DealDash Guide to a Beach Day With Kids

DealDash

A trip to the beach with kids is a fun and tiring experience. Here is a guide from DealDash to having the best time at the beach with little ones.

Do you remember the days when you went to the beach either alone, with friends, or with a partner? You had not a care in the world but what bathing suit to wear? You could do whatever you wanted like read a book, tan in the sun and maybe, possibly, even take a nap!

However, now, with kids, that fun in the sun is a distant memory, and your day at the beach has become just watching your kids in a different location. However, simply follow this guide from DealDash and you will be enjoying the beach with your kids in no time!

Pack Your Beach Bag in Advance

If you’re trying to get an early start to your fun beach day you’ll need to get your packing done the night before. Once your kids are in bed, it’s time to pack your beach bag. Take just a few minutes to prep and it will save you time in the morning when time is precious. If you prefer, you can make a list and then gather the items. This way you will be certain not to forget anything.

Apply Sunscreen at Home (or Hotel)

Take just a few minutes before you hop in the car to go to the beach to apply everyone’s sunscreen. Did you know that sunscreen doesn’t actually start working immediately? It takes about 15 minutes to start working, so it’s a good idea to apply it before you leave for the beach. Also, it’s much easier and less stressful to put everyone’s sunscreen on at home rather than on the beach when everyone is eager to get into the water and start playing.

Sunscreen also needs to be re-applied throughout the day. Once the initial application is on, you have about 60–80 minutes until it’s time to touch‐up. Read the bottle of sunscreen to know exactly when it’s time to re-apply. Be sure to out a small‐sized tube of SPF 50+ sunscreen in a pocket of your beach bag. You can set an alarm on your phone to remind you when it’s time to apply the next coat.

Don’t Forget the Snacks (and Water)!

Kids of all ages like snacks. A day at the beach burns a lot of calories, so it’s important to be able to refuel yourself and your family. Try chips, popcorn, pretzels, cookies, and fruit like watermelon and grapes. Also, don’t forget the bottled water! I suggest bringing more water than you think you will need. It can’t hurt, and it is important to stay hydrated.

DealDash Packing Tips for a Beach Trip

DealDash

Packing for a beach trip is easy, but you don’t want to forget any of the key components. Here are some tips from DealDash to pack for the beach.

When the weather is warmer, you can find everyone at the beach. The beach is the perfect place to spend time during the summer.  You can get a tan, build a sand castle, or go for a swim. Regardless of the reasons why you want to go to the beach, you need to be prepared.  There are some things that you must bring to the beach in order to enjoy your trip, from DealDash.

Swimsuits

Swimsuits are the number one thing that you need for a beach trip, whether you are going for a swim or not.   You should travel with at least two swimsuits one to wear and one that is dry. Swimsuits will keep you nice and cool when you are at the beach. If you are male short or swim trunks will do just fine.

Beach Towel

Everyone needs a beach towel for the beach. A beach towel will help you dry yourself off, and you can lay it in the sand so that you will have somewhere to sit. When you are looking for a beach towel, it is best to go to places like Wal-Mart or Target and get a set of beach towels.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a very important item that you must have when you go to the beach. You need a sunscreen that will protect your skin from the heat. Make sure that the sunscreen has SPF 30 or higher. When you order sunscreen online, you will save a lot of money compared to buying sunscreen in the store. Don’t forget to re-apply your sunscreen every few hours.

5 End of Summer Ideas from DealDash

There is just a little bit of summer left before the kids go back to school, here are 5 things that you should do before summer is over.

It’s been a great summer, but all great things must come to an end…At least until next summer, anyway! Here are 5 things that you should definitely do before summer has officially come to an end.

  1. Go to the beach!! Have you been to the beach yet this year? If you haven’t, it’s definitely time to go. I personally haven’t been this summer, I stayed at home with my baby when the rest of the family went, so this is something that I am going to have to correct over the next few weekends. It’s getting slightly less hot here in New England, so I think it’s about time that the baby gets his first trip to the beach!
  2. Have a picnic. Picnics are always a great time. I personally like to go to a place called Salem Willows, they have a little boardwalk area, a lot of picnicking space, benches, trees, and even a view of the water. It’s a wonderful place to bring a picnic lunch, walk around, and then to go the boardwalk and get ice cream.
  3. Shop for summer clothing for next year. They are starting to put the fall and winter clothing out in the stores now, so it’s a great time to shop the clearance racks for summer clothing that you and your family can wear next year. I was just at Target tonight, and I was able to get many, many t-shirts, shorts, sandals, and dresses for my kids for insane deals, from $1-4 dollars! It was amazing. Now is the time to do your shopping, though, if you wait too much longer all of the best deals will be gone.
  4. Have your friends over for a BBQ. A BBQ is a fun and relatively inexpensive way to have a party with your friends. All you need is some frozen hamburger patties, hot dogs, buns, chips, and some beer & soda and you are all set! You can minimize the mess by using paper plates, plastic utensils, and solo cups. It’s not the most eco-friendly way to party, but all of those items are recyclable, anyway.
  5.  Have a backyard camp out with your kids.  I am personally not one to “rough it” in the outdoors too much, but camping in your backyard is a great compromise with your kids if they want to go camping. You can pitch your tent on your deck or in your backyard, get out the flashlights and tell spooky stories, enjoy the sights and sounds of the night, look at the stars…And still be able to go inside and use the bathroom, win-win!

