionally and it will live practically forever.

Sit comfortably. If your office chair is not the most comfortable chair that you’ve ever sat in, I suggest that you put “office chair” on your shopping list. You may need to go to many, many store before you find the perfect office chair. However, when you find one that is comfortable, fits your style, and is compatible with your budget – buy it! Sitting for hours can be hard on your body (and your soul) if you are uncomfortable. Make comfort a top priority.

Decorate. Are your walls bare? Or even worse, do you have horrible art up that you don’t even like? Think for a few days or even weeks what your personal style encompasses. What sort of feeling are you trying to project at work? Are you going for serenity (such as massage) or aggression (high pressure sales), or something in between? Figure out what sort of tone that you are going for…And go for it!

DealDash Helps: Reach for Goals

I am personally working on meeting my personal goals more consistently, and I learned something recently that I would like to share with all of you.

Maybe I am just behind the curve, but I learned about something recently that has quite literally changed my life, and I thought that I would share it with you. S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, Time-bound. Let’s go through the acronym and see what each part means.

S – Specific. You need to think about what your specific goal entails, and how you can go about accomplishing it. No matter if your goal is a personal one such as losing 20 pounds or a professional goal such as getting your sales up by 10%, be specific.

M – Measurable. You goal needs to be measurable, as in, not just “lose weight” or “increase sales.” How will you even realize if you are making progress towards your goal unless you have a specific and measurable goal?

A – Action-oriented. Even if you have thought of a well-defined goal it could prove difficult to achieve without a clear plan of action for you to follow. When you are thinking about your goal and making your plan, be sure that you include action-oriented steps as part of your goal achievement plan. That way you’ll know what you’re trying to accomplish and, more importantly, how you’ll get there.

R – Realistic. There are few things more discouraging than not being able to meet a goal. However, if you are setting the bar too high for yourself then you are setting yourself up for fail. For example, saying that your goal is to lose 50 pounds in 1 month isn’t realistic. If you set your goal to something more realistic such as 2 pounds per week you have a much greater chance of success.

T – Time-bound. Be sure that there is a firm time-limit to accomplish your goal. If you’re having trouble deciding how long to give yourself to accomplish your goal pick an end date. After you have set a firm deadline for yourself, work your way backwards to determine when you need to begin working towards your goal, and when milestones along the way must be met.

DealDash Stays on Task

Time management is an important skill to have, especially if you have work and family obligations. Let DealDash give you tips on how to stay on task and get things done.

What are some of the reasons that you can’t seem to fit everything in your day? I have thought about what affects me, and the list that I have come up with is:

  • Checking my email on my smartphone 20 times per day
  • Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram
  • People interrupting me when I am trying to work
  • Not being organized enough
  • General distractions

Your list of time management roadblocks might be similar to mine or completely different. The way to go about solving these problems is fairly similar though. Read on, and picture yourself taking these positive steps to staying on task.

Looking at my list of time suckers I can knock the first two off by being less glued to my phone. Do you have an email and social media problem like I do? Then set a reasonable amount of “reward” minutes that you can check your email and social media per hour, or after you are done completing a project. If you find yourself “cheating” and looking at your email and social media when you aren’t supposed to then you might have to take action and purposefully leave your phone in the car or in another room.

The next item I have on my list is people interrupting me when I am trying to work. Those people who I am referring to are my kids – but in your situation it could be your chatty co-worker, your spouse, or a friend who likes to talk to you while you are working. My answer to this particular problem is headphones. My kids have learned that when they see my big Beats headphones on while I am typing on my Chromebook that conversations with Mommy are off-limits. If a 4 & 8-year-old can learn this your co-workers and spouse can, too!

Next on the list is the fact that I am sometimes a bit disorganized. The papers and clutter are easy to organize with a few organizational items, but my main problem is disorganized thoughts. For this problem I actually text and email myself regularly. Trust me, it helps.

Finishing up the list is general distractions. Personally, this is the most difficult time management problem for me. Since I am lucky enough to work at home there are 10 different distractions going on all at once, from the delivery person ringing the doorbell, my phone ringing with telemarketers, dishes piling up in the sink, the list goes on and on. My way to combat this is making a “To Do” list every day with the most important things at the top. I might not get through the entire list every day, but it’s a step in the right direction.