I hope that this list has you thinking of some ways to stretch out the fun just a little bit more this summer. Now that you have a few ideas, you might need to buy some supplies. DealDash has Target gift cards, BBQ grills, and camping supplies. It’s always fun to play and win on DealDash, just click this link right here and you can get started. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Teaches: Building a Sandcastle

Summer is in full swing here with temperatures in the mid-80s. I think it’s time to build a sandcastle.

Building a sandcastle is one of the most fun things about going to the beach, especially if you live somewhere that the water never truly warms up. I grew up in North Carolina very close to the beach, so I have spent my entire life making sandcastles. The weather in southern coastal North Carolina is very mild, and my family would go to the beach regularly from April until November. My kids don’t have it as lucky, Massachusetts may be coastal, but the beach season is significantly shorter.

Since I have been trying to teach the kids how to build a proper sandcastle I thought that I would write-up a quick instructional article. So if you want your sandcastle to go from looking like this:

to looking like this:

read on…

Most people are ill-prepared when they attempt their sandcastle, bringing maybe a bucket and a trowel. You don’t need many supplies, but you do need a few more than that. You need the aforementioned bucket and trowel, but you should also have something to tap the air out of the sand such as a bigger shovel or a largish flat rock, another bucket with the bottom cut off so it’s more of a large plastic tube than a bucket, a spoon, a plastic cup (like a red solo cup), and a paint stirrer.

The first thing that you will want to do is a little planning. Map out on the sand where your castle is going to be by drawing lines on the sand with your paint stirrer. Don’t bite off more than you can chew by making it too huge. Start on the smaller side until you get a little more confident in your building skills.

After you have mapped out the footprint of your castle then begin heaping sand into the outline of your castle from outside of the lines. Then with the back of your larger shovel pack the sides of the sand mound to form your castle walls. Make them higher than the center of the mound, creating a bowl shape to hold water. Keep packing until you get the height you want.

After you are done packing the sand use your bucket to fill up the bowl shape with water. Place a large bucket with bottom cut off on the mound. Fill three-quarters up with sand. Pour in water, climb in, and stomp. Tap sides with your shovel or flat rock to remove air. Repeat until bucket is full, then lift it off.

You can now use your paint stirrer to carve out walls, ledges, and doorways. You can use your plastic cup to add additional turrets to your castle, and use the spoon to dig out windows.

You’re done! If you would like to add any additional details such as shell decorations or cutting in brick designs with the paint stirrer now is the time. When you’re done be sure to take a picture of your sandcastle because like time, sandcastles are fleeting.

DealDash Travels: Wilmington, NC

Wilmington, North Carolina! “Why would I want to go there?” you might ask. Well, let me tell you all of the great things about my hometown.

The main reason that a lot of people like to travel to Wilmington is the beaches. There are three main beaches – Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach, and there is also the beautiful Cape Fear River. I grew up going to Wrightsville Beach. I would say that Wrightsville is the most popular beach around town, Wrightsville Beach is North Carolina’s most accessible beach and known for its clear blue waters and spacious, clean sands. The water sports are amazing here, from Kayaking or paddle boarding, and even surfing. You can also fish, either from the pier, a boat, or even right from the sand.

Wilmington isn’t just about the beach, though. Actually my favorite part about Wilmington is its historic downtown area. The streets are cobblestone, there is some amazing architecture to check out, there are horse drawn carriage rides, trolley tours, ghost walks, paddle boat rides, and even a boardwalk that runs alongside the river. There are also lots of activities that go on downtown, especially in the summer, such as outdoor concerts, the Azalea Fest, fireworks, farmer’s markets, and more. Downtown Wilmington is also where my favorite coffee chain was started, Port City Java. There is nothing better than a summer evening walk along the river, and then a delicious mocha shake from Port City Java.

If you’re a golfer Wilmington has some courses you could enjoy, or you might want to take a side trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. Myrtle Beach is a little over an hour’s drive from Wilmington, and has over 100 courses for you to try. Myrtle Beach also has some great family activities if your family is not interested in golfing with you.

Early or late summer in North Carolina are the perfect times to go, the weather should be in the 80s, perfect for going to the beach. If you’re a brave soul like I was when I was a teenager, you can swim from approximately May through October. Wilmington is an awesome vacation destination, give it a try!

If you’re going to be travelling by plane don’t forget your TSA compatible luggage locks, DealDash has those, too! You can check out DealDash’s luggage and lock choices at this link right here.
